Fine mesquite pod meal on performance, palatability and feed preference in lambs Animal Sciences
Aguiar, Luzyanne Varjão; Pedreira, Márcio dos Santos; Silva, Herymá Giovane Oliveira; Caires, Dirlane Novais; Silva, Abias Santos; Silva, Lázaro Costa da.
We evaluated the effect of inclusion of fine mesquite pod meal (FPM) in the diet on performance, preference and palatability of diets in feedlot lambs. Five diets were formulated with increasing levels of FPM (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0%). For performance evaluation, the design was completely randomized with five treatments and seven replications. For palatability and preference analysis, the same design was used, but the treatments consisted of diets with 0 and 3% FPM and fourteen replications. The palatability was assessed considering the amount of feed consumed within 30 min., and the preference, considering the feed intake after 24 hours. FPM had no influence on weight gain, but caused a reduction in intake and an increase in dry matter digestibility for...

Food choice and health across the life course: A qualitative study examining food choice in older Irish adults AgEcon
Delaney, Mary; McCarthy, Mary.
Ireland has experienced much economic and social change in recent times along with rising levels of overweight. Two-thirds of adults are now overweight or obese. Excess weight is a major risk for chronic disease for all ages which heralds a great societal burden and presents challenges and opportunities for the food industry. Individual food choice is an important and complex factor to be understood in order for food manufacturers to enable healthy choices. It can be understood as a process in which patterns arise and change over time, influenced by a range of personal factors and environmental influences. This study aimed to gain insight into the key contextual influences on food choice patterns in older Irish adults of varied health status who have lived...

Food Demand Analysis: A New Approach AgEcon
Di Giuseppe, Stefania.
In this paper a method to examine how households make their food choice considering micronutrients through utility theory is applied. The findings support the argument that nutrients play an important roles in the demand for food. The method is illustrated using the raw data EIH 2000/2001 (Enquesta Integrata de Hogares) for a set of different food groups.

Food Plants Eaten by Amazonian Manatees (Trichechus inunguis, Mammalia : Sirenia) BABT
Colares,Ioni G.; Colares,Elton P..
To determine the feeding habits of the Amazonian manatee Trichechus inunguis in some Central Amazonian rivers and lakes, we compared plant epidermis found in the stomach contents and/or faeces of animals with a reference collection of plants present in the studied areas. Twenty five samples from digestive tracts of animals found dead and 25 faeces samples found floating were analyzed. From these samples, 24 aquatic macrophytes were identified. The Gramineae family was identified in 96% of the samples, Paspalum repens and Echinochloa polystachya being the most abundant in the samples. The second most frequent family was the Pontederiaceae primarily Eichhornia crassipes. During the high water period, the animals showed a more selective diet (eight identified...

Food Reserve Stocks and Critical Food Shortages - a Proposal Based on the Needs of Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Lind, Kim Martin.
This working paper examines the food security policy, where food security means ensuring an adequate supply of food for hungry people. In particular, the recommendations of FAO are being used as a measuring rod against which food security policies are assessed. By means of FAO's database a statistical analysis of all Sub-Saharan Africa countries with respect to measuring the incidence and severity of critical food shortages are carried out. Stock policies seem to have been the answer when issues of ensuring adequate supplies have surfaced. In the paper, an estimate of the costs of keeping stocks is provided, and the costs are quite staggering. Based on the statistical analysis an estimate of the number and volume of acute food shortages per year in...

In a recent report by risk assessment experts on the identification of food safety priorities using the Delphi technique, foodborne viruses were recognized among the top rated food safety priorities and have become a greater concern to the food industry over the past few years. Food safety experts agreed that control measures for viruses throughout the food chain are required. However, much still needs to be understood with regard to the effectiveness of these controls and how to properly validate their performance, whether it is personal hygiene of food handlers or the effects of processing of at risk foods or the interpretation and action required on positive virus test result. This manuscript provides a description of foodborne viruses and their...

