Design of waste stabilization ponds for dairy processing plants in Uganda CIGR Journal

Waste stabilization ponds (WSP) were designed to treat 287.5 m3 day-1 of wastewater generated from processing of 100 m3 of milk per day.  The design involved use of existing models including those developed by Mara to size the anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds.  The design temperature was 250C.  The anaerobic pond was designed based on volumetric organic loading rate while facultative pond was designed based on surface loading rate.  On the other hand, the maturation pond was designed based on the number of coliform bacteria removed per 100 mL of wastewater.  The anaerobic pond was designed to remove 70% BOD, facultative pond-75% and maturation pond-25% BOD.  In addition, the maturation pond was designed to have a coliform bacteria removal...

Aspects of reproduction of Rineloricaria latirostris Boulenger, 1899 of Passa Cinco river (Ipeúna, São Paulo) were investigated during 18 months. The spawing period was determined by the analysis of the maturation curve, based of the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index and condition factor. The size and age on the maturation and fecundity were also determined. The fecundity was realted to some parameters such as total length and total weight.

The study of sexual maturation and spawning in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is part of a vast research programme that endeavours to understand the causes of mortality that occur sporadically during the spring and summer seasons in the Marennes-Oléron Bay. Thermal and diet conditioning were used to obtain oysters at each stage of maturity simultaneously. Using the measured rates of clearance, consumption, absorption and respiration provided estimates of growth potential and gave the energetic budget of oysters at different stages of sexual maturity. The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. Frutos de quiabeiro (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench.)cv. Amarelinho, colhidos aos 35, 45 e 55 dias apos a antese, foram divididos e submetidos aos seguintes tratamentos: em metade das porcoes as sementes foram extraidas e postas a secar em ambiente natural de laboratorio e em camara seca; na outra metade, as sementes permaneceram nos frutos e foram secas nas mesmas condicoes anteriores. O teor de agua das sementes foi determinado logo apos as colheitas e antes da realizacao do teste de germinacao, feito quando as sementes encontravam-se secas e em equilibrio com os ambientes. A cv. Red Globe nas condicoes do Vale do Sao Francisco apresenta, frequentemente, coloracao fraca e desuniforme, e sabor neutro e inexpressivo. Com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos do anelamento e do ethephon sobre a maturacao e qualidade da uva, foi conduzido experimento em Petrolina, PE, na Fazenda Boa Esperanca e no Campo Experimental de Bebedouro durante dois ciclos de producao. Os tratamentos foram os seguintes: 1) testemunha; 2) anelamento; 3) ethephon 500 ugL-1. Effect of Californian Red Worm (Eisenia foetida) on the Nutrient Dynamics of a Mixture of Semicomposted Materials Chilean J. Agric. Res.

The efficiency of composting processes with and without the addition of Californian red worms (Eisenia foetida) was evaluated, using manure of dairy cows to generate organic fertilizer. Several parameters were assessed as physio-chemical indicators of maturity, such as temperature, pH, C/N ratio, phytotoxicity and macro and micronutrients at 25 and 54 ws (mature and stored products, respectively). A linear model was used in the statistical analysis, with four replicates that included as fixed effects, the composting systems and time. Effect of harvesting time on seed physiological quality, chemical composition and storability of soybeans Scientia Agricola

Soybeans IAC-8 were harvested in the growth stages R7 and R8 commercial harvesting time and at two other subsequent times to compare their physiological and technological characteristics. Seeds were stored at two moisture levels, 12% and 15%, for 6 months. Germination and vigor (acelerated aging, electrical conductivity), oil and free fatty acids, peroxide and iodine values were evaluated periodically. As expected, the time of harvesting and seed moisture content affected seed performance, while oil content did not correlate to physiological quality as did acidity, peroxide value and iodine number.

Sperm characteristics of scallops have not been well described in the scientific literature. The effects of sperm release technique (thermal shock versus serotonin injection), of sperm collection technique (testis sampling versus serotonin injection), of sperm sampling location along the genital tract, of in vitro sperm maturation, and of time post activation on scallop sperm characteristics were assessed in the present work. Effect of seed maturation stages on physical properties and antioxidant activity in flaxseed ( Linum usitatissimum L.) Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.

Abstract The changes in flaxseed constituents at different stages of maturity are reported. The physical properties and antioxidant activity of flaxseed oil during flaxseed development have been evaluated. Continuous decrease in total polyphenol content during flaxseed development. All the results showed no significant differences between HPLC-MS and TLC for quantitative determination of phospholipids classes. The fatty acid compositions of individual phospholipids were also reported. The antioxidant activity of oilseed was assessed by means of 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. The test demonstrated that the antioxidant activity of the flaxseed oil was found to be harvesting time-dependant.

Abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) participate in the propagation of plants by somatic embryogenesis, causing polar structural differentiation of the embryo. The goal of the assay was to compare endogenous levels of ABA and IAA between somatic embryos (SE) and zygotic embryos (ZE) of Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. & Endl.) Oerst. In this study, a somatic embryo maturation assay involving the addition of varying concentrations of exogenous ABA was performed on cotyledonary-stage of N. alpina.
