Exposure to the Paralytic Shellfish Toxin Producer Alexandrium catenella Increases the Susceptibility of the Oyster Crassostrea gigas to Pathogenic Vibrios ArchiMer

The multifactorial etiology of massive Crassostrea gigas summer mortalities results from complex interactions between oysters, opportunistic pathogens and environmental factors. In a field survey conducted in 2014 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (France), we evidenced that the development of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), was concomitant with the accumulation of PSTs in oyster flesh and the occurrence of C. gigas mortalities. Antimicrobial effect of polyphenols from apple skins on human bacterial pathogens Electron. J. Biotechnol.

Apples possess many beneficial properties for the human health related with their high content in phenolic compounds. The antimicrobial effect of these compounds from the skin of two apple varieties, Royal Gala and Granny Smith, against human pathogens was examined. The phenolic compounds were extracted with the following solvents: A, acetone: water: acetic acid; B, ethyl acetate: methanol: water and C, ethanol: water. Total phenolic, flavonoid and non-flavonoid contents were analyzed in the extracts. The antimicrobial effect was determined using the agar diffusion method. The degradation in the quality of silver eel and their health could have been a major factor in the collapse of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population. However, the health status of the spawners has been poorly studied until now. This study evaluated the quality of migrant male silver eels from four Mediterranean habitats in France presenting different degrees of contamination: Canet-Saint-Nazaire, Salses-Leucate and Bages-Sigean lagoons and La Berre River. Dans cette étude comparative, deux méthodes d'extraction de quatre types de virus entériques pathogènes pour l’homme (virus de l’hépatite A, l’astrovirus, le norovirus et l’entérovirus) contaminant des moules (Mytilus galloprovincialis) et des palourdes (Ruditapes decussatus) ont été évaluées par l’application de la technique « Perverse Transcriptase- Polymerase Chain Reaction : RT-PCR ». O eucalipto é o segundo gênero florestal mais plantado na região Sul do Brasil, para a produção de celulose, papel e energia. A expansão contínua dos plantios comerciais de eucalipto na região Sul do Brasil tem levado ao aumento na incidência e severidade de doenças. O presente trabalho discute a ocorrência e a distribuição de doenças do eucalipto nessa região, as espécies suscetíveis e os agentes causais. Estratégias de controle como o mapeamento de áreas de risco, o uso de material genético resistente e o controle químico são medidas adequadas para minimizar os impactos negativos na produção de madeira para energia. Strategy of researches on marine bivalve defense mechanisms ArchiMer

Because of the impact of infectious diseases in marine mollusc aquaculture, research has been initially developed in pathology in term of epidemiology and diagnosis. The establishment of basic techniques for in vitro and in vivo studies of host/pathogen interactions and the progresses in the field of cellular and molecular biology have permitted to undertake researches in immunology. Parallel to fundamental interest in understanding defense mecanisms of molluscs against pathogens, applications may be expected for resistant strains obtained by genetic engineering.

Pacific oysters were introduced into west coast of the USA from Matsushima Bay in Japan, infected with low levels of Haplosporidiumsp. identical to H.nelsoni(MSX) which causes high mortalities of Eastern oyster (C. virginica). A highly specific and sensitive DNA probe for H. nelsonican also detect Haplosporidium sp. in C.gigas of western US and Japan (Burreson and Stokes 2000).In 2002, H. nelsoni was detected in Japan using the same probe (Kamaishi and Yoshinaga 2002).Lesson: it appears that H. nelsoni does not cause serious disease in Pacific oysters; H. nelsoniis now speculated to have been introduced into the Pacific US by apparently healthy but infected C. gigas. The chief importance of hemocytes as immune effectors in molluscs has led to develop researches for in vitro culture. The chemiluminescence technique has been used to estimate the phagocytosis capacity of Crassostrea gigas hemocytes according to different culture media and times. Sea water was used as a basic medium. Additives, such as antibiotics or glucose and buffers, such as Tris or Hepes, were tested as weIl as artificial sea water. Characterization of race 65 of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum by sequencing ITS regions Agronomy

The present work aimed characterize isolates of C. lindemuthianum race 65 from different regions in Brazil by ITS sequencing. A total of 17 isolates of race 65, collected in the states of Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Santa Catarina and São Paulo, were studied. Analysis of the sequences of isolates 8, 9, 12, 14 and 15 revealed the presence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ITS1 region at the same positions. These isolates, when analyzed together with the sequence of isolate 17, revealed a SNP in the ITS2 region. The highest genetic dissimilarity, observed between isolates 11 and  3 and between isolates 11 and 10, was 0.772. Em casa-de-vegetacao, realizou-se teste de eficiencia agronomica de produtos quimicos, selecionados em testes ?n vitro", e de um produto biologico, Trichoderma spp., na inibicao da antracnose ou mal-de-sete-voltas da cebola. Utilizou-se a cultivar Texas -, Early Grano 502, suscetivel a doenca e uma das mais cultivadas na regiao ceboleira do Vale do Sao Francisco. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com 18 tratamentos, sendo duas testemunhas, recebendo duas tecnicas de aplicacao dos produtos (A -antes da inoculacao do patogeno, B -depois da inoculacao do patogeno) e tres repeticoes com seis plantas cada.
