Opportunities for Producing Table Grapes in Egypt for the Export Market: A Decision Case Study AgEcon
Diab, Yaser A.A.; Mousa, Magdi A.A.; Warnock, Daniel F.; Hahn, David E..
The Barakat Fruit Farm desires to increase their share of the exportable grape market in Egypt. Unfortunately, the grape cultivars currently cultivated by the farm bear fruit after the early market window to the European Union when prices are high. An analysis of the company, competition, consumer, market channel, and conditions, provides insight into possible solutions to the challenges faced by the farm management. Designed for undergraduate classroom use, this case encourages students to think outside of traditional production techniques to arrive at solutions that are viable from both crop culture and financial standpoints.

PHOTOSYNTHETIC PERFORMANCE AND LEAF WATER POTENTIAL OF GULUPA (Passiflora edulis Sims, PASSIFLORACEAE) IN THE REPRODUCTIVE PHASE IN THREE LOCATIONS IN THE COLOMBIAN ANDES Acta biol.Colomb.
PEREZ MARTINEZ,Laura Victoria; MELGAREJO,Luz Marina.
Gulupa, Passiflora edulis Sims (Passifloraceae), is an important fruit due to its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics and its demand in the international market; however, very few studies have been conducted for studying its Ecophysiology. Until now, this crop has spread throughout the country through empirical knowledge without data that indicate the zones that are more suitable for its cultivation. For this reason, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence (photosystem II operating efficiency and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry) and leaf water potential were measured in three different locations of Cundinamarca department (Chia [2610 m a.s.l., 14 °C], Granada [2230 m a.s.l., 15 °C] and...

Policy interventions to promote the adoption of water saving sprinkler systems: the case of lettuce on the Gnangara Mound AgEcon
Brennan, Donna C..
The potential for improving irrigation scheduling decisions and adoption of more efficient irrigation systems is explored using a bioeconomic simulation model of lettuce production on the Gnangara Mound near Perth, Western Australia. Sandy soils with poor water and nutrient holding capacity are associated with declining marginal productivity of water at high water use, which would create an incentive to reduce water use and to adopt closer sprinkler spacing if farmers had correct information about the declining marginal productivity of water. Incorrect perceptions regarding water–yield relationships lead to over use of water by up to 50 per cent and reduce profits by $475 per crop hectare (12 per cent) in the short run, and remove the incentive to adopt...

Shelaby, Ayman A.; Semida, Wael M.; Warnock, Daniel F.; Hahn, David E..
The AgroFood Company, which currently exports fresh chili peppers to European clients, desires to expand the product mix offered. The company, as it expands its production of fresh peppers for export, has an increasing supply of grade 2 peppers that are unmarketable in Egypt. However, an attractive market for processed frozen chili peppers exists in Europe. To expand their client base, capitalize on a value added product, and minimize product waste, the AgroFood Company desires to develop processing practices for chili peppers produced in Egypt. The AgroFood Company would like to identify its options in the processed pepper market. An analysis of the company, competition, consumer, market channel, and conditions, provides insight into possible solutions to...

Producing and Procuring Horticultural Crops with Chinese Characteristics: Why Small Farmers Are Thriving and Supermarkets Are Absent in Rural China AgEcon
Wang, Honglin; Dong, Xiaoxia; Huang, Jikun; Rozelle, Scott; Reardon, Thomas.
The supermarket revolution has arrived in China and is spreading as fast as or faster than anywhere in the world. As the demand for vegetables, fruit, nuts and other high valued products have risen, urban retailers are finding new venues seized on niche and today have over $55 billion in sales, more than a third of the urban food market. However, the experience of many developing countries suggests that there could be serious distributional impacts of the rising of supermarkets. There is concern among policy makers and academics that poor, small farmers might be excluded from market. The main goal of our paper is to understand what types of farmers have been able to participate in the horticultural revolution, how they interact with markets and how...

Quantitative description of the fruit industry and fruit supply chains in Poland AgEcon
Lemanowicz, M.; Krukowski, A..
The development of consumer-driven, efficient, responsive and innovative supply chains is crucial for the growth of fruit consumption in Europe and for a competitive, sustainable fruit sector. Currently, fruit supply chains are characterized by a relatively low level of consumer orientation and consumer-driven innovations. The awareness of the functioning of supply chains in the European fruit sector should be increased to be able to increase the level of consumer-drivenness, efficiency, and responsiveness of fruit supply chains. This paper presents the results of review of fruit supply chains’ from the fruit industry in Poland. The analysis of supply chains is preceded by a review of fruit consumption, fruit production, trade characteristic and trends....

DÍAZ, M.I.H.; LAFFITA, M.C.; PLACERES, V.M.; VELOZ, A.O.; PULIDO, J.M.S.; GUERRERO, O.B..
Relationships between social forms of organic horticultural production and indicators of environmental quality: a multidimensional approach in Brazil. Repositório Alice
BELLON, S.; ABREU, L. S. de; VALARINI, P. J..
Organic farming (OF) is increasingly considered as a possible alternative for designing a "new rural" in Brazil, where OF covers a wide range of production and certification systems. However, the ways small farmers adopt OF in green belts to meet an urban demand in organic vegetables have not been extensively investigated. Likewise, the impact of such practices on environmental quality components has not been sufficiently documented. Our objective was to relate forms of organisation to environmental assessment in a watershed where organic horticulture significantly contributes to landscape and water quality. We showed how small farmers were organised or how they organised themselves to meet urban demands and develop OF. We assumed that associated practices...

Semi-Parametric Modeling of Investments in Energy Installations AgEcon
Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Pietola, Kyosti.
This paper applies a semi-parametric approach to estimating a generalised model of investments in energy installations. The model accounts for irreversibility and lumpiness of investments by linking a parametric specification of the unobservable dynamic shadow price to observed investment behaviour using a non-parametric specification of the adjustment cost function. The results suggest that marginal costs of investments in energy installations increase quickly at small investment levels, whereas the increase slows down at higher investment levels. Therefore, standard parametric adjustment cost models are likely biased such that they over-estimate small investments and under-estimate large investments.

Studies on divergence of Hevea brasiliensis clones for yield and related traits during peak yielding seasons of Tripura Eprints@IARI
Vinod, K K.
A study was carried out in ten oriental clones of Hevea hrasiliensis, planted in a clone evaluation trial in Tripura (North East India) to understand the clonal variation and environmental influence on phenotypic expression of yield and related traits during two peak yielding seasons. Phenotypic coefficient of variation for plugging index (PI), inorganic phosphorus (Pi), sucrose content (SC), total volume (TV) and dry rubber yield (RY) was high when compared to that for initial flow (IF), dry rubber content (DRC) and total, solids content (TSC). Mean performance of clones RRI1 105, RRIM 600 and PB 235 was better for yield and related traits. These clones had less outflow of sucrose indicating better efficiency of metabolism. Stability of clones decreased...
