Building Trust in Organic Organic Eprints
Huber, Beate.
What are the basics for setting up an organic certification body? How is an efficient and service-oriented certification system implemented? How should the necessary documentation be developed? These are some questions that are explained thoroughly in the completely revised IFOAM publication "Building Trust in Organic".

Bundesprogramm Ökologischer Landbau (BOEL): Zertifizierung/ Kontrolle Organic Eprints
The Federal Organic Farming Scheme (FOFS: This scheme is a temporary funding source (2002 – 2007/2008) especially to support the whole organic farming sector (incl. research) in Germany. In the summer of 2001, the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture commissioned a project team comprised of representatives from associations and science and headed by the Federal Agricultural Research Centre to develop a proposal for a package of measures to foster organic farming in Germany. A hearing of representatives from trade and industry, associations, consultancy, science and administration laid the foundation for the team's work. Based on this work, the Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture Renate Künast decided to...

CERTCOST – Economic Analysis of Certification Systems for Organic Food and Farming at EU level Organic Eprints
Dabbert, Prof. Dr. Stephan; Lippert, Dr. Christian; Schulz, Ms. Tatjana; Zorn, Mr. Alexander.
With the ongoing growth of the organic sector and the spread of organic production across the EU, the field of organic certification has become a maze of competing labels and logos. This diversity reflects the specific conditions in different regions and countries, but can also lead to confusion for producers and consumers, as well as create a variety of costs. It is imperative to conduct a comprehensive economic analysis of the variety of existing certification systems and their impact on the internal European market for organic goods. This project proposes to combine the experience and knowledge of both researchers and SMEs to analyse the implementation of organic certification systems and to estimate all relevant expenditures or transaction costs for...

Certifying Out Of Home Operators in Europe. European Forum for Certification. Organic Eprints
For the 7th consecutive year a session on organic certification of out-of-home operations was held at the BioFach in Nuremberg, February 2010. The focus on organic catering in Europe is a growing movement. A number of standards and statements are presented thus adding to the sharing of information, experiences and inspiration across borders and organisations. It is hoped that this exchange will facilitate beneficial contacts between those involved in the setting up and development of national and private catering certification standards. The mass catering sector is growing and therefore attracts increasing attention at pan‐European level; The EU regulation for organic food and farming (EC No 834/2007) which came into force on January 1st, 2009, obliges...

Cluster: Values, standards and certification Organic Eprints
The Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming (DARCOF) was established in 1995 as a so-called "centre without walls" where the actual research is performed in interdisciplinary collaboration between the participating research groups. The remit of DARCOF is to coordinate research for organic farming, with a view to achieving optimum benefit from the allocated resources. Its aim is to elucidate the ideas and problems faced in organic farming through the promotion of high quality research of international stan-dard.

Common rules for 'out of home' catering Organic Eprints
Alonso, Nuria.
Could common EU rules for organic catering be possible? Are they needed or even desired? There are several initiatives in Europe that work on the exchange of information between the different EU countries with regard to catering standards and certification, and these are setting the groundwork for a long-term harmonised regulation.

Communication of ethical activities going beyond organic standards in European organic enterprises Organic Eprints
Gössinger, Katharina; Freyer, Bernhard.
In times of rapid growth of the organic market and differentiation processes within the sector, efforts are made on different levels to (re)define and strengthen organic values. The normative part of this process is the reformulation of IFOAM-principles, which form the basis for ethical commitment within the organic movement, without being fully integrated into organic regulations. This article addresses the question of which ethical activities are practised on organic farms and by organic companies that go beyond the organic regulations (referred to as "organicPlus" in this study), with what arguments these activities are communicated to consumers and how they are related to the dimensions of sustainability. The survey encompasses 100 small and...

Comparison between two accreditation criteria: A report on the differences between the IFOAM Accreditation Criteria and ISO 65 (EN 45011) Organic Eprints
Huber, Beate.
The paper describes the results of a comparison between two accreditation criteria: the IFOAM Accreditation Criteria and ISO 65 (EN 45011. The comparison does not provide an assessment of each norm, and the format of the comparison makes it difficult to make a quick overview on the major differences. In addition, a summary and an assessment of the variations of both norms are missing. On the other hand, the comparison enables the reader to make their own assessment and as such will be a valuable tool in the discussion and negotiations about recognition of IFOAM Accreditation.

Contamination of oilseed rape varieties by pollen and seeds Organic Eprints
Simonsen, Vibeke; Damgaard, Christian; Kjellsson, Gösta.
Oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is a common crop in Denmark and mainly cultivated for its content of oil used for food and feed. The species is often genetically modified (GM), e.g. to herbicide tolerance or insect resistance. Spread of the inserted genes is likely to occur not only to the species itself, but also to its close relatives. The study showed a significant difference between phenotypes in the certified seeds and phenotypes in plants and in seeds in the field. The reason for this might be the presence of OSR volunteers from a previous crop surviving in the soil seed bank. This type of contamination is affected by e.g., harvest and post-harvest handling procedures (Fargue et al., 2003) and can consequently be reduced. More studies on...

Control of enteric pathogens in ready-to-eat vegetable crops in organic and ‘low input’ production systems: a HACCP-based approach Organic Eprints
Leifert, C.; Ball, K.; Volakakis, N.; Cooper, J.M..
Risks from pathogens such as Salmonella, Yersinia, Campylobacter and Escherichia coli O157 have been identified as a particular concern for organic and ‘low input’ food production systems that rely on livestock manure as a nutrient source. Current data do not allow any solid conclusions to be drawn about the level of this risk, relative to conventional production systems. This review describes six Risk Reduction Points (RRPs) where risks from enteric pathogens can be reduced in ready-to-eat vegetables. Changes can be made to animal husbandry practices (RRP1) to reduce inoculum levels in manure. Outdoor livestock management (RRP2) can be optimized to eliminate the risk of faecal material entering irrigation water. Manure storage and processing (RRP3), soil...

Convergence of Participatory Guarantee Systems and Internal Control Systems in an IFOAM European pilot project Organic Eprints
van den AKKER, J..
Organisation into Participatory Guarantee Systems was the main model for compliance with organic farming specifications until the beginning of the 1990s, even if it was not officially recognised as such. Control and certification by an independent body then became a requirement (standard EN NF 45011). This European project, initiated by IFOAM in 2005, showed that, among other things, an Internal Control System can provide a guarantee equivalent to that of a certification by an independent body, but on the basis of different tools: the transparency of local networks, the improvement of practices at the group level and the involvement of consumers. As a result, recognition of the Participatory Guarantee Systems by public authorities would reinforce consumer...

Converting Europe - the potential for organic farming as mainstream Organic Eprints
Lampkin, Nic.
Organic farming is increasingly recognised, by consumers, farmers, environmentalists and policy-makers, as one of a number of possible models for environmental, social and financial sustainability in agriculture. It has taken a long time to get this far. Organic farming’s roots can be traced back more than 100 years. Certified organic production dates back 25-30 years (70 years in the case of Demeter-certified bio-dynamic production). Yet little more than one percent of agriculture in Europe is organic, and much less than that in other parts of the world. Many have argued that organic farming will never capture the hearts and minds of the majority of farmers, because it is too idealistic and restrictive. What is needed, they argue, is an intermediate...
