Fluctuations à long terme du thon rouge: validité, origines et conséquences ArchiMer
Ravier, Christelle.
Describe and gain understanding on fluctuations in animal population over time and space is a central goal of population ecology. This is also crucial to ensure the sustainable management of exploited resources, particularly those with complex population dynamics such as the bluefin tuna. The goal of this work is to collect bluefin tuna catches from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fisheries to (i) characterise long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna population migrating in the Mediterranean, (ii) analyse their causes et (iii) assess their implications for fisheries management. The bluefin tuna main biological and ecological characteristics are first detailed. Then, the first part presents the trap fishery, and the process of collect and...

Flutuação populacional de Rhynchophorus palmarum e a associação com o Bursaphelenchus cocophilus em dendezeiro no Estado do Amazonas. Repositório Alice
ARAÚJO, J. C. A.; ARAÚJO, A. E.; SANTOS, A. F..

Gonçalves,Paulo A. S..
The population dynamics of Thrips tabaci Lind. was evaluated for onion (Allium cepa) planted in July, August and September at the Ituporanga Experimental Station, EPAGRI S.A., Santa Catarina State, Brazil, from 1985 to 1988. For each planting date cv. Baia Periforme, Jubileu, EMPASC 351 Sel. Crioula and Norte 14 were used. Severe infestation in all cultivars was observed after mid-October. The population peak of T. tabaci occurred between the end of October and mid-November. Cultivars transplanted early tended to escape from high population densities. Populations of T. tabaci peaked during bulb formation and decreased thereafter.

Food limitation and low-density populations of sympatric hamster species in North China Naturalis
Xiong, W.; Liang, H.; Yu, X.; Cong, L.; Zhang, Z..
Although food has been proposed as a possible factor on population regulation of small mammals, evidence of food restriction in field conditions is still lacking. Food restriction is generally thought to occur in high-density years of oscillating populations of small mammals. By using two body condition indices (muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index), we investigated variations of body condition of the greater long-tailed hamster (Tscherskia triton) and the striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) in the Raoyang County of the North China Plain during a population decline- and low-phase from 1998 to 2003. Our laboratory experiments showed that food restriction reduced muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index of greater...

Genetic structure of Bertholletia excelsa populations from the Amazon at different spatial scales. Repositório Alice
SUJII, P. S.; MARTINS, K.; WADT, L. H. de O.; AZEVEDO, V. C. R.; SOLFERINI, V. N..
Population genetic structure and genetic diversity levels are important issues to understand population dynamics and to guide forest management plans. The Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa Bonpl.) is an endemic species, widely distributed through Amazonian upland forests and also an important species for the local extractive economy. Our aim was to analyze the genetic structure of Brazil nut trees at both fine and large scales throughout the Amazon Basin, contributing to the knowledge base on this species and to generate information to support plans for its conservation. We genotyped individuals from nine sites distributed in five regions of the Brazilian Amazon using 11 microsatellite loci. We found an excess of heterozygotes in most populations, with...

Geographic variability of sardine dynamics in the Iberian Biscay region ArchiMer
Silva, A.; Skagen, D. W.; Uriarte, A.; Masse, Jacques; Santos, M. B.; Marques, V.; Carrera, P.; Beillois, Pierre; Pestana, G.; Porteiro, C.; Stratoudakis, Y..
The spatio-temporal variability in the distribution, demographic structure, recruitment, and mortality of sardine within the Iberian Biscay region is described using area-disaggregated data collected during acoustic surveys and at ports since the mid-1980s. Multiple regression models were used to describe log numbers-at-age obtained annually in ten areas covered by three surveys to test the existence of geographic differences in selectivity-at-age, recruitment strength, and mortality and to infer plausible migration routes. Within Iberian waters, sardine biomass was mainly concentrated off western Portugal and the Gulf of Cadiz. In the Bay of Biscay, biomass levels were comparable with those off western Portugal. Recruitment was localized in a few areas...

