Salmonella serovars isolated from poultry material from 1994 to 1999 MV&Z
Andreatti Filho, Raphael Lúcio; Fernandes, Sueli Aparecida; Boretti, Lígia Pedroso; Barros, Mércia Rodrigues; Del Bem, Sandro Roberto; Fontana, Adriano; Sampaio, Homero Marcos; Savano, Edson Naoto.
Salmonella serovars isolated from poultry material from different geographical areas were identified in the 1994-1999 period. A total of73 serovars was isolated, with recognition of21 different serovars distributed in nine serogroups. Enteritidis was the serovar with highest incidence, 46.57%, and was isolated from feed, litter and meat, poultry byproducts and fish meal. Natum had the second highest incidence, 6.84%, and 80% of isolations were made from meat meal. S. pullorum represented 2.73% of the isolations, 100% from brown layers, confirming their susceptibility to infection by this serovar. Of the materials included in the present study, broilers and meat meal had more Salmonella spp., 41.09% and 30.13%, respectively. Among the serovars isolated from...

Salmonella spp investigation in transport boxes of day-old birds BJM
Zancan,Fábio Tavares; Berchieri Junior,Angelo; Fernandes,Sueli Aparecida; Gama,Nilce Maria Soares Queiroz.
The presence of Salmonella was investigated in transport boxes of newly hatched chicks in the moment they were received in the farms. 1,611 boxes, delivered to 15 farms (one broiler grand-parent farm, four broiler parent farms, two commercial broiler chick farms and seven laying hens farms) were tested. A total of 19 visits to these farms were done, and Salmonella was detected in ten of these visits. Salmonella Heidelberg was detected in boxes in five farms. S. Heidelberg and S. Mbandaka were simultaneously detected in one broiler breeder farm. Salmonella Enteritidis alone, S. Enteritidis and S. Mbandaka and S. Cerro alone were detected in three, one and one laying hens farms, respectively.

Salmonellosis Control: Estimated Economic Benefits AgEcon
Roberts, Tanya.
Salmonellosis, a common human intestinal disorder primarily caused by contaminated meats and poultry, attacks an estimated two million Americans annually. Using a cost of illness approach, the medical costs and productivity losses alone were estimated to cost around one billion dollars in 1987. If pain and suffering, lost leisure time, and chronic disease costs could be quantified, the estimate would increase significantly. Other procedures for calculating the value of life could either raise or lower the estimated economic benefits of reducing human salmonellosis. Incorporating losses to farmers, whose animals have reduced feed efficiency, reduced weight gain, or deaths because of chronic salmonellosis, would also increase the estimates. Also excluded...

Stability inside hen eggs of a Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis bacteriophage Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Robeson,James; Valencia,Martina; Retamales,Julio; Borie,Consuelo.
Background: Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and therefore are widespread in nature. Those that lyse the pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) should be expected in niches in which this bacterium thrives, among others the avian egg. Furthermore, bacteriophages could remain viable in this milieu. Results: Upon artificially infecting hen eggs with the SE bacteriophage f18 we found that the bacteriophage titer remains stable at least for up to 144 hrs post-infection , both in yolk and albumen at 25ºC. Conclusion: Bacteriophage f18 withstands the physico-chemical conditions of the egg inner milieu and could be considered for SE-controlling measures in the poultry industry.

Survie et maintien de la virulence de Salmonella Typhimurium VNC exposée simultanément à trois facteurs stressants expérimentaux ArchiMer
Baleux, B; Caro, A; Lesne, J; Got, P; Binard, S; Delpeuch, B.
The release of enteric pathogenic bacteria in aquatic environments poses the problem of the fate of these bacteria under the effects of environmental factors (solar radiation, salt concentration, temperature, nutrient level, pH, competition). Frequently, these bacterial cells, potentially pathogenic, enter into a non-culturable state on routine bacteriological plating media. However, the use of direct detection methods (DAPI stained cells) allows the visualization of these Viable but Non Culturable cells (VNC). But, beyond the characterization of the viability of the cells (electron transport activity, metabolic activity, membrane integrity, structure and/or quantity of DNA), what happens with the virulence of these cells? This problem was experimentally...

SWINE '95 PART II: REFERENCE OF 1995 U.S. GROWER/FINISHER HEALTH AND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AgEcon
Bush, Eric J..
This report is the second of a three-part release of national information from the second National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) swine study, the Swine '95 Grower/Finisher. The 1990 National Swine Survey focused on farrowing sows and preweaning piglets. For the Swine '95 Study, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with Veterinary Services (VS) to select a producer sample that was statistically designed to provide inferences to the nation's swine population. Data collected for the study represented the top 16 pork states and nearly 91 percent of the U.S. hog inventory, as well as nearly three fourths of the nation's pork producers. Data for this report were collected from 418 producers whose operations had 300 or...

VALUE-AT-RISK AND FOOD SAFETY LOSSES IN TURKEY PROCESSING AgEcon
Siaplay, Mounir; Nganje, William E.; Kaitibie, Simeon.
Food safety risks and microbial outbreaks have significant health impacts on society as a whole, as well as economic loss to food processing firms. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), an estimated 76 million foodborne illnesses occur each year in the United States. Of these cases, 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur each year (Mead et al., 1999). The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Services (USDA-FSIS) (1996) estimated that approximately 4,000 deaths each year are attributed to contamination in meat and poultry products. For food processing firms, microbial outbreaks often result in significant economic losses: food recalls, lost market share, and decreased consumer confidence. The intangible...
