Considering Macroeconomic Indicators in the Food versus Fuel Issues AgEcon
Qiu, Cheng; Colson, Gregory; Wetzstein, Michael E..
In this study, a Structural Vector Autoregression model (SVAR) is employed to decompose how supply/demand structural shocks affect food and fuel prices within fuel and corn markets. Results indicate that the relative importance of each structural shock in explaining the variation of corn prices is different. Our findings support the hypothesis that corn prices increase as a response to those positive demand shocks in the short run, while in the long run, global competitive agricultural commodities markets as well as positive supply shocks respond to commodity price shocks, restoring prices to its long-run trends. In conclusion, fundamental market forces of demand and supply as well as real economic aggregated demand shocks were the main contributors of the...

Consumer expectations towards origin-claimed food products. Compensation and acceptance for global trading system AgEcon
Giraud, Georges.
Origin- claimed food products mainstream gives diverse features over the world. The food labelling practices based on origin or provenance are frequently developed as a reaction to global trading system: private and NGO's initiatives (Fair Trade), enterprises in UK (Local Foods) and USA (Food Alliance), medals for winners in local exhibitions awards, or public regulation in European Union (PDO, PGI, Organic Farming). These practices claim at reaching consumer expectations. For a consumer who is frequently being uprooted and is stressed by his/her urban environment, the emotional content of where one's food is produced is greater than ever. With a longing for one's home, the consumer becomes an identity seeker. Origin, organic or fair trade food products...

Consumers' and Professionals' Responses to Situations Raising Ethical Questions AgEcon
Sirieix, Lucie; Gurviez, P.; Rohrig, C..
In this study we have attempted, in collaboration with an agrifood company, to compare and contrast the responses of consumers and professionals to the same set of situations raising ethical questions, in order to highlight the differences and the similarities of viewpoint between these two groups of stakeholders. In order to do this, we constructed multi-stakeholder scenarios comprising a description of the situation and the various possible approaches to managing the situation. We constructed two scenarios, dealing with the origin of the gelatin used in the company's products and the company's product information on livestock feed (GMO). This allowed us to: - study the extent of the professionals' ethical perceptions and the possible compromises between...

Co-operation and economic relationship as determinants for competitiveness in the food sector: the Spanish wheat to bread chain AgEcon
de Magistris, Tiziana; Gracia, Azucena.
The objective of the paper is to investigate the impact of co-operation amongst stakeholders of the food chain on enterprise competitiveness. The analysis focuses on the Spanish wheat to bread chain. A theoretical model is developed which covers the main components that define competitiveness (profitability, turnover, market share, customer loyalty and product quality), quality supply chain relationship (trust, commitment and satisfaction) and the main factors explaining supply chain relationship (i.e. quality and frequency of the communication, personal bounds, etc.). The Spanish wheat to bread supply chain has been chosen to empirically test the model. This sector is very fragmented all along the chain, with a high number of wheat farmers, millers and...

Croissance de jeunes palourdes (Venerupis semidecussata) en nurserie et en mer en fonction des conditions d'élevage ArchiMer
Lucas, Albert.
The japanese palourde Venerupis semidecussata was reared in the Bay of Brest, using hatchery reared spat. Experiments were performed with individuals of lenght 2 to 10 mm raised in a nursery, using raceways with slow running water enriched with unicellular algae, And also with individuals of lenght 8 to 20 mm raised at sea in suspended culture. It was observed that growth depends upon four groups of factors : (1) the functioning and equipment of the raceways, (2) the quantity and quality of the food, (3) the temperature and (4) various physico-chemical factors. When the equipment is satisfactory and when the physico-chemical factors are normal for the species in question, the rate of growth depends essentially on the quantity of food, provided that the...

DEMAND FOR FOOD QUANTITY AND QUALITY IN CHINA AgEcon
Gale, H. Frederick, Jr.; Huang, Kuo S..
As their incomes rise, Chinese consumers are changing their diets and demanding greater quality, convenience, and safety in food. Food expenditures grow faster than quantities purchased as income rises, suggesting that consumers with higher incomes purchase more expensive foods. The top-earning Chinese households appear to have reached a point where the income elasticity of demand for quantity of most foods is near zero. China’s food market is becoming segmented. The demand for quality by high-income households has fueled recent growth in modern food retail and sales of premium-priced food and beverage products. Food expenditures and incomes have grown much more slowly for rural and low-income urban households.

