AN IMPERFECTLY COMPETITIVE MARKET MODEL OF THE U.S. LETTUCE INDUSTRY AgEcon
Hammig, Michael D.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C..
An econometric model was specified to represent the U.S. lettuce industry. Cursory examination of the industry structure suggests that imperfect competition may prevail in the lettuce market. Therefore, relations were specified that allowed for the possibility of imperfectly competitive behavior to affect market equilibrium outcomes. Specifically, a supply price equation was specified to account for the influence of market power of large growers, particularly during seasons of geographically concentrated production. Results do not contradict the hypothesis that imperfect competition exists in the lettuce market.

AN INCOMPLETE CONTRACTS MODEL OF DAIRY ENTERPRISE ORGANIZATION AgEcon
Mussell, Al; Eidman, Vernon R..
An empirical incomplete contracts approach is used to analyze optimal integration schemes in a Minnesota dairy farm supply chain that transfers feed and manure. The results show that the forage enterprise is the constraining factor. The preferred ownership structure is for a forage producer to own cropping and dairy assets.

An Innovative Tool to Assess Marketing Capabilities of Traditional Producers within the European Food Industry AgEcon
Banterle, Alessandro; Carraresi, Laura; Stranieri, Stefanella.
The purpose of this paper is to assess the marketing management capabilities of SMEs producing traditional food products in EU throughout the development of a benchmarking tool. SMEs represent the greater part of European food firms and they find it very difficult to adapt to market changes, and to compete with big enterprises. In this context, marketing management plays a key role in good SMEs performances in the market. The benchmarking tool, utilised to assess marketing capabilities, is aimed at improving critical points in the marketing area of traditional food firms by following the example of the best ones. This method is developed in the innovative form of an interactive questionnaire published on the Web. At the moment the sample is composed by 60...

An Ordered Tobit Model of Market Participation: Evidence from Kenya and Ethiopia AgEcon
Bellemare, Marc F.; Barrett, Christopher B..
Do rural households in developing countries make market participation and volume decisions simultaneously or sequentially? This article develops a two-stage econometric model that allows testing between these two competing hypotheses regarding household-level market behavior. The first stage models the household's choice of whether to be a net buyer, autarkic, or a net seller in the market. The second stage models the quantity bought (sold) for net buyers (sellers) based on observable household characteristics. Using household data from Kenya and Ethiopia on livestock markets, we find evidence in favor of sequential decision-making, the welfare implications of which we discuss.

ANÁLISE COMPARATIVA DA VIABILIDADE ECONÔMICA DOS SISTEMAS DE PRODUÇÃO CONVENCIONAL E INTEGRADO DE CAFÉ AgEcon
Pereira, Vanessa da Fonseca; Mendonca, Talles Girardi de; Reis, Bricio dos Santos.
Due to growing consumer demands regarding product quality and the social and environmental aspects of the production process, there is a need to redefine the agricultural productive structure so as to make it sustainable. The Integrated Production System in Coffee (CIP) aims to meet these new requirement standards. The system, however, is still very recent and requires more detailed studies to identify its strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the objective of this work is to carry out a comparative analysis of the economic viability and the risk associated to the conventional and integrated systems of coffee production in the farm property of São João, in the Coimbra district in Minas Gerais state. The method used was the calculation of the viability and...

ANÁLISE DA ATIVIDADE FLORESTAL NO PARÁ ATRAVÉS DA MATRIZ DE CONTABILIDADE SOCIAL AgEcon

Grunow, Aloisio; Gallon, Alessandra Vasconcelos; Beuren, Ilse Maria.
In a competitive environment, it is not enough to simply coordinate and promote the efficiency of a company’s internal activities. It is also necessary to ensure that the activities which form part of the company’s “value chain” are organized in a competitive way. From this perspective, the objective of this article is to analyze the “value chain” of poultry production and the cost of animal feed in every phase of the Seara Alimentos S.A chain. The methodology consisted of exploratory research in a case study using a predominantly qualitative approach. The results of the study are the stages of the productive cycle and the costs of the animal feed throughout the “value chain” in a poultry agribusiness. It was concluded that estimating the production’s...

