Assessing Domestic Demand for Organic and ‘Locally Grown' Produce on An ‘Organic Island': Dominica's Dilemma AgEcon
Boys, Kathryn A.; Willis, David B.; George, Seraphine; Hammig, Michael D..
The economy of Dominica faces a unique set of challenges. As with many other Caribbean nations, Dominica has historically been dependent upon agriculture. Over the past several hundred years, the island's economy has been largely supported through the concentrated mono-cropping of a variety of export-oriented crops including coffee, limes, vanilla, and bananas (FAVACA, 2008). Today, approximately 45% of Dominica's labor force is employed in the agricultural sector (FAVACA, 2008). While neighboring countries have economically benefited from tourism, due to its lack of white sand beaches, Dominica is not a typical tourist destination. Taking advantage of its landscape, rainforests, and diversity of natural wildlife, in an effort to diversify its economy...

Beginning Farmers and Ranchers AgEcon
Ahearn, Mary Clare; Newton, Doris J..
USDA defines beginning farmers and ranchers as those who have operated a farm or ranch for 10 years or less either as a sole operator or with others who have operated a farm or ranch for 10 years or less. Beginning farmers tend to be younger than established farmers and to operate smaller farms or ranches, some of which may provide no annual production. Beginning farmers often face obstacles getting started, including high startup costs and limited availability of land. USDA—through the Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service—provides loans and conservation assistance to beginning farmers and ranchers. This report draws on data from annual surveys and the Census of Agriculture to provide policymakers with a better understanding...

Chaparro-Acuña,Sandra Patricia; Vargas-Moreno,Paola Andrea; Silva-Gómez,Leonardo Andrés; Cárdenas,Oswaldo Eliécer.
Abstract: Bioaccumulation of heavy metals such as cadmium has been a major concern in scientific communities and international food organizations, given the great toxicological risk to the consumer, and in many places there is no detailed record of its actual content. In this way, the need arises to carry out a study and registration of the concentration of this metal in products such as table chocolate, of great consumption at regional and national level. Likewise, we seek to have effective quantification tools and a reliable and affordable method to achieve the aim of this research. In this research, Cadmium content in powdered and granulated table chocolate was determined, elaborated and commercialized in the municipality of Chiquinquira,...

Changing Factor Income Shares in Agri-Food Industries AgEcon
Konduru, Srinivasa; Bjornson, Bruce.
A concern in the political economy is how national income is shared between labor and capital. This study evaluates long-term changes in factor income shares in three agri-food industries, their attribution to the level of factor usage or to factor compensation rates, and relation to changes in capital intensity and factor productivity. We find long-term stability in the profit and labor shares of farm income, decline, in the profit share of agricultural serviced industry income, and increase in the profit share of food manufacturing income due to fewer productivity improvements being passed on to wage increases.

CHINA'S FOOD AND AGRICULTURE: ISSUES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AgEcon
China's impact on world agricultural markets in coming decades will depend on many factors. Growing income and transition to modern urban lifestyles will increase demand for all foods, but demand will shift toward meat and high-value products. WTO accession may increase openness of China's agricultural trade and allow more imports. An understanding of geographic variations of consumption, production, trade, and policy is critical to understanding the vast China market. Development of transportation infrastructure and market channels will make it easier for food products to reach consumers. China's approach to biotechnology and its reform of institutions for allocating land, labor, and water inputs have important implications for agricultural productive...

Climate Change and International Markets for Australian Food Exports AgEcon
Creese, Jonathan; Marks, Nicki.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to alert food producers to emerging market demands associated with climate change. Design/methodology/approach – The study draws on literature review and applied market research. Findings – Many food retailers are applying pressure to their value chains to measure and manage carbon emissions. Although consumers play a role, consumers are not the main driver compelling retailers to respond to climate change. Research limitations/implications – This study only interviewed retailers in the United Kingdom and Japan as these are markets that are of particular interest for Australian food exporters. Originality/value – Consumers and retailers in export markets are responding to climate change. The research suggests that...

