Microparticulate feeds for Penaeid larvae ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
The mass production of penaeid larvae still depends on live foods such as diatoms, Chlorella and Artemia . However, it requires much facilities, maintenance expenses, and labor to produce a desired amount of life foods safely and constantly. Also, the nutritive value of planktonic organisms is occasionally variable and this makes the use of live food for mass culture restrictive. Therefore, it is necessary to develop microparticulate diets as a substitute for live foods to further increase the productivity of seed for shrimp culture.

Mixing models and stable isotopes as tools for research on feeding aquatic organisms Ciência Rural
Moraes,Cyntia Rafaela Ferreira de; Henry-Silva,Gustavo Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT: Implementation of mixture models in isotopic analysis has been increasing due to the need to analyze sources and understand their variations in relation to consumers, which requires an accurate determination of their discriminant rate and fractioning. In this context, we presented the main concepts related to the application of stable isotopes and mixing models, with the aim to analyze the benefits and problems of these tools in surveys on nutrition of aquatic organisms. The predominant methods identified included application of the models IsoSource, MixSIR, SIBER and SIAR, with the use of C and N isotopes in research with aquatic organisms. Studies in both freshwater and marine environments were evaluated to determine the relative contribution...

Molecular characterization of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from foods Rev. Microbiol.
Pimenta,Fabiana Cristina; Furlanetto,Sirdéia Maura Perrone; Mayer,Leonard W.; Timenetsky,Jorge; Santos,Manoel Armando Azevedo dos.
A total of 30 strains of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from different foods (16 of differents kinds of sausage, 14 cheese,) purchased at groceries of São Paulo City were ribotyped and analysed for the presence and expression of hemolysin gene and production of phosphatidylinositol-specific phosphalipase C - PI-PLC enzyme. The L. monocytogenes strains were differentiated into six ribotype classes. A total of 13 (43.3%) from these strains belong to the same ribotype (ribotype I), and was coincident to the ribotype of the standard L. monocytogenes prototype strain (ATCC-15313). The hemolytic activity was observed in 29 (96.7%) strains when incubated at 37oC, but not at 4oC. The direct colony hybridization method for hemolysin gene detection showed a...

Moving Toward the Food Guide Pyramid: Implications for U.S. Agriculture AgEcon
Young, C. Edwin; Kantor, Linda Scott.
Recent studies show that average diets differ considerably from Food Guide Pyramid recommendations. The gap between current consumption and recommendations is particularly large for caloric sweeteners, fats and oils, fruits, and certain vegetables, notably dark-green leafy and deep-yellow vegetables, and dry beans, peas, and lentils. The change in food consumption needed to meet Food Guide Pyramid serving recommendations will result in adjustments in U.S. agricultural production, trade, nonfood uses, and prices. The net adjustment in crop acreage is projected to be relatively small, about 2 percent of total cropland in 1991-95. However, this small net adjustment masks larger anticipated changes for some sectors, particularly sweeteners, fats and oils, and...

Natural radiation levels in powdered milk samples Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Melquiades,F. L.; Appoloni,C. R..
The control and monitoring of radioactive elements in foodstuffs is fundamental for human health maintenance. This work presents procedures to measure radioactivity levels in powdered milk samples and also a brief discussion of radionuclide transference from the environment to mankind. The measurements were performed utilizing a high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer using an HPGe detector. The results allowed the quantification of 40K, 137Cs and 208Tl radionuclides. For 40K the average activity was 482 ± 37 Bq/kg and for 137Cs and 208Tl the lower level of detection was, respectively, 3.7 ± 1.1 and 0.5 ± 0.2 (Bq/kg). The results obtained for the milk samples were compared to data found in the literature and to the limits established by the Brazilian...