Determination of gender in the pearl oyster pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Chavez-villalba, Jorge; Soyez, Claude; Huvet, Arnaud; Gueguen, Yannick; Lo, Cedrik; Le Moullac, Gilles.
The pearl industry in French Polynesia is based on exploitation of natural stocks of the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera); it generates an annual turnover of 90 million euros. Improvements in pearl quality need genetic studies to improve the populations. This pearl oyster is a protandric species, where the sex-ratio normally is biased towards males. There is an increasing interest in gender control to find the mechanisms to augment female proportions for management purposes. This review summarizes information on exogenous and endogenous factors regulating gender in this and other bivalves and concludes that P. margaritifera is a protandric hermaphrodite, developing as a male during the first two years and without evidence of an effect from...

Did the WTO Play a Role in the Food Crisis? AgEcon
Meilke, Karl D..
When high prices or natural calamities result in starvation and political unrest in the developing world emergency food aid is the best short run response. However, over a longer time frame it is important to have in place international rules that allow the market to function to help alleviate food shortages rather than making them worse. Given Canada’s trading position we have a huge stake in getting these rules right. Although the future of the Doha Round is unclear there is still time to make a start on developing better rules for export prohibitions, restrictions and export taxes that would serve the world better in times of shortage. A first step would be effective disciplines on the use of export taxes, and export restrictions and embargo’s.

Dietary Assessment of Major Trends in U.S. Food Consumption, 1970-2005 AgEcon
Wells, Hodan Farah; Buzby, Jean C..
This report examines major trends in the amount of food available for consumption in the United States between 1970 and 2005 using data from the ERS Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System. The report also estimates whether Americans are meeting Federal dietary recommendations for each of the major food groups by comparing the data with dietary recommendations in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the MyPyramid Food Guidance System. Findings show that Americans do not meet the Federal dietary recommendations. In order to meet them, Americans would need to substantially lower their intake of added fats, refined grains, and added sugars and sweeteners and increase their consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lowfat milk and milk...

Discovering and Promoting Commodity Health Attributes: Programs and Issues AgEcon
Carman, Hoy F..
There is a growing consumer segment demanding healthy foods and diets, health and nutrition messages can expand food demand, and governments in the U.S. and EU, faced with increasing obesity and associated health outcomes, want consumers to have reliable information to choose healthy diets. California commodity organizations, charged with expanding the demand for almonds, avocados, strawberries and walnuts, are funding health and nutrition research as a means to discover a unique selling proposition for each product. Research and promotion effects are attracting interest by other commodity groups. Policy and regulatory issues abound.

Discussion: Economic Sustainability of Rural Areas AgEcon
Constance, Douglas H..
The three articles in this invited paper session examine value-added strategies related to agriculture and food at the state and federal level designed to enhance rural development. Two of the papers dealt with the GO TEXAN program and the other with organic agriculture. All three papers were well written and interesting, but all three also shed light on the problem of using classical economic theory to interpret differentiated agriculture and food products as opposed to undifferentiated commodities.

Disease Outbreaks and Agricultural Trade: The Case of Potatoes AgEcon
Clark, J. Stephen; Thibodeau, David R.; Grant, K. Gary; Prochazkova, Katerina.
This study analyzed the impact of PVYn and potato wart disease outbreaks in PEI on the potato industry. These disease outbreaks resulted in the loss of the US seed export market to PEI producers. The effects of the disease outbreaks were mitigated through value-added processing. Price premiums for processed potatoes allowed PEI potato producers to abandon seed exports without incurring losses. Evidence is presented to suggest that other countries have also used this approach when export restrictions were placed on domestic agricultural industries. Policy response to the two disease outbreaks include: i) development of a zones policy that helped to reopen markets into the US; and ii) financial compensation to producers above the minimum levels required...