Clustering fastigiata peanut accessions for selection of early mature types suitable for the food market. Repositório Alice
RAMOS, J. P. C.; LUZ, L. N. da; CAVALCANTI, J. J. V.; LIMA, L. M. de; FREIRE, R. M. M.; MELO FILHO, P. de A.; SANTOS, R. C. dos.
Germplasm collections are the main raw material for breeding programs. Peanut is an important oilseed that serves to oil and food markets. The identification of early-mature genotypes and earliness adds benefits to crop production as it minimizes the costs of management and the losses of pod production due to occurrence of dry periods. In this paper, we estimate the genetic divergence in 77 peanut accessions (subsp. fastigiata), using three clustering methods, in order to identify early-mature genotypes and earliness for food market. The accessions were grown in field and phenotyped for 19 qualitative and quantitative traits. The Tocher methodology was employed for discriminating Valencia accessions. Both UPGMA and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) were...

Commercialization of Food Consumption in Rural China AgEcon
Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Tang, Ping; Bai, Xianhong; Xu, Huijun.
Rural households in China have traditionally consumed food mostly grown on their own farms. While they continue to rely on self-produced grains, vegetables, meats, and eggs for a large portion of their diet, rural households are now purchasing more of their food as they enter the mainstream of the Chinese economy. Cash purchases of food by rural Chinese households increased 7.4 percent per year from 1994 to 2003. Consumption has shifted from self-produced to purchased food at a rate faster than can be explained by income growth or changes in other household characteristics. The move away from self-produced food is associated with lower consumption of staple grains, the most important self produced food in rural Chinese diets. Food consumed away from home...

Comparing Consumer Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Food in Europe AgEcon
Springer, A.; Mattas, Konstadinos; Papastefanou, G.; Tsioumanis, Asterios.
As biotechnology evolves new methods of genetic engineering are now being applied to the production and processing of foods. This paper is trying to explore the attitudes of the European consumers towards genetic modification of food. Using survey data of the EU member countries the proposed research paper is planned to have a threefold output: 1) providing a comparative ranking of the EU member countries in relation to the prevalence of rejection of genetically modified food, 2) uncovering intra-european differences in genetic food engineering rejection as being based on socio-demographic and informational resp. knowledge based differentials between EU countries and 3) specifying the importance of socio-economic and informational determinants of a...

Comparing growth in surface and cave morphs of the species Astyanax mexicanus: insights from scales ArchiMer
Simon, Victor; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig; Legendre, Laurent; Ornelas-garcia, Patricia; Espinasa, Luis; Retaux, Sylvie.
Background Life in the darkness of caves is accompanied, throughout phyla, by striking phenotypic changes including the loss or severe reduction in eyes and pigmentation. On the other hand, cave animals have undergone constructive changes, thought to be adaptive, to survive in this extreme environment. The present study addresses the question of the evolution of growth in caves, taking advantage of the comparison between the river-dwelling and the cave-dwelling morphs of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus. Results A sclerochronology approach was undertaken to document the growth of the species in these two very distinct habitats. Scales from 158 wild Astyanax mexicanus specimens were analyzed from three caves (Pachón, Tinaja and Subterráneo) and two...

Comparison on animal production in organic and conventional systems MV&Z
Rossi, Gabriel Augusto Marques; Lemos, Paulo de Paula Lopes.
The market for organic products is increasing globally, seeking to fulfill the needs and expectations of consumers who believe it’s a healthier food. There are many controversies found in studies that assess primarily the physical-chemical, microbiological and the presence of this type of food of animal origin. This review aimed to evaluate the main differences between animal foods such as meat, milk, honey, eggs and fish produced in organic systems compared to those produced in conventional systems. The main differences are related to the physical-chemical food and no relevant differences were found between the possible presence of chemical or biological hazards in food of animal origin.

Comportamento alimentar e dieta de serpentes, gêneros Boiruna e Clelia (Serpentes, Colubridae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Pinto,Carla da Costa; Lema,Thales de.
Boiruna maculata Boulenger, 1896 and Clelia rustica (Cope, 1878) were observed in captivity feeding snakes and rodents, respectively. Both species have shown a similar procedure in relation to the prey. Major behavior differences among the two species were: rodents killed before being swallowed, and snakes were mostly swallowed alive; both species are able to find the rodents head faster than the snake one; the coils formed during constriction were also used to hold the prey, specially the last coil, while swallowing rodents. Informations on stomach contents was gathered by dissection of preserved specimens of Clelia clelia (Daudin, 1803) and C. plumbea (Wied, 1820) were also included in the dietary study. The majority of preys consisted on snakes and...
