Amilhat, Elsa; Fazio, Geraldine; Simon, Gael; Manetti, Marc; Paris, Severine; Delahaut, Laurence; Farrugio, Henri; Lecomte-finiger, Raymonde; Sasal, Pierre; Faliex, Elisabeth.
The degradation in the quality of silver eel and their health could have been a major factor in the collapse of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population. However, the health status of the spawners has been poorly studied until now. This study evaluated the quality of migrant male silver eels from four Mediterranean habitats in France presenting different degrees of contamination: Canet-Saint-Nazaire, Salses-Leucate and Bages-Sigean lagoons and La Berre River. We considered pathogens including Anguillicoloides crassus and EVEX virus and the concentration of chemical contaminants including PCBs, OCs and heavy metals. Our study results revealed different patterns of pollution and infection in the four habitats, with high individual variability. No...

Cross-kingdom similarities in microbiome ecology and biocontrol of pathogens. Repositório Alice
BERG, G.; KRAUSE, R.; MENDES, R..
Abstract: The concept of "gut and root microbiota commonalities" was already presented by Ramírez-Puebla et al.(2013); they discussed a lot of similar functional traits, host-bacteria interactions as well as evolutionary trends but also several differences. Based on deeper insights obtained by omics technologies, Mendes and Raaijmakers (2015) recently presented their concept that the structure and function of rhizosphere and gut microbiomes showcross-kingdom similarities. In parallel, Hacquard et al. (2015) analyzed similarities of the microbiota composition across plant and animal kingdoms and found only little overlap comparing fish gut and plant root communities. They explained the differences by various start inoculants and abiotic, niche-specific...

Coelho, Marcela; Gonçalves-Vidigal, Maria Celeste; Sousa, Lorenna Lopes de; Nunes, Maria Paula Barion Alves; Azevedo, Rafhael Felipin; Galván, Marta Zulema.
The present work aimed characterize isolates of C. lindemuthianum race 65 from different regions in Brazil by ITS sequencing. A total of 17 isolates of race 65, collected in the states of Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Santa Catarina and São Paulo, were studied. Analysis of the sequences of isolates 8, 9, 12, 14 and 15 revealed the presence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ITS1 region at the same positions. These isolates, when analyzed together with the sequence of isolate 17, revealed a SNP in the ITS2 region. The highest genetic dissimilarity, observed between isolates 11 and  3 and between isolates 11 and 10, was 0.772. In turn, isolates 7 and 2 were the most similar, with a value of 0.002 for genetic distance. The phylogenetic...

It is extremely important for biodiversity conservation that protected areas are resilient to a range of potential future perturbations. One of the least studied influences on protected area resilience is that of disease. We argue that wildlife disease (1) is a social-ecological problem that must be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective; (2) has the potential to lead to changes in the identity of protected areas, possibly transforming them; and (3) interacts with conservation both directly (via impacts on wild animals, livestock, and people) and indirectly (via the public, conservation management, and veterinary responses). We use southern African protected areas as a case study to test a framework for exploring the connections between...

Exposure to the Paralytic Shellfish Toxin Producer Alexandrium catenella Increases the Susceptibility of the Oyster Crassostrea gigas to Pathogenic Vibrios ArchiMer
Abi-khalil, Celina; Lopez-joven, Carmen; Abadie, Eric; Savar, Veronique; Amzil, Zouher; Laabir, Mohamed; Rolland, Jean-luc.
The multifactorial etiology of massive Crassostrea gigas summer mortalities results from complex interactions between oysters, opportunistic pathogens and environmental factors. In a field survey conducted in 2014 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (France), we evidenced that the development of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), was concomitant with the accumulation of PSTs in oyster flesh and the occurrence of C. gigas mortalities. In order to investigate the possible role of toxic algae in this complex disease, we experimentally infected C. gigas oyster juveniles with Vibrio tasmaniensis strain LGP32, a strain associated with oyster summer mortalities, after oysters were exposed to Alexandrium...

Microbiological safety aspects of mangoes (Mangifera indica) and papayas (Carica papaya): a mini-review. Repositório Alice
PENTEADO, A. L..
Abstract: This review describes several aspects related to microbiological safety in mangoes and papayas, such as incidence, outbreaks, internalisation and growth/survival of bacterial pathogens. Mangoes and papayas are often served sliced in food establishments in fresh pieces at salad bars, deli counters and as pulp juice. In general, these products do not undergo any process to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms before consumption, and a long shelf life could theoretically provide time for these microorganisms to multiply without affecting the organoleptic qualities of the fruit, thereby increasing the risks of food-borne illness. The data presented in this review show that low temperatures can impede microbial growth, but not completely inhibit such...

Molecular characterization of the recombinant protein RmLTI-BmCG-LTB: Protective immunity against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Repositório Alice
CSORDAS, B. G.; CUNHA, R. C.; GARCIA, M. V.; SILBA, S. da S.; LEITE, F. L.; ANDREOTTI, R..
The bovine tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is found in several tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This parasite transmits pathogens that cause disease, such as babesiosis ( Babesia bovis and B . bigemina ) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale). Tick infestations cause enormous livestock losses, and controlling tick infestations and the transmission of tick-borne diseases remains a challenge for the livestock industry. Because the currently available commercial vaccines offer only partial protection against R. (B.) microplus, there is a need for more efficient vaccines. Several recombinant antigens have been evaluated using different immunization strategies, and they show great promise. This work describes the construction and...
