A General Equilibrium Analysis of Foreign and Domestic Demand Shocks Arising from Mad Cow Disease in the United States AgEcon
Devadoss, Stephen; Holland, David W.; Stodick, Leroy; Ghosh, Joydeep.
The discovery of the first case of mad cow disease in the United States in 2003 reverberated across the beef and cattle industry. This study employs a general equilibrium model to analyze the potential economic effects of mad cow disease on the beef, cattle, and other meat industries under three scenarios, ranging form most favorable to most pessimistic. The scenario with 90% foreign demand decline and 10% domestic demand reduction generates results consistent with the actual outcomes after the mad cow disease outbreak. Only if domestic demand declines significantly will the economic hardship in the U.S. beef and cattle industry be very large.

A GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM ANALYSIS OF JAPANESE RICE MARKET TRADE LIBERALIZATION AgEcon
Taniguchi, Kiyoshi.
The main interest of this study is to simulate the domestic rice market under full trade liberalization. Results show that full trade liberalization is welfare enhancing for non-farm as well as farm households, primarily through lower consumer prices. These simulation results apparently undermine the government’'s argument against trade liberalization.

A General Equilibrium Analysis of the Impact of Inward FDI on Ghana: The Role of Complementary Policies AgEcon
Arbenser, Lawrence.
The need for external capital (FDI) inflow to finance the current account deficit of developing countries cannot be over-emphasized. Foreign direct investment takes predominance over other types of capital inflow into developing countries. How would an increase in FDI and a reduction in import tariff levels in isolation affect household welfare and other macroeconomic indicators? How would the concurrent application of the two enhance the expected impact? This paper explores the above questions by using a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for Ghana, implemented in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) to carry out specific counterfactual simulations. This paper concludes that the primary benefit of an increase in FDI inflow for a...

A GENERAL WELFARE DECOMPOSITION FOR CGE MODELS AgEcon
Hanslow, Kevin.
Huff and Hertel (2001) derive a welfare decomposition for the equivalent variation in the GTAP model. The derivation appears to be very specific to GTAP. Nevertheless, it contains nearly all the ingredients required for performing welfare decomposition for any CGE model. In this paper, the approach of Huff and Hertel (2001) is generalised to derive a welfare decomposition that can be applied to most, if not all, CGE models. General production and utility functions are accommodated, as are foreign income flows. A brief guide to coding the proposed welfare decomposition in GEMPACK is also provided. The decomposition is applied to decomposing the equivalent variation in GTAP.

A GLOBAL ANALYSIS OF AGRICULTURAL TRADE REFORM IN WTO MEMBER COUNTRIES AgEcon
Diao, Xinshen; Somwaru, Agapi; Roe, Terry L..
The effect on production, trade and well-being from the granting of market access, removing export subsidies, and eliminating trade-distorting forms of direct support to farmers in WTO member countries is analyzed from a world-wide general equilibrium perspective using the most recently available data. The results suggest that removing trade barriers, subsidies and support will cause aggregate world prices of agricultural commodities to rise by over 11 percent relative to an index of all other prices. Agricultural support and protection in the developed countries is found to be the major cause of low agricultural prices, and implicitly, a tax on net agricultural exporters in developing countries. Livestock product prices are likely to increase the most...

A GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT ORGANIZATION (GEO) AND THE WORLD TRADING SYSTEM: PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS AgEcon
Runge, C. Ford.
This paper traces the evolution of the debate over a GEO, and analyzes its problems and opportunities in the world trading system. It first considers the genesis of proposals for a GEO, and provides a short historical account. Second, it offers one view of what a GEO might entail. The next two sections offer a brief summary of some of the main arguments for and against such a body. The fifth section discusses issues of implementation, and the relationship between a GEO and existing institutions with environmental or trade responsibilities, such as UNEP and the WTO. It also considers whether a GEO should be built up incrementally, or whether a 'grand stroke' would be more effective in establishing it. The sixth section takes up three related issues: the...

A Global Game with Strategic Substitutes and Complements AgEcon
Karp, Larry S.; Lee, In Ho; Mason, Robin.
We study a global game in which actions are strategic complements over some region and strategic substitutes over another region. An agent’s payoff depends on a market fundamental and the actions of other agents. If the degree of congestion is sufficiently large, agents’ strategies are non-monotonic in their signal about the market fundamental. In this case, a signal that makes them believe that the market fundamental is more favorable for an action may make them less likely to take the action, because of the risk of overcrowding.

A graphical analysis of the functioning of tariff rate quotas: market access and welfare effects for exporting countries AgEcon
Laroche Dupraz, Catherine; Matthews, Alan.
This paper analyses the economics of tariff rate quotas assuming a large importing country and several different suppliers with differing levels of competitiveness. Eleven theoretical situations are distinguished according to the way the quota is allocated to exporters, the level of constraint imposed by the quota and the relative competitiveness of export suppliers. A graphical analysis is developed and the effects of tariff rate quotas on market access and welfare gains for exporters are discussed in the eleven cases.