FORECASTING FUTURE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOOD, AGRICULTURE, AND NATURAL RESOURCES HIGHER EDUCATION GRADUATES USING ADJUSTED BUREAU OF LABOR FORECASTS AgEcon
Bullock, K. Wayne; Litzenberg, Kerry K..
Forecasts of the number of future professionals required for an ongoing safe, efficient US food system are highly important. The demand for adequately prepared higher education graduates must be met by the US Food, Agriculture, and Natural Resources Education System. Without accurate forecasts of the human resource needs of the food sector of the economy, adequate professionals may not be available when needed. This research effort makes use of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) forecasted employment opportunities. The estimation of professionals required in the food and agriculture sectors of the economy is developed by selecting and manipulating data from the BLS model that is relevant to food and agriculture careers. These forecasts of needed...

GRAZING, GOODS AND GIRTH: DETERMINANTS AND EFFECTS AgEcon
Hamermesh, Daniel S..
Using the 2006-07 American Time Use Survey and its Eating and Health Module, I show that over half of adult Americans report grazing (secondary eating/drinking) on a typical day, with grazing time almost equaling primary eating/drinking time. An economic model predicts that higher wage rates (price of time) will lead to substitution of grazing for primary eating/drinking, especially by raising the number of grazing incidents relative to meals. This prediction is confirmed in these data. Eating meals more frequently is associated with lower BMI and better self-reported health, as is grazing more frequently. Food purchases are positively related to time spent eating—substitution of goods for time is difficult—but are lower when eating time is spread over...

HOUSEHOLD FOOD CHOICE IN FOUR FOOD CATEGORIES: HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY? AgEcon
Binkley, James K.; Golub, Alla A..
The interest of this study is the tradeoff between nutrition and taste in consumer food choice. We examine choice between more and less healthy versions of particular foods within four important grocery categories: breakfast cereal, milk, bread, and soft drinks. Within a category, products do not greatly differ in terms of cost and convenience, and nutritional differences are easily determined. Consumers are less likely to choose unhealthy foods due to cost or convenience advantages, or through ignorance. This makes the choice between taste and nutrition more apparent. We use annual expenditure data reported by a large sample of households participating in the AC Nielsen Homescan data system. For each of the food categories we develop a measure of...

Identificação dos insetos infestantes de alimentos através da micromorfologia de seus fragmentos Zoologia
Vargas,Carlos Henrry Bellot; Almeida,Armando Antunes de.
The identification of insect fragments showed that the infestation was done, mainly, by Coleoptera of the genus Sitophilus Sch›nherr, 1838 (Curculionidae) and Rhizoperthadominica (Fabricius, 1792) (Bostrychidae), that are caracteristic of internai infestation, and in lesser percentage by insects charac-teristic of externai infestation, as Crylolestes spp. (Cucujidae), Tribolium spp. (Tene-brionidae), Oryzaephilussurinamensis(Linnacus, 1758) (Cucujidae) and Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius, 1792) (Anobiidae). From the total of recovered and identified insect fragments, 59% were fragments of elytra, 23% of mandibles, and in minor percentage by tarsal segments, claws, tibial spurs, legs, tarsus, eyes, antennae, exuviae and larvae urogomphi.

Impact of socio-cultural and economic factors on vegetable consumption behaviours: case of Giresun province, Turkey Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Ugur,Atnan; Gok,Yasar; Ugur,Hacer Gok.
Many factors impact on food consumption behaviours. The aim of the study is to determine the impact of socio-demographic and ecological factors on vegetable consumption. A 14-question questionnaire was applied on a voluntary basis to 200 individuals who accepted to participate in the study. Their socio-demographic attributes and the vegetable consumption habits of their families were determined. Their average monthly budget for vegetables is € 31.82±12.72. The two attributes of purchased vegetables with most demand are cleanliness (61.5%) and freshness (22%). The maximum price per 1 kg of vegetables, which individuals with an income of € 301-450 can afford, is € 0.96, but for individuals with an income of > € 450, it is € 1.25. It was observed that the...
