Base genética das cultivares de arroz (Oryza sativa L.) irrigado do Brasil. Repositório Alice

Foram analisadas as genealogias de 42 cultivares de arroz irrigado recomendadas para cultivo no Brasil, de 1980 a 1992. Verificou-se que apenas dez ancestrais contribuem com 68% do conjunto gênico das variedades brasileiras de arroz irrigado. Considerando as cultivares mais plantadas nos principais estados produtores de arroz irrigado, constata-se que sete ancestrais são mais frequentes nos pedigrees e são responsáveis por 70% dos genes. Diante desses dados, mesmo que se admita que esses ancestrais não estejam relacionados geneticamente, reconhece-se a necessidade de aumentar a base genética das cultivares de arroz irrigado do Brasil, para se quebrar o plato de produtividade e se evitarem riscos de vulnerabilidade genética. The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of biochar rate (0, 8, 16 and 32 Mg ha-1) on the water retention capacity (WRC) of a sandy loam Dystric Plinthosol. The applied biochar was a by-product of slow pyrolysis (~450 °C) of eucalyptus wood, milled to pass through a 2000 micrometers sieve that resulted in a material with an intrinsic porosity less than or equal to 10 micrometers and a specific surface area of ~3.2 m2 g-1. The biochar was incorporated into the top 15 cm of the soil under an aerobic rice system. Our study focused on both the effects on WRC and rice yields 2 and 3 years after its application. BIOFORTIFICATION, AN ALTERNATIVE TO REDUCE FOOD INSECURITY AND ITS ADVERSE EFFECTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: A HONDURAS CASE STUDY AgEcon

Food insecurity can generate nutritional problems such as iron deficiency anemia, which in countries like Honduras is a moderate public health problem. The AgroSalud project is enhancing the iron content of beans and rice in order to improve the iron intake of vulnerable groups, especially children under five years and pregnant women. Iron- biofortified rice and beans together can reduce the deficit in iron intake by more than a 100% depending on the age group, farmer adoption and other variables. This, in turn, would increase the number of healthy (disability-adjusted life years, DALYs) years that the Honduran population could live.

Biosurfactant are surface active compounds with emulsifying capacity and are produced by microorganisms, and they may be affected by factors related to microbial cultivation, such as pH, salinity, incubation time, carbon and nitrogen sources. The aim of this work was to study the influence of the culture conditions on the production of biosurfactants by Phialemonium sp using agroindustrial wastes. The processing parameters of temperature, humidity and pH produced the most significant effects on the production of biosurfactant and emulsifying activity. The maximum concentration of biosurfactant obtained in this study was equivalent to a surface tension reduction of 8.5 mg L-1 surfactin commercial solution using wheat bran, pH of 4.5, and 0.5% of soybean oil...

Background: Adoption of the hybrid rice varieties by farmers is often impaired by the high price of hybrid seed, due to low yields in hybrid seed production fields. Female outcrossing ability (FOA) and female hybrid seed production ability (FHSPA), defined as the rate of filled spikelets of the male sterile (MS) line and as its grain yield under outcrossing, respectively, determine plant traits for hybrid seed yield. The early-maturing irrigated rice cultivar BRS A702 CL was developed by Embrapa in partnership with BASF for the Clearfield Production System of irrigated rice in the tropical region of Brazil. In the states of Tocantins and Roraima, BRS A702 CL produces a mean yield of 7,650 kg ha-1.
