The Multiple Use of Tropical Forests by Indigenous Peoples in Mexico: a Case of Adaptive Management Ecology and Society

The quest for an appropriate system of management for tropical ecosystems necessitates that ecologists consider the accumulated experiences of indigenous peoples in their long-term management of local resources, a subject of current ethnoecology. This paper provides data and empirical evidence of an indigenous multiple-use strategy (MUS) of tropical forest management existing in Mexico, that can be considered a case of adaptive management. This conclusion is based on the observation that some indigenous communities avoid common modernization routes toward specialized, unsustainable, and ecologically disruptive systems of production, and yet probably achieve the most successful tropical forest utilization design, in terms of biodiversity conservation,...

Transpiration from an Amazonian rainforest calculated from stomatal conductance measurements. Repositório Alice

A multi-layer combination equation has been used to calculate transpiration from a tropical rainforest in the central Amazon, Brazil. The five-layer formulation used through-canopy measurements of temperature and humidity deficit with leaf stomatal and boundary layer conductances scaled up to canopy layer values used a profile of canopy leaf area index derived from the literature. Net radiation input to each layer values was estimated from an above canopy measurement using an extinction function and leaf area index. Transpiration calculated for hourly and daily periods in a range of seasonal condition agreed well with those measured directly with and eddy correlation device. Stingless bees collect seeds and epicarp of fruits of Coussapoa asperifolia magnifolia to build up structures of their nests. Previous studies which state, that seeds observed in nests of stingles bees belong to fruits of Vismia spp. could not be confirmed.

Degraded fallow areas of primarily monocultural plantations will be transferred into a locally-adapted form of utilization through special consideration of soil microbiological factors (fungal and bacterial symbionts). In accordance with the heterogeneity of natural plant communities, polycultures of several perennial and annual ecologically adapted useful plants are installed. During the installation phase mycorrhizal fungi are introduced as importante biological factors to optimize the ecological fitness of the plant material. After the implantation of the polyculture the spontaneous secondary vegetation is managed carefully to reach a jointly beneficial growth of the secondary vegetation with the useful plants. SHIFT PROJECT ENV 45 (Manaus-AM)..
This project has by objective the quantification of water and nutrient fluxes in an experimental plantation, which is composed of different monoculture and polyculture systems with mainly perennial crops, as well as in primary and secondary forest at EMBRAPA-CPAA (Manaus, AM, Brasil). The flux measurements are expected to provide information about the efficiency with which the different land use systems exploit the available resources (water, nutrients) on the infertile soils of the area and minimize unproductive losses, e.g., through leaching. Efficient resource utilization is seem as a procondition of sustainable land use on this site.

In this study, we present the effects of different fruit and timber tree species in a multistrata agroforestry system in comparison to secondary vegetation and primary forest sites on inorganic and organic P pools of a Ferralsol in the Amazon basin. The S pools were also assessed, but could not be presented here due to the length of this contribution.

The experiments started during the first year of the second phase of this project were continued, such as studies about the effect of trees on soil phosphorus and sulfur abailability, dissolved organic nutrients in rainfall, throughfall, stemflow and soil solution. Additionally, we focussed on the effects of cover crops on tree nutrition, soil nutrient and water dynamics. Soil nitrogen and phosphorus uptake was investigated using different N-15 and P-32 tracer experiments. The fate of fertilizer nitrogen was studied with N-15 labelled ammoniumsulfate in plant, soil, soil extracts and soil solution. This is the third annual report of the project summarizing the results of 1997. The results of the biomass determination and nutrient uptake are included which were conducted during 1996/97. First results from stand hydrology (stemflow, throughfall) and soil nitrogen dynamics are incorporated. The report is devided into two parts. During this year, the project left the preparotory stage of purchasing, importing and installing equipment and entered into the stage of routine data collection and analysis.The report is divided into two parts. The following investigations were initiated by the increasing demand for the development of sustainable landuse systems in the Central Amazon, including high quality timber production. Mixed plantations are able to reduce the strong exploitation of hig quality timber trees in primary forests in this region.
