Analysis of Consumer Attitudes and Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Functional Foods AgEcon
Di Pasquale, Jorgelina; Adinolfi, Felice; Capitanio, Fabian.
The objective of this study is to analyze consumer behaviour in relation to functional foods by a direct survey. To this end, the proposal is an analysis of the reasons for choosing to consume this type of food or not, accompanied by a supplementary investigation, mostly to assess the relationship between consumption patterns and willingness to pay (WTP) for the most common categories of functional foods, such as milk fortified with CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Our research shows that a proportion of the population is unaware of the existence of functional foods and their properties. Moreover, it shows that when the concept of functional foods is explained to consumers, this creates a greater willingness to pay for such food, which is strongly linked to...

Analysis of Grain Supply Chain Performance Based on Relative Impact of Channel Coordinator's Objectives on Firm Level Objectives AgEcon
Baiyee-Mbi, Agbor-Baiyee; Mazzocco, Michael A..
A fuzzy multi-objective programming model is used to analyze the optimal decisions in a multi-objective grain supply chain in which the firm-level firm goals are conflicting with the channel coordinator's goals. The relative impact of the channel coordinator's goals on performance of the supply chain is determined through a linear weighting method. The study finds that prioritizing the channel coordinator's goals enhances the overall performance of the system.

ANALYSIS OF STRATEGIC MARKETING DECISIONS FOR ORGANIC AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS: A CASE STUDY AgEcon
Peterson, H. Christopher; Phillips, Jon C..
This article is a business strategy case study of a group of agricultural producers. One aspect of their strategic decision is whether or not to establish a firm to market their organic vegetables jointly. Another aspect of the decision is which distribution channel to pursue. Data for the paper were obtained from multiple sources, including trade journals, academic journals, and directed interviews with key informants from industry, academic institutions, and government. Face-to-face, structured interviews with members of the grower group were also conducted to obtain data about their resources and skills. An overview of conditions facing the organic vegetable industry (especially demand conditions) is included. The results could apply to other...

ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT ON UK SUGAR PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY OF REFORMING THE EU SUGAR REGIME AgEcon
Renwick, Alan W.; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar.
The purpose of the paper is examining the potential implications for the UK sugar beet sector of the EU sugar regime reform. Although the reform has yet to be formalised, the initial proposals centre on price and quota cuts. Using panel data from the Farm Business Survey for England, the paper estimates two cost functions: one for the sugar enterprise and another for the cropping part of the farm (i.e., excludes any livestock enterprise) and use them to analyse the impacts on profitability and costs of three possible reform scenarios: a 25 per cent cut in UK quota, a 25 per cent cut in price, a 40 per cent cut in price. The results show that the largest gains in terms of economic efficiency would be achieved under the 40 per cent price cut; however, the...

Analysis of the theory of intermediaries and firm in rural socialized service organizations AgEcon
Li, Wu; Hu, Zhen-peng.
We use Sperber's intermediairies and the firm theory to analyze the rural socialized service organizations. By studying the case of the melon association in Beihe Village of Uqiao Township in Beijing, we find that the basic existing objective of this association is to save transaction cost. The theoretical research and case analysis results show that the dispersed peasants are unable to solve the contradiction between small-scale production and large-scale market. However, the rural socialized service organizations, the purpose of which is to serve the benefit of the peasants, can save the transaction cost of peasants and safeguard the economic interests of the peasants.

Antitrust Analysis of Supermarket Retailing: Common Global Concerns that Play Out in Local Markets AgEcon
Cotterill, Ronald W..
This paper reviews the basic antitrust standards for the supermarket industry including definition of product and geographic markets and the exercise of coordinated and unilateral market power. It surveys the structure-conduct-performance and the New Empirical Industrial Organization literature to highlight alternative tests for supermarket power. The focus is a supermarket chain’s ability to exercise buyer as well as seller power. Recent research on vertical pricing topics including noncompetitive pricing games, double marginalization, private labels, vertical foreclosure, vertical price leadership and price transmission expand the analysis to market channel pricing issues. The availability of comprehensive scanner data, new economic theory and extensive...

Antitrust analysis of supermarkets: global concerns playing out in local markets AgEcon
Cotterill, Ronald W..
This paper reviews the basic components of antitrust analysis for the supermarket industry, including definition of product and geographic markets and the measurement of market power. The analysis of prices and profits in a market structure context remains important, especially in countries such as Australia with very high supermarket concentration. Firm and brand level New Empirical Industrial Organisation models of demand and oligopoly pricing also provide insights for evaluating antitrust claims. Recent research on vertical pricing games and price transmission expand the analysis to market channel pricing issues, including coalescing power by supermarkets and food manufacturers. The issues and approaches explained in this paper are relevant for...

ANTITRUST DAMAGE THEORY AgEcon
Dahl, Dale C..
The law of judicial remedies deals with the nature and scope of relief afforded a plaintiff following appropriate court procedures and after establishment of a substantive right. These remedies usually fall in one of four categories: (1) damages, (2) restitution, (3) coercion and (4) declaration. This presentation will deal principally with the damages remedy, but a few thoughts regarding the use of a restitutionary remedy are introduced toward the end of these remarks.

