The objectives of this work were to determine whether and at which seed physiological maturity stage the diquat desiccant affects the tall oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius) seed quality and yield, as well as the proper storage period between harvest and sowing. Diquat desiccation was evaluated in applications during milk or dough seed maturation stages. Seeds conventionally produced and stored under traditional storage conditions were used for the analyses. Seed samples were drawn every 30th day after harvest (DAH). After the 240th DAH, samples were drawn every 90th day up the to 690th DAH. This study aimed to investigate the desiccation tolerance of Rhamnidium elaeocarpum Reissek seeds through physiological and biochemical alterations. Fruit were collected from the municipality of Jaupaci, Goias State, Brazil, when the water content of their seeds had a 37% wet basis (w.b.) and the seeds were subsequently kept in a drying oven with air circulation at a temperature of 35ºC until a water content was reached of 20 to 12% (w.b.). This study was aimed at evaluating the desiccation sensitivity in seeds of the tree Tapirira obtusa (Benth.) J. D. Mitchell collected from three different environments and subjected to two distinct drying speeds. Seeds were collected from a rocky area, in the "Cerrado", and in a riparian forest area, in the region of municipality of Lavras, State of Minas Gerais. En el presente trabajo, se propuso realizar una determinación bioquímica de la actividad enzimática de aminopeptidasa (tcAPE) durante los procesos de germinación y fermentación de la semilla de T. cacao L., así como amplificar los extremos 3’ de fragmentos de cDNA de los posibles genes codificantes. El trabajo inició con la determinación de la actividad enzimática de tcAPE. Development of ornamental seedlings and cuttings for hydroponics using different substrate CIGR Journal

This research paper focuses on investigating the effect of using various substrate materials on the development of seedlings for ornamental plants.  Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), Petunia (Compacta Enana Rosa) and Epipremnum aureum, Bermuda; Petunia and Epipremnum aureum were cultivated in different substrates.  Synthetic sponge (Polyurethane sponge), Rockwool and sterilized cotton were used as the substrate materials in each case where an experimental water-circulating apparatus was designed and installed to execute the test. Results showed that after 15 days, Bermuda grass in Rockwool reached a germination rate of 70% while it did not exceed 50% in sponge or in medically treated cotton.  The highest germination rate after 20 days for Petunia was...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of watermelon seedlings (cv. Crimson Sweet), irrigated with different concentrations of biosaline water of fish culture. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments, corresponding to biosaline water at different concentrations (0, 33, 50, 67 and 100%), and four replicates of 108 seedlings. ABSTRACT The season of harvest is one of the most important factors influencing seed quality. This study evaluated the effect of different harvesting times on the physiological quality of Coriandrum sativum L. seeds, cv. Palmeira. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six treatments (harvest times) and four replications. The experiment was conducted during the months of April to October 2010. The first moment to harvest seeds was carried out 15 days after full bloom, when approximately 50% of plants were in flowering phase. Water uptake kinetics of axes and cotyledons of Vigna radiata seeds has been studied during incubation at chilling temperature (4°C) and under cycloheximide treatment. Germination rate of scarified seeds was faster than intact seeds, which can be correlated with their comparative water uptake kinetics. Chilling temperature during incubation significantly slowed down water uptake by both intact and scarified seeds. Treatment with cycloheximide was also somewhat effective in retarding water uptake, but only in scarified seeds. Water uptake by axes isolated from intact seeds (attached or detached from the cotyledons) was inhibited completely by chilling temperature as well as by cycloheximide treatment while these treatments were ineffective in preventing...

Differentiation of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium flavoviride (Hyphomycetes) Rev. Microbiol.

The differentiation of a Brazilian isolate of Metarhizium flavoviride (CG 423), a promising candidate for the biocontrol of grasshoppers, was investigated. Conidia were spread onto solid medium (1% yeast extract, 2.8% agar, 96.2% distilled water), incubated at 28°C and observed during 26 h. Germination initiated as conidia size increased from 5.3 (±0.6) x 3.1 (±0.3) µm (0 h incubation) to 8.1 (±0.2) x 6.1 (±0.2) µm (8 h incubation). Germ tubes started to appear after 10 h incubation showing a high degree of multipolarity. Twenty six hours after inoculation, hyphal differentiation and anastomosis among hyphae from adjacent conidia were recorded. DISTINGUISHING Campa guianensis Aubl. FROM Campa procera D.C. (MELIACEAE) BY MORPHOLOGY OF YOUNG SEEDLINGS Acta Amazonica

Seedling morphology was studied in Campa guianensisAubl. and Carapa proceraD. C. from germination to 90 days age. In both species germination is hypogeal and cryptocotylar. Both have rare albino seedlings. Though both species have compound leaves when adult, C, proceraputs out an average total of six simple leaves at germination, while leaves of C. guianensisare compound at all stages. This is the best diagnostic character for separation of the two species at the young seedling stage. Not diagnostic, but none the less useful, is the fact, that polyembryonic seeds are often found in C. procera,but not observed in C guianensis.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade genética entre 24 populações de maracujazeiro-amarelo, discriminando os caracteres mais importantes na avaliação da divergência genética, com base em características das plântulas. Foram coletadas sementes de frutos obtidos a partir de polinização natural de vinte e quatro populações segregantes de meios-irmãos de maracujazeiro-amarelo. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em vinte e quatro tratamentos (populações segregantes), com quatro repetições, considerando-se como unidade experimental cada grupo de 50 sementes. Dormancy breaking and germination of Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong seed BABT

Enterolobium contortisiliquum (Vell.) Morong. is a Mimosaceae tropical tree species recommended for heterogeneous reforestation of degraded tropical areas. "Timburi" seeds present low germination due to the high degree of seed dormancy. Different methods to overcome seed dormancy was compared: sanding, sanding followed by 24 hours water (25ºC) soaking, imbibition in boiling water followed by exposure to water at room temperature (28ºC), and concentrated sulfuric acid (5, 15, 30, 60, 120 or 180 minutes) followed by washing with tap water.
