Alcázar-Alay,Sylvia Carolina; Meireles,Maria Angela Almeida.
Present trends towards technologies and processes that increase the use of residues make starchy vegetal biomass an important alternative material in various applications due to starch’s versatility, low cost and ease of use when its physicochemical properties are altered. Starch is increasingly used in many industrial applications and as a renewable energy resource. Starch can be modified to enhance its positive attributes and eliminate deficiencies in its native characteristics. In this article, the state of knowledge on conventional and unconventional starches and their properties, characteristics, modifications and applications are reviewed.

Possible Implications for U.S. Agriculture From Adoption of Select Dietary Guidelines AgEcon
Buzby, Jean C.; Wells, Hodan Farah; Vocke, Gary.
To help Americans meet nutritional requirements while staying within caloric recommendations, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, and fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products. This report provides one view of the potential implications for U.S. agriculture if Americans changed their current consumption patterns to meet some of those guidelines. For Americans to meet the fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain recommendations, domestic crop acreage would need to increase by an estimated 7.4 million harvested acres, or 1.7 percent of total U.S. cropland in 2002. To meet the dairy guidelines, consumption of milk and milk products would have to increase by 66 percent; an increase of that...

Post-Moratorium EU Regulation of Genetically Modified Products: Triffid Flax AgEcon
Viju, Crina; Yeung, May T.; Kerr, William A..
The regulatory regime for contamination permits the imposition of import bans with neither a scientific justification nor a risk assessment. No scientific assessment of Triffid flax was done prior to the import ban. The import regime put in place to deal with the contamination of flax with the GM-flax CDC Triffid provides no rationale for the thresholds of safety established for the testing regime. The EU is consistently pushing for commercial, economic and social considerations to be included, along with science, in decision-making. Such considerations are often perceived as avenues for economic protection to creep into EU decision-making. Such considerations can, however, cut both ways. The Canada-EU testing regime for Triffid makes provision for, but...

Presence of parasitic structures in lettuces served in self-service restaurants of São Miguel do Oeste, Santa Catarina State, Brazil Biological Sciences
Vidigal, Tiago Mateus Andrade; Landivar, Elaine Eloiza Cortellini.
Consuming raw food like lettuce may carry protozoa cysts and helminth eggs, causing parasitic infections. Therefore, the parasitological analysis of this type of food it’s important for public health because it provides data on the hygiene conditions in which these vegetables were produced, transported, processed and handled until the ingestion. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of parasitic structures in samples of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) sold in self-service restaurants in São Miguel do Oeste, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The samples were randomly collected in 20 locations in duplicate, prepared according to the method of Hoffman, Pons, and Janer (1934) and analyzed with an optical light microscopy. The parasitic structures found were Cysts...

Price transmission along the food supply chain in the European Union AgEcon
Bukeviciute, Lina; Dierx, Adriaan; Ilzkovitz, Fabienne; Roty, Guillaume.
Agricultural commodities and consumer food prices have experienced strong variations over the last 2 years, both upwards and downwards. This increased volatility, combined with long-term prospects of rising food prices, highlights the necessity to increase the efficiency of the food supply chain to ensure consumer food prices reflect the evolution of inputs prices. This paper aims at better understanding price transmission mechanisms along the chain across European Union Member States. Significant differences across Member States in magnitude of pass-through of agricultural commodity prices variations to consumer prices, as well as price transmission asymmetries, suggest potential market fragmentation within the EU. Country-specific regulatory frameworks,...

Process versus product: which determines consumer demand for genetically modified apples? AgEcon
Kaye-Blake, William; Bicknell, Kathryn; Saunders, Caroline M..
One debate in the literature regarding consumers’ reactions to genetically modified food (GMF) centres on whether consumers react to the process of gene technology or to the specific GMF products. Results from a choice experiment survey in New Zealand indicate that consumers are heterogeneous with regard to GMF and that some modifications are viewed more positively than others. These findings suggest that for some consumers the process of gene technology is the decisive factor in evaluatingGMF, while for others the different potential GMF products are valued according to their enhanced attributes.