Grasshopper Population Ecology: Catastrophe, Criticality, and Critique Ecology and Society
Lockwood, Dale R; Colorado State University; dale.lockwood@colostate.edu; Lockwood, Jeffrey A; University of Wyoming;.
Grasshopper population dynamics are an important part of the North American rangeland ecosystem and an important factor in the economies that derive from the rangeland. Outbreak dynamics have plagued management strategies in the rangeland, and attempts to find simple, linear and mechanistic solutions to both understanding and predicting the dynamics have proved fruitless. These efforts to ground theory in a correspondence with the “real” world, including whether the population dynamics are ultimately density dependent or density independent, have generated abundant heat but little light. We suggest that a pragmatic approach, in which theories are taken to be “tools” rather than competing claims of truth, has greater...

Historia de vida y dinámica de poblaciones de Lychnorhiza lucerna (Scyphozoa) ¿Un recurso pesquero alternativo? OceanDocs
Schiariti, A..
In this Thesis we presented the first steps in the study of the life history and population dynamics of Lychnorhiza lucerna as well as the possibilities of development of its fishery in Argentina. L. lucerna presented a metagenetic life cycle characteristic of most scyphozoans. Polyps reproduced asexually by the production of podocysts and polidisk strobilation. The combination of both types of asexual reproduction resulted in a high strobilation rates indicating that the abundance of medusae would strongly depend on polyps abundance and reproduction. The absence of ephyrae in the Río de la Plata estuary suggest that L. lucerna doest not complete its life cycle locally but medusae would be produced by polyps located northwards along the Uruguayan or...

Iheringichthys labrosus (Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) in the Piquiri River, Paraná, Brazil: population structure and some aspects of its reproductive biology Neotropical Ichthyology
Holzbach,Arlei J.; Gubiani,Éder A.; Baumgartner,Gilmar.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the population structure (spatial and temporal distribution, sex ratio, length distribution and length/weight relationship) and reproductive biology of Iheringichthys labrosus. This species is of importance as fisheries resource in the Paraná River basin. Fish were sampled, bimonthly, with gill and trammel nets at three sampling sites (Campina, Apertado and Altônia), located in the Piquiri River, between November 2002 and September 2003. In this study, 164 individuals were collected; the largest capture occurred in Campina site, with 209.88 individuals/1000 m² of net for 24 hours, while the shift of largest capture was night time (N) and the month was July. Females occurred in larger numbers than males in all...

Impact de l'érosion côtière et éléments d'étude de vulnérabilité : example du Togo (Golfe de Guinée) OceanDocs
Blivi, A.B..

Impact of the reproduction dynamics on genetic variation in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Taris, Nicolas; Lallias, Delphine; Bonhomme, Francois; Boudry, Pierre.
The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) is a marine bivalve whose natural geographical distribution ranges along the European Atlantic coast from Norway to Morocco, in addition to the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The latest results obtained on the genetic differentiation between these populations have led us to pursue studies at a finer scale, in order to estimate the effective number of breeders and the temporal dynamics of reproduction and, more specially, recruitment. Several experiments were performed to document (1) the variance in allele frequencies during a natural settlement period; (2) the paternal contribution to fertilization by analyzing larvae sampled at the brooding stage within individual females; (3) the variance of individual...

Influence of rainfall on mite distribution in organic and conventional coffee systems. Repositório Alice
PEDRO NETO, M.; REIS, P. R.; ZACARIAS, M. S.; SILVA, R. A..
Climate changes, such as temperature rise, prolonged drought and heavy rainfall, impair human activities, especially the food production sector. Rainfall is one of the most important natural, life-sustaining factors on the planet and it is essential in agriculture, not only to water plants, but also in regulating pest organisms in crops through mechanical control. The mites Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes, 1939) and Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor, 1917) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae, Tetranychidae) are important coffee pests influenced by the rainfall regime. The aim of this work was to study the distribution of coffee predatory (Phytoseiidae family) and phytophagous (B. phoenicis and O. ilicis) mites in function of rainfall, between June/2006 and June/2008, in...

Introduced herbivores and the Allee effect in animal-pollinated plants Ecología austral
Vázquez,Diego P.
Interspecific interactions can be modulated by the community context in which they occur. In this paper I focus on plant-pollinator interactions and their modulation by introduced herbivores through changes in plant population density. I first develop a mathematical model that relates the population density of an animal-pollinated plant species with pollinator visitation frequency, pollination, reproduction and per capita growth rate. This model allows me to investigate how several pollination-related parameters -including relative abundance of the focal plant species, pollinator specialization, pollination quantity and quality and pollen limitation of reproduction- influence the relationship between per capita growth rate and population density. I then...
