Kansas Grain Supply Response to Economic and Biophysical Factors, 1977-2007 AgEcon
Boussios, David; Barkley, Andrew P..
This research identifies and quantifies the impact of biophysical and economic variables on Kansas grain supply for the period 1977- 2007. This research estimates total supply response by aggregating yield and acreage responses. Previous methods have effectively analyzed the response of crop supply through either acreage or yield responses. However, the method proposed in this research incorporates both yield and acreage response to various production variables through recursive modeling. The results include the negative impact of acreage expansion on aggregate yields and thus the impact on total supply. The results also show that previous methods underestimate supply response elasticities by as much as 97%. Furthermore, this research estimates supply...

Supply Management and Price Ceilings on Production Quota Values: Future or Folly? AgEcon
Cairns, Alexander P.; Meilke, Karl D.; Benett, Nick.
Since the inception of supply management in Canada during the 1970s, milk production quota has been used to regulate output and participation in the dairy industry. In recent years, milk quota values have increased dramatically, almost tripling in value since the mid-1980s. This led to the Dairy Farmers of Ontario intervening on the milk production quota exchange on two occasions: first, in November 2006 with a progressive transfer assessment and then in July 2009, replacing the former policy with a firm price ceiling – fixing the unit price of quota at $25,000. These policies represent a significant redistribution of economic benefits within the Ontario dairy community from milk producers approaching retirement and selling their quota to those remaining...

FACTORS AFFECTING THE SUPPLY OF QUALITY SPRING WHEATS: COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA; SUMMARY AgEcon
Dahl, Bruce L.; Wilson, William W..
The demand for high quality hard wheats has been increasing. In this paper, factors affecting the supply and consistency of high quality wheats in Canada and North Dakota were compared and contrasted. Differences exist in the development and release of new varieties which affect the number and quality of hard wheats produced. Variety numbers and concentration were examined with a range of measures. Wheat area in Canada was found to be concentrated in fewer varieties than in North Dakota. These results were more apparent for durum than for hard red spring wheats. However, there was a trend toward more concentration in North Dakota and less in Canada. Protein, yield, and trade-offs were compared. Alberta appears to have a comparative advantage in the...

United States chicken and grain exports to Mexico: competing for the same market? AgEcon
Duch-Carvallo, Teresa; Malaga, Jaime E..
The impacts of maintaining increasing rates of Mexican chicken meat imports from the United States on United States grain sorghum price and Mexican GS imports from the United States were modeled using a non-spatial, partial equilibrium, econometric, and simulation international trade model. Twenty five equations were simultaneously estimated and validated as a system using three stages least squares. A 9-year baseline was estimated under existing projections and the impacts of the increasing rates of Mexican chicken meat imports from the United States were simulated and compared with the baseline.

International sorghum trade: United States beyond the Mexican dependency? AgEcon
Duch-Carvallo, Teresa; Malaga, Jaime E..
This research proposes the estimation of a partial equilibrium econometric and simulation international trade model for sorghum: United States and Mexico component. Sixteen equations were simultaneously estimated and validated as a system using seemingly unrelated regression. Results on parameter estimates agree with economic theory and a working model for simulation and forecast was obtained. Forecast scenarios suggest that the dependency of sorghum trade between US and Mexico will continue.

Flores Cruz, Luis Alberto.