In order to analyse the diet of Schizodon intermedius Garavello & Britski, 1990, captures were made every season during the period of April/1990 to February/1991, using gillnets of different mesh size at Sertanópolis, a region of Paraná State. An analysis of stomach fullness degree was made upon 76 individuals (including young ones). A sample of 20 adult specimens was chose to compare the morphology of the digestive tract with the diet found. It was concluded that S. intermedius is a grazer herbivore whose principal diet consists of leaves and stalks of two monocotyledonous plants: Poaceae and/or Cyperaceae. This species shows quanlitative, but not qualitative feeding seasonal variations. It was verified that intestinal quotient of the species is X...

Regulatory Framework of Genetically Modified Plants in Japan Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute
Junichi Tanaka; Kentaro Kawaguchi.
[[abstract]]Japan regulates genetically modified plants within a framework of safety evaluations related to their consumption as food or animal feed and their impact on biological diversity. The evaluations are conducted by the Food Safety Commission under the Cabinet Office, the Agricultural Materials Council under the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), and the Biodiversity Impact Assessment Group under the MAFF and the Ministry of the Environment. Japan adopts the point of view that genetic modification technology shall be،،used with close attention to its safety". As of 2006, genetically modified plants are not cultivated in Japan. However large amounts of genetically modified crops, Such as soybeans, corn, rapeseed, and cotton,...

Remodeling of membrane lipids in gills of adult hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria during declining temperature ArchiMer
Parent, G; Pernet, Fabrice; Tremblay, R; Sevigny, J; Ouellette, M.
In a previous study, a major remodeling of lipids, consistent with the theory of homeoviscous adaptation, was observed in the juvenile hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria during a temperature reduction from 24 to -1 degrees C. In addition, the lipid remodeling varied between genetically distinct lines of hard clams. The present study examined whether adult hard clams originating from different locations and a selectively bred variety show differences related to their genetic characteristics in the remodeling of lipids that normally occur during decreasing temperatures. Wild hard clams from 4 locations in Atlantic Canada and the selectively bred M mercenaria var. notata were held at an aquaculture growout site located at the northern distribution limit of the...

Review and current status of the aquaculture potential for the mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus ArchiMer
Kraul, S.
The mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus , has excellent potential for aquaculture due to its fast growth (2 kg at 6 months, 9 kg at 1 year), good food conversion efficiency (30%, wet weight), high fecundity with natural captive spawns (200,000 eggs/female/2 days year round for a 1 year old female), and high price (US$ 9.00/kg wholesale in Hawaii).

Risk Analysis in Selected European and International Food Chains AgEcon
Ameseder, Christoph; Haas, Rainer; Fritz, Melanie; Schiefer, Gerhard.
The purpose of this study is to assess and evaluate the most important risks in selected European and international food chains from the perspective of the buying company. The primary objective is to identify the “non-acceptable” risks in terms of damage potential and likelihood of occurrence of value chains in the sectors grain, meat, fruit and vegetable, and olive oil. Data was collected by each partner of the European research project “e-trust” (FP6-CT-2006-043056) by conducting 81 qualitative expert interviews with business leaders in Europe (Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Spain) as well as in Brazil, Turkey, and the USA. The study focuses on a wider supply chain or network perspective for the risk assessment. Methodically the assessed...

Science in Sanitary and Phytosanitary Dispute Resolution AgEcon
Powell, Mark R..
The World Trade Organization Sanitary and Phytosanitary Agreement (SPS Agreement) relies heavily on science and expert organizations to avoid and resolve trade disputes over measures enacted under the rationale of food safety or plant and animal health protection. However, the state of science for sanitary and phytosanitary risk analysis is highly uncertain, and the SPS Agreement leaves many science policy issues unsettled. The international agencies charged under the SPS Agreement with harmonizing standards and forging international scientific consensus face a daunting and politically-charged task. Two case studies are briefly developed. In the first case, the international scientific consensus strongly supports the U.S. challenge of the European Union's...
