Influence de la température sur la physiologie de l'huître Crassostrea ArchiMer
Le Gall, Jean-luc; Raillard, Olivier.
After four weeks' stabulation, at temperatures ranging from 30°C to 10°C for a given level of food (2.10 cells of Chaetoceros calcitrans.1(-1) ), a study of the growth and evolution of the biochemical contents of the oyster Crassostrea gigas showed a negative effect of high (30°C) and low (10°C) temperatures on growth; levels of total glucid and glycogen were inversely proportional to temperature and related to gametogenesis. At the same time measurements of the filtration rate, respiration and food consumption done at different levels of food (10(6) to 8.10(7) cells.1(-1) showed a better adaptation of the oysters to 20°C after one month.

Influence of food density and temperature on ingestion, growth and settlement of Pacific oyster larvae, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Rico Villa, Benjamin; Pouvreau, Stephane; Robert, Rene.
Ingestion, growth and metamorphosis of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, larvae were studied under controlled conditions of food density and temperature using a combination of a flow-through rearing system and a hydrobiological monitoring device. In a first experiment larvae were exposed to three different phytoplankton densities (12, 20 and 40 cells μl-1) while in a second trial larvae were reared at five different temperatures (17, 22, 25, 27 and 32°C). Both food concentration and temperature significantly affected the larval physiology throughout the entire development from D-veliger to young spat. Larvae survived over a wide range of both environmental parameters with high survival at the end of experiments. The feeding functional response...

IS A PUBLIC REGULATION OF FOOD PRICE VOLATILITY FEASIBLE IN AFRICA? AN ARCH APPROACH IN KENYA AgEcon
Maitre d'Hotel, Elodie; le Cotty, Tristan; Jayne, Thomas S..
The 2007-2008 food crisis and current food price swings led economists to re-evaluate the potential for policy instruments to manage food price volatility. Many developing countries recently pursued price regulation policies, but the difficulties of these policies in promoting price stability is not fully understood. In particular, the ability of a stabilization policy to lower food price volatility does not depend on the nature of the policy instrument only, but also on the institutional conditions of its implementation. Kenya is a particularly interesting case as it is characterized by a rather long tradition of public intervention, and by the persistence of highly volatile prices. The consistency of the policy use appears to be key factor influencing...

Is there an Intrahousehold Flypaper Effect? : Evidence from a School Feeding Program AgEcon
Jacoby, Hanan G..
Are public transfers targeted toward children largely neutralized by the household, as the theory of altruism implies, or is there an intrahousehold “flypaper effect” whereby such transfers “stick” to the child? This paper studies the impact of a school feeding program on child caloric intake in the Philippines. Because children are interviewed on school days and nonschool days, and because some schools offer a feeding program and others do not, the dietary impact of the program is identified under mild restrictions. The empirical results confirm an intrahousehold flypaper effect; indeed, they indicate virtually no intrahousehold reallocation of calories in response to the feeding program. In poorer households, however, children’s gains from the program...

Isolement et identification de vibrions halophiles d'une station experimentale de mariculture ArchiMer
Bruni, V; Crisafi, E; Maugeri, T; Zaccone, R.
110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify.

Italian Consumer Acceptance of Nutritionally Enhanced GM Food AgEcon
Canavari, Maurizio; Tisselli, Farid; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Scarpa, Riccardo.
The aim of this article is to evaluate Italian consumers’ acceptance and willingness to purchase GM foods based on the type of benefit (input vs output trait) and product (plant based vs animal based). Two surveys were administered in two consecutive years (2004 and 2005) and the data used to test for possible changes in consumer acceptance. The results of a multinomial logit analysis suggest that on average consumer acceptance for plant-based GM food was higher in 2005. This study confirmed the key role of information strategies to consumers, with the most relevant results being the role distorted information play in raising the consumer’s level of fear and perceived risk. Respondents also place a higher level of confidence on scientists who are generally...

L'élevage larvaire intensif du loup Dicentrarchus labrax. Influence de la lumière, de la densité en proies et de la température sur l'aluminium, sur le transit digestif et sur les performances zootechniques ArchiMer
Ronzani Cerqueira, Vinicius.
Several sea bass-rearing experiments were performed from hatching trough metamorphosis. The rearing units employed were 500 1 polyester tanks, where flow rate and temperature of seawater, light and suitable food (rotifer and artemia) were controlled. Stock density ranged between 50 and 100 larvae per liter. Individuals held in tanks with internal black walls developed faster and had a greater survival rate than those in white tanks. This suggests that a better contrast between preys and background assists the larvae to see food organisms more clearly. The sea bass larvae search for food is based only in vision and not trought mechanoreceptors or chemoreceptors. It was very difficult to evaluate the light intensity (50-5000 lux) influence on feeding,...

Local Food Marketing: Factors for Growth of Small Agri‐food Businesses in the UK AgEcon
Hingley, Martin; Boone, Julie; Haley, Simon.
This study aims to understand local food and explore the barriers to development for small innovative food businesses. Research was conducted through depth interviews and a survey in North‐West England. Results indicate that small business success can be subjective and performance dependent on business aims. Identified were issues concerning access to finance, burden of regulations and the need for support from industry networks and government. Lack of an official and recognised definition of the term “local food” had implications for marketing strategy. Small businesses recognise that customers are increasingly concerned with food provenance and traceability, but that they and their representative associations need to do more to make these links.

Megteremthető-e a globális élelmezésbiztonság? AgEcon
Kalman, Zoltan.
