Introduction: Measuring the chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a way of determining the organic matter in water based on its oxidisibility by bichromate. The presence of organic matter in sea water is one of the factors that determines the productivity of the oceans: whether this organic matter will be absorbed directly or must first be transformed into nutritive substances by bacteria. This beneficial action also has its limits. On the one hand, consumption of organic matter remains limited; when it exceeds a certain rate, there is no longer any increase in productivity. O Pantanal da Nhecolândia é caracterizado por uma elevada diversidade de unidades de vegetação que apresentam diferenças na fertilidade do solo. The étang de Berre, near Marseilles (France), is an inland brackish basin with a high primary rate of production. In 1966, the diversion of the Durance River introduced important hydrological changes. A study of organic matter mineralization and ionie exchanges at the water-sediment interface has made it possible to distinguish two areas, according to the composition of organic matter, mineralization mechanism and ionie transfers. In the North, the high rate of mineral sedimentation leads to a low content of organic matter in the sediment. Monomethylmercury behaviour in sediments collected from a mercury-contaminated lagoon IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Surface sediments and sediment cores were collected in a mercury (Hg)- contaminated lagoon, namely Largo do Laranjo – Ria de Aveiro, Portugal and analysed in order to establish the monomethylmercury (MeHg) behaviour in this kind of environment. In surface sediments, this compound was only detected in one place (13.2 ng g-1 (dry weight)). In this site, it was determined one of the lowest redox potentials (22 mV), indicative of oxic/anoxic conditions, which favours Hg methylation by enhancing the sulphate-reducing bacteria activity. However, the MeHg percentage obtained was low, namely less than 0.1% of the total Hg. ABSTRACT: Root dynamic is an important component of agricultural e natural ecosystems. The minirhizotrons system is a multicomponent assembly used to study root dynamics in a nondestructive manner. Basically, transparent tubes are installed in the soil and the root intersections along the tube are recorded and measured with appropriated software's. In this review, the minirhizotron method was discussed based in the international literature. The potential, applications and limitations of this tool, and future uses in the Cerrado region was also discussed.

On the need for independently estimating organic tripton carbon content OMA

A method is described by which the contribution of Non-Living Particulate Organic Matter (NLPOM) to Total Organic Matter can be determined. The dye Trypan Blue stains only dead organic matter. The surface of the stained particles is used as an indirect measure of the NLPOM-carbon content. Applying this method, it is shown that the bivariate linear regression of POM on chlorophyll <i>a</i> may produce serious errors in the calculated NLPOM contribution when carbon which is neither tripton- nor chlorophyll-related is present in appreciable quantities.

Organic carbon accumulation in modern sediments of the Angola basin influenced by the Congo deep sea fan ArchiMer

Geochemical data (total organic carbon-TOC content, δ13Corg, C:N, Rock-Eval analyses) were obtained on 150 core tops from the Angola basin, with a special focus on the Congo deep sea fan. Combined with the previously published data, the resulting dataset (322 stations) shows a good spatial and bathymetric representativeness. TOC content and δ13Corg maps of the Angola basin were generated using this enhanced dataset. The main difference in our map with previously published ones is the high terrestrial organic matter content observed downslope along the active turbidite channel of the Congo deep sea fan till the distal lobe complex near 5,000 m of water-depth. The rate of organic matter decomposition and the structure of the communities of microarthropods were compared between two corn fields receiving cantrasting agricultural management practices (low input and intensive farming). The rate of decomposition tended to be higher in the intensively managed field in the beginning of the growing season, but decreased to a level significantly lower than the observed in the low input field by the end of the growing season. This suggested that the biological community associated with the decomposition process could be negatively influenced in the intensively managed field. This study investigates how termites alter the organic matter in rain forests near Manaus, Brazil. Samples were collected from the outer and inner parts of typical termite nests of Nasutitermes, Termes, Embiratermes, Cornitermes, Anoplotermes, and Constrictotermes genera, as well as from the surrounding topsoil (0cm-10cm) and potential wooden food. The termite nests were signficant sinks for organic matter and its associated nutrients. The organic C contents ranged between 100g kg-1 and 500g kg-1 in the nests, compared to 17g kg-1 to 42g kg-1 in the surrounding topsoils.
