The dynamics of natural populations: feedback structures in fluctuating environments RChHN
LIMA,MAURICIO.
The fluctuations exhibited by natural populations have fascinated ecologists for the last eighty years. However, a vigorous debate between different schools of population ecologists has hampered reaching a consensus about the causes of such numerical fluctuations. Recent findings and a more synthetic view of population change espoused by ecologists, statisticians, and mathematicians have integrated the role of nonlinear feedback (deterministic) and external environmental (deterministic or stochastic) processes in the dynamics of natural populations. The new challenge for population ecologists is to understand how these two different forces interact in nature. In this commentary, I review some of the basic principles of population analysis during the last...

Waterboatmen, and testing for Lotka-Volterra-type interactions OMA
Bergmans, M..
A previous paper by Istock, in which this author claims to have successfully applied the Lotka-Volterra model to his observations on corixid population dynamics, is criticised for the shortcomings in evidence cited to support the model's fit with the data. It is contended that the dynamic behaviour of the system of Hesperocorixa lobata - Sigara macropala interaction is not in accordance with the Lotka-Volterra model. ThIs brief critique is followed by comments by istock in reply to the points raised in Bergmans' letter.

In this work we compare Grapholita molesta Busck (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) populations originated from Brazil, Chile, Spain, Italy and Greece using power spectral density and phylogenetic analysis to detect any similarities between the population macro- and the molecular micro-level. Log-transformed population data were normalized and AR(p) models were developed to generate for each case population time series of equal lengths. The time-frequency/scale properties of the population data were further analyzed using wavelet analysis to detect any population dynamics frequency changes and cluster the populations. Based on the power spectral of each population time series and the hierarchical clustering schemes, populations originated from Southern America...

Weed Search and Control: Theory and Application AgEcon
Cacho, Oscar J.; Spring, Daniel; Pheloung, Paul; Hester, Susan M..
The detectability of invasive organisms influences the costs and benefits of alternative control strategies, and the feasibility of eradicating an infestation. Search theory offers a mathematically rigorous framework for defining and measuring detectability, taking account of searcher ability, biological factors and the search environment. To demonstrate the application of search theory to invasive species control, invasive species detectability is incorporated into a population simulation model. The model is applied to a base set of parameter values that represent reasonable values for a hypothetical weed. The analysis shows the effects of detectability and search time on the duration of an eradication program. Furthermore, for a given level of...

What can exploratory modelling tell us about the ecobiology of European sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ): a comprehensive overview ArchiMer
Lopez, Romain; De Pontual, Helene; Bertignac, Michel; Mahevas, Stephanie.
European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, is a highly valuable species in Europe, both for aquaculture in the Mediterranean Sea and for commercial and recreational fisheries in the North East Atlantic Ocean. Subjected to increasing fishing pressure, the wild population has recently experienced significant recruitment fluctuation as well as a northward extension of its distribution area in the North Sea. While the nature of the ecological and/or physiological processes involved remains unresolved, ontogenetic habitat shifts and adult site fidelity could increase the species’ vulnerability to climate change and overfishing. As managers look for expert information to propose management scenarios leading to sustainable exploitation, exploratory modelling...

Why the dimension matters in ecological models? RChHN
Ramos-Jiliberto,Rodrigo; Hoecker-Escuti,Francisco; Mena-Lorca,Jaime.
In this work we discuss the ecological and mathematical significance of system's dimension in continuous-time population dynamics models. We show how the system's dimension reflects the ecological assumptions and affects both the spectrum of dynamic output and mathematical tractability of the models. We stress that the model dimension is not always the same as the number of state-variables, and we also present conditions under which the system's dimension is altered

Since 2000, heavy infestations of a scale insect, Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi, have been discovered on cycad, an important ornamental plant in Taiwan. A large number of cycads were found dead in parks, schools, building grounds, and gardens, resulting from its damage. A. yasumatsui known to have a high reproductive potential and its area of damage covering the entire plant, including such plant parts as the scales of a stem and underground roots,...