A GRAPHICAL EXPOSITION OF THE GTAP MODEL AgEcon
Brockmeier, Martina.
This paper offers a graphical exposition of the GTAP model of global trade. Particular emphasis is placed on the accounting, or equilibrium, relationships in the model. It begins with a treatment of the a one region version of GTAP, thereafter adding a rest of world region to highlight the treatment of trade flows in the model. The implementation of policy instruments in GTAP is also explored, using simple supply-demand graphics. The material provided in this paper was first developed as an introduction to GTAP for participants taking the annual short course. Based on its success in that venue, this paper has been placed on the "highly recommended" reading list for individuals seeking an introduction and overview of the GTAP framework. This paper offers...

Pozitív reziduális hatás csupán a...

Kozak, Janos.
A világ májtermelésének növekedése azt jelzi, hogy e különleges termék fogyasztása iránti igény várhatóan hosszabb távon fennmarad. A termelés szerkezetében azonban átrendeződés várható az olcsóbb hízott kacsamáj javára. Ugyanakkor a libamáj a hízottmáj-termékcsoportban csúcsminőség marad. Magyarország, mivel Franciaország után a legnagyobb májtermelő ország, továbbra is mindkét termék előállításában érdekelt lesz. Hazánk már évtizedek óta a világ vezető libamájtermelő országa, de a jövőben új piaci versenytársak (pl. Kína) megjelenésére is számíthat a világ májkereskedelmében. Emellett más országok növekvő kacsamájtermelése is egyre nehezebbé teszi a magyarországi májtermékek külpiaci értékesítését. Mivel a jelenlegi gyakorlattól eltérő módon hízott májat...

A Household Level Analysis of Food Expenditure Patterns in Urban China: 1995-2000 AgEcon
Aguero, Jorge M.; Gould, Brian W..
With China's admission into the WTO, there is the potential for dramatic increases in U.S. agricultural exports to China. As China's economy continues to develop, there is general consensus that there will be an associated change in the population's diet. Currently, dairy products account for a small proportion of total food consumed, but that has been increasing in importance over the last two decades. As Chinese markets become more open to U.S. food products, it is important that U.S. manufacturers and traders obtain a better understanding of the determinants of food expenditures in China. This paper addresses the question of how changes in household income may impact food demand in general and dairy products in particular.

A JAPÁN GAZDASÁG NÉHÁNY JELLEGZETESSÉGE A XXI. SZÁZAD FORDULÓJÁN AgEcon
Tompe, Ferenc.
Ezek a jelenségek újból felkeltették a szakemberek érdeklődését a japán gazdaság iránt, egyfelől az előállt helyzet okainak feltárására, másfelől a megol-dások keresésére.

A JOINT TEST OF PRICING-TO-MARKET, MENU COST AND CURRENCY INVOICING AgEcon
Gervais, Jean-Philippe; Larue, Bruno.
This paper investigates PTM behaviour and currency invoicing decisions of Canadian pork exporters in the presence of menu costs. It is shown that when export prices are negotiated in the exporter'’s currency, menu costs cause threshold effects in the sense that there are bounds within (outside of) which PTM is not (is) observed. Conversely, PTM is not interrupted by menu costs when export prices are denominated in the importer'’s currency. The empirical model focuses on pork meat exports from Canada to the U.S. and Japan. Hansen’'s (2000) threshold estimation procedure is used to jointly test for currency invoicing and PTM in the presence of menu costs. Inference is conducted using bootstrap methods. PTM effects are smaller when accounting for currency...

A KÁVÉ HAZAI ÉS VILÁGPIACA AgEcon
Letenyei, Krisztina.
A kávé kereskedelme a nemzetközi tőzsdéken folyik. Amikor a kínálat meg-haladja a keresletet, túlkínálat van. Ekkor alacsony a kávé ára, a túltermelési válság jelei mutatkoznak: elégetik a kávét. A kistermelők a tönk szélére kerül-nek. Ekkor a kávéárak a magasba szöknek. Ebben az időszakban...

A Long Memory Conditional Variance Model for International Grain Markets AgEcon
Jin, Hyun Joung.
The study explores a long memory conditional volatility model on international grain markets, demonstrating importance of modeling both temporal effects of volatility and long memory process. This study adopts six different volatility models, nested in an ARMA(p,q)- FIGARCH(P,D,Q), to capture dependence of grain cash price volatility and compares the performance of the six models. It also visits a related question about non-normal behaviors of grain prices and adopts the student-t density intended to account for fat-tailed properties of the data. We find suitability of the FIGARCH type models under the student-t distribution and competitiveness of the parsimonious FIGARCH(1,d,0) for modeling long memory volatility.