Nutritional ecology of blowflies (Diptera, Calliphoridae): estimates of critical larval weight for pupation on two different Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ribeiro,Cássio da Silva; Von Zuben,Cláudio José.
Under natural environmental conditions, blowflies utilize discrete and ephemeral feeding resources such as decaying carcasses. Competition for food on such feeding substrates is usually very severe, and only the individuals that are capable of attaining the critical larval weight for pupation will be able to survive. This critical weight is hitherto unknown for several blowfly species; therefore, the current work is aimed at obtaining such a critical value for four blowfly species of the genera Chrysomya and Lucilia, deploying two types of feeding substrate, namely, artificial diet and macerated bovine meat. On the whole, the critical weights ranged from 30 to 35 mg. The lowest larval weight which permitted pupation was 30.0 mg for Chrysomya megacephala...

Nymph and adult biology of Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) feeding on cultivated and non-cultivated host plants Neotropical Entomology
Chocorosqui,Viviane R.; Panizzi,Antônio R..
The biology of the pentatomid Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) feeding on cultivated and non-cultivated plants was studied in the laboratory. Nymph mortality varied from ≈ 60 on corn (seed mature) to 77% on wheat (ear immature); no nymphs survived on seedlings of corn or wheat. Nymph developmental time on soybean, corn or wheat (seed, pod or ear) varied from 25.5 to 32.8 days. Body weight at adult emergence was similar and greater on most foods than on wheat ear. Nymphs fed preferentially on soybean (pod immature). On non-cultivated hosts, nymphs showed high mortality (73%) on crotalaria (pod immature); on tropical spiderwort (stem) all nymphs died. Nymphs took longer time to develop on crotalaria and/or on spiderwort than on soybean. Body weight at adult...

Occurrence and molecular characterization of different virulence-associated genes of Cronobacter sakazakii isolates from some foods and dust samples Ciência Rural
Demirci,Ülkü; Tekiner,İsmail Hakkı; Çakmak,Burcu; Özpınar,Haydar.
ABSTRACT: Among the Cronobacter genus, Cronobacter sakazakii is the most common species posing a severe health risk for newborns, infants and children. Some infant formulas, cereal-based foods, and food production environments may be the potential reservoirs of C. sakazakii. This pathogen possesses different virulence factors encoded by different virulence genes. Therefore, characterizing these genes is important for distinguishing pathogenic strains from nonpathogenic ones. The objective of this study was to characterize some virulence genes [OmpA, OmpX, zpx, and Cpa] by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in C. sakazakii isolates from a total of 120 samples (20 each of milk powder, starch, rice flour, semolina, infant formula and dust samples from...

On the Distribution of Net Benefits from Sustainability Initiatives in Agri-Food Supply Chains AgEcon
Ross, Brent; Amanor-Boadu, Vincent; Ross, Kara L..
Sustainability initiatives are frequently imposed on upstream supply chain members by their more powerful downstream partners. This paper assesses the challenges of estimating costs and benefits for participants and the difficulties associated with identifying their locations and effects in the supply chain. The paper argues that the success and endurance of agri-food supply chains that purport to pursue sustainability objectives depend critically on the distribution of the associated costs and benefits. It calls on supply chain leaders to give careful consideration to the distribution of net benefits across the chain to ensure that opportunism and moral hazard are minimized.

Oyster adenytate energy charge: response to levels of food ArchiMer
Moal, Jeanne; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Samain, Jean-francois; Daniel, Jean-yves; Bodoy, Alain.
Adenylatc Encrgy Charge (AEC) values of Crassostrea gigas (9 and 18 months old) cultured in ponds in Marennes-Oléron Bay (Atlantic coast, France) are reported. Two ponds were loaded with two different initial oyster biomasses in order to obtain different food conditions. The growth of oysters was different in the two ponds which corroborated the effectivences of attaining different food conditions. AEC level was different depending on the pond and was therefore related to food availability per unit oyster biomass. Well-fed oysters exhibited greater AEC values than poorly-fed oysters, throughout thc study. Information on nutritional situations for wild or cultured populations can therefore be obtained by AEC. In cach pond, the seasonal AEC variations were...
