Schulze, Eberhard; Tillack, Peter; Gerasin, Sergej.
Discussion Paper 32 contains information on property relations and profitability of 100 Russian large-scale farm enterprises, gathered in interviews in the Volgograd region in 2000. They are an integrated part of research activities concerning the privatisation and restructuring of farm enterprises in Central and Eastern Europe and take up the subject of Discussion Paper 18. 31 questions were formulated. The answers were evaluated using multivariate statistical methods. Comprehensive knowledge was obtained about number and size of land and capital shares, voting mode, indebtedness, cost of social security contributions for the employees and of the support for household plots and ensuing consequences for the profitability of enterprises. PROFIT CONSISTENCY AND MANAGEMENT CHARACTERISTICS FOR SUCCESSFUL NORTH DAKOTA FARMS, 1995-2000 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W.; Swenson, Andrew L..
Farm profitability varies widely among producers, but the reasons for those differences are not clear as it is generally not known if the same farms are in the higher profit categories every year. Characteristics of the individual producer also vary substantially. Farm size, crop yields, cost of production, debt structure, and land ownership are some of the traits which differ among farms. This study analyzed farm finance data from the North Dakota Farm and Ranch Business Management Program over the years 1996-2000 to determine if the characteristics of profitable farms were different from the characteristics of farms which were not as profitable. A secondary objective was to evaluate if farms remained in similar profit quartiles every year.

Evaluation of the Efficiency of Agricultural Holdings in View of Structural Changes in Estonia AgEcon
Matveev, Eduard.
This presentation provides comparative analysis of agricultural holdings in Estonia based on the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data. The FADN data for reference years 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 have been analysed. The FADN data analyses showed, that there are very big differences in the structure of the agricultural holdings. Individual farms represent ca 92% of the total population of agricultural producers but at the same time their part in total production attains less than 50% according to the FADN data for year 2003.

The Issue of Land Ownership and Rural Nationalism in the East Central European/ECE/Countries. A Case Study of Hungary AgEcon
Burger, Anna.
Land has had a crucial role in the rural-nationalist ideology, especially with respect to its scarcity. In this ideology the land itself embodies a symbolic meaning which could be referred to as the "national mother-earth" which must be protected from aliens. This was the reason why the governments of the ECE candidate countries asked and received a period of 7-12 years exemption from EU rules with respect to the free movement of capital for the purpose of purchasing agricultural land.

Role of state administration in updating land-estate and farm-size conditions AgEcon
Fekete-Farkas, Maria; Molnar, Jozsef; Szucs, Istvan.
The structure of land estates and farm-sizes are the basis of a competitive agricultural production, hence these questions belong to the evergreen themes both of theory and practice also on international level. In Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs), the change of political and economic regime virtually tore into the agriculture in beginning of 1990s, destroying the existing structure of land estates by the privatization, restitutions or restoration of ownership rights resulting in fragmentation of land ownership. Over the past 10-15 years this situation has not undergone any fundamental changes. Due to economic and political situation in the transition countries market forces can not function as primary engine for land consolidation. For that...

The Biofuel Debate – Status Quo and Research Needs to Meet Multiple Goals of Food, Fuel and Ecosystem Services in the Tropics and Subtropics JARTS
Buerkert, Andreas; Schlecht, Eva.
The current biofuel debate is characterized by concerns about the environmental effects of large-scale biofuel plantations, controversies about GMO-based feedstocks and the recent global food crisis. Predictions for the development of the biofuel sector are either departing from the supply-side or the demand-side, but are mostly based on modelling efforts with an unclear experimental basis and only broadly defined economic settings. Results vary widely and tend to undervalue technical progress in processing efficiency or management-related increases in biomass yields. Moreover, calculations often neglect the impact of climate change, the need for irrigation and processing water, for soil fertility maintenance and the importance of socio-economic issues....

Potential links between rural tourism and agriculture in the Northern Great Plain Region AgEcon
Szabo, Bernadett; Posta, Laszlo.
Agriculture has played and still plays a significant role in the life of rural communities and in rural development. But, because agriculture yields low revenues, agricultural workers often need a source of additional income. Agriculture combines excellently with the growing of medicinal herbs, organic farming, handicrafts and tourism. Rural tourism, as originally conceived, is a source of revenue to supplement income from agriculture. In Hungary, however, the ties between these two activities are very weak. Our current research is focused on assessing the willingness of land owners and agricultural entrepreneurs in the Northern Great Plain region to engage in rural tourism, as well as the willingness of rural hosts to start agricultural activities....

The main issues of land consolidation in Hungary, with special regard to the voluntary exchange of lands AgEcon
Alvincz, Jozsef; Kacz, Karoly; Koltai, Judit Petra.
Land ownership and company structure is much more stabile in the agriculture of West- European countries than in Hungary. Therefore the lack of established land policy, land consolidation and farm regulation play the key role on the Hungarian agriculture’s ”map of problems”. These are strongly correlated and tasks urgently to be solved. These measures could help to raise the international competitiveness of Hungarian agriculture, positively influence the population supporting and keeping ability of the agricultural sector, and enable an environmentally sound management. The question of land consolidation – considering the legal possibilities regarding the voluntary exchange of lands – has not moved from standstill since the birth of the Land Act 14 years...

Kié lesz a föld? AgEcon
Csete, Laszlo; Barcza, Gabriella.