ANÁLISE DA ESTRATÉGIA TECNOLÓGICA EM EMPRESAS AGROINDUSTRIAIS – O CASO DA COLASCRIC AgEcon
Queiroz, Timoteo Ramos; Machado, Joao Guilherme de Camargo Ferraz; Bouroullec, Melise Dantas Machado.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the technological management in a dairy industry, making it possible to suggest improvements. An open-ended questionnaire was applied, considering two main points: the classification and comprehension of the company’s performance in relation to the technologies available and the understanding of the industry’s technological motivations, making it possible to analyze technological behaviors, forms of acquisition and adoption of technological innovations. It was observed that the company loses competitiveness due to the technology adopted, when compared to bigger players and when the distribution of its products is carried out through supermarkets. The changes introduced in the products’ portfolio were of public-domain,...

Análise da estrutura de mercado na cadeia produtiva do leite no período de 1998 a 2008 AgEcon
Barros, Fabiano Luiz Alves; Lima, Joao Ricardo Ferreira de; Fernandes, Rosangela Aparecida Soares.
The dairy industry productive chain is among the most important domestic agricultural and cattle raising products, accounting for a significant part of agribusiness. In the last years, this sector has undergone significant structural changes, with increased participation of relatively smaller enterprises and reduced number of larger enterprises in the market. The aim of this work is to understand the dynamics between industry and retail performance and the effect on the prices paid to dairy producers. Specifically, this work aims to calculate the sector’s concentration indexes and causality indexes between the prices paid to the producer, the industry markup and the retail prices. Based on price temporal series, a VAR model was estimated and the Granger...

ANÁLISE DAS AGROINDÚSTRIAS DE PEQUENO PORTE: UM ESTUDO COMPARATIVO DA POSSIBILIDADE DE FORMAÇÃO DE REDES EM DUAS REGIÕES DO ESTADO DE SANTA CATARINA AgEcon
Santos Junior, Silvio; Lago, Adriano; Mendonca, Erica Silva; Rosa, Nadir Paula Da; Paz, Jozeane Moreira Da.

ANÁLISE DOS PROCESSOS DE DECISÃO NOS AGRONEGÓCIOS: UMA APLICAÇÃO PARA A CADEIA DO BIODIESEL NO RIO GRANDE DO SUL AgEcon
Rathmann, Regis; Hoff, Debora Nayar; Santos, Omar Inacio Benedetti; Dutra, Alberto Silva.

ANALYSE DER WETTBEWERBSPROZESSE IN DER POLNISCHEN FLEISCHINDUSTRIE SEIT TRANSFORMATIONSBEGINN AgEcon
Pieniadz, Agata; Rudolph, Dirk W.; Wandel, Jurgen.
It is the objective of the present study to examine the competitive processes within the Polish meat processing industry during the first six years of transformation empirically. In particular, two questions were posed: How did the intensity of competition develop in this sector since the beginning of the transformation process? What are the factors that did further or impede individual firm growth? The intensity of static competition in input procurement did increase slightly during the transformation process, but the intensity of dynamic competition in selling output, which is still high, did decrease. The results of an econometric analysis of market share development showed that below average initial firm size and above average input procurement prices...

ANALYSIS OF CHANGING METHODS OF VERTICAL COORDINATION IN THE PORK INDUSTRY AgEcon
Martinez, Stephen W.; Smith, Kevin E.; Zering, Kelly D..
This study examines the motivation behind contracts and vertical integration in the pork industry, and simulates the effects of potential improvements in coordination. Incentives related to lowering costs of measuring and sorting hogs, and protecting against opportunistic behavior associated with specific assets, can result in hog quality improvements. A framework for simulating the effects of increased coordination through contracts and vertical integration was developed and used to evaluate potential improvements in leanness. Although simulations suggest only modest changes in pork prices and supplies, gains in consumers' surplus could be substantial for larger demand shifts due to quality improvements.