APLICAÇÃO DA ANÁLISE ENVOLTÓRIA DE DADOS (DEA) PARA AVALIAÇÃO DE EFICIÊNCIA DE USINAS DE AÇÚCAR E ÁLCOOL DA REGIÃO NORDESTE DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO AgEcon
Salgado Junior, Alexandre Pereira; Bonacim, Carlos Alberto Grespan; Pacagnella Junior, Antonio Carlos.
This aim of this article is to analyze the relation of size and operational efficiency of sugar and ethanol plants in the northeastern region of São Paulo state. In order to achieve this goal, a survey was conducted to identify the consumption of the main resources (inputs) and product creation (outputs) in a random sample of twenty six units, which allowed for their classification according to size. This enabled the creation of an efficiency ranking, using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), whose variables were chosen by the stepwise method. The results suggest that, for the plants studied, there is no direct relation between size and operational efficiency, which can be explained by technical aspects associated to the inputs. The results provide subsides...

APRENDIZAGEM TRANSFORMATIVA NO ESPAÇO ORGANIZACIONAL: UMA ANÁLISE DA PROPOSTA ANDRAGÓGICA DA PETROBRÁS AgEcon
Benedicto, Samuel Carvalho de; Brito, Mozar Jose de; Lima, Juvencio Braga de.
In this new century, organizational learning assumes a great relevance. It was sought by means of that research work to explore the literature and to present some theoretical reflections about learning process in adults as an attempt of better understanding the paradigms of analysis turned to the process of learning in organizations. The theoretical construct of this investigation is centered on the theory of the transformative learning of adults developed by Merizow (1991, 1997). This work has as the central goal to investigate, under the optics of the theory, the andragogical proposal of Petrobras. More specifically, it was intended in this investigation: i) redeem some aspects of history of this organization, distinguishing the elements that structured...

Are Fruit Juice Categories Separable? AgEcon
Knight, Erika P.; House, Lisa; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Spreen, Thomas H..
Supermarket shelves are saturated with numerous varieties and brands of juice beverages. This high level of assortment has dramatically changed beverage consumption patterns and trends throughout the United States. In fact, during 2004-2005, energy and sport drinks experienced significant increases in sales, 65.9% and 20.6 %, respectively. During the same period of time, refrigerated juice sales increased a mere 2.2%, shelved non-fruit drinks decreased 0.9%, bottled juices and cocktails both decreased 1.5 % and frozen juice decreased by 12.8% (Food Industry Review 2006). The beverage industry has undergone many transformations, but consumer theory states that a shift in demand for one good has to be compensated by a shift in the opposite directions in the...

At the present time, the State of Pará is the third in the ranking of exports and concentrates 75% of the extracted wood from the nation’s native forests. Of the extracted wood from the Legal Amazon, 64% is directed to the national market while 36% is directed to export markets. The objective of this study was identify and to map, using the Normalized Index of Concentration (NIC), during the 1998 to 2004 period, the municipalities which are specialized in the forest, wood and furniture activities and that show significant potential to be transformed in local clusters. The results showed the existence of nine municipalities specialized, simultaneously, in the two activities, indicating the possibility of implementing public policies directed to influence...

ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF ECR ON FINANCIAL AND OPERATING PERFORMANCE AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J.; Mayberry, Matthew; Wilson, Christine A.; Boehlje, Michael.
A debate has emerged in the literature and trade press whether the adoption of Efficient Consumer Response (ECR), the supply chain management initiatives for the food industry, leads to improved inventory and financial performance. Using regression analysis, the financial performance for adopters of ECR is about 3 to 4% higher than for non-adopters. However, the growth in profit does not appear to come from improved performance for traditional inventory measures (such as inventory turnover, inventory-to-sales, or inventory-to-assets). The driving force behind these improved financial measures can be attributed to changes leading to a shorter cash conversion cycle. In addition, size matters; ECR is more effective due to economies of scale, information...

ASSESSING THE EFFECTS OF THE REFORM OF THE EU RICE COMMON MARKET ORGANISATION AgEcon
Conforti, Piero.
The paper is aimed at assessing the effects of the reform of the Common Market Organisation for rice proposed by the EU Commission in 2000. AGLINK, the OECD partial model, is employed to simulate the effects for the EU as a whole, both in terms of deviations from the standard baseline, and from a modified baseline that includes indica and japonica rice as two different products. Results in terms of change in market prices are introduced as exogenous price shocks in a Positive Mathematical Programming Model, run for Italian rice-producing provinces on the basis of the Farm Accounting Data Network data, in order to assess the effects on local supply. Results indicate a fall in EU rice prices ranging from 15% to 25% as a consequence of the proposed reform,...

Assessment on Merger and Acquisition Risk of Agricultural Manufacturing Enterprises in China AgEcon
Bian, Kuanjiang; Yang, Weiwu.
Composition of merger and acquisition risk of agricultural manufacturing enterprises in China is analyzed, which is mainly strategic risk, external risk, transaction risk and integrated risk. And there are a total of 16 specific sources of risk. Concrete assessment methods for merger and acquisition risk of agricultural manufacturing enterprises are introduced. Firstly, set up the risk factor sets at first and second layers and divide merger and acquisition risk into 5 layers; establish risk assessment matrix according to the score by expert group. Secondly, determine the weights of the various risk factors by the ideology of information entropy. Finally, find out the subordinated vector of risk factor, construct risk assessment matrix, calculate the...
