Natural living – a precondition for animal welfare in organic farming Organic Eprints
Lund, Dr. Vonne.
Results from a four year interdisciplinary project are presented. Animal welfare is discussed in relation to values and aims in organic farming. Based on analyzes of organic standards and other publications from the organic movement, basic “organic values” were defined. In addition, two studies of Swedish organic livestock farmers (one quantitative and one qualitative) were made. Ecocentric ethics was then identified as an ethical position for organic farming. The overall concern in organic farming is to develop sustainable farming systems, although animal welfare is also important. These aims are partly contrary, causing some difficult dilemmas related to animal welfare. The actual welfare situation in organic animal husbandry was scrutinized through a...

Netzwerke nachhaltiger Landwirtschaft im GVO-induzierten institutionellen Wandel Organic Eprints
Pick, Doris.
In many countries of the world regional actors and their networks seem to be concerned about genetically engineered plants, food, feed and seed. Especially regional actors involved in organic and natural food and farming business seem to lead the way in wanting to know more about the source of their food, what it contains and how it is produced. Sustainable producing Farmers want to protect their plants and produce from the influence of pollen drift from GM plants. Thus the Introduction of GM plants requires complex innovations in regularizing ecological, social and economic relationships and it induces various institutional changes even on local level. This paper gives an inside over institutional changes which occurred in selected study regions...

Neuer Trend: Bio ohne Knospe Organic Eprints
Schiess, Christophe; Schaedeli, Alfred.

New Nordic Rurality. Enacting terroir as rootless American innovation or soiled European tradition Organic Eprints
Ostrowski, Kasper.
The Nordic foodscape has changed and a new reservoir for rural enactments emerged. In this new Nordic reservoir the notion of terroir seems pivotal - not least when considering cheese production. Terroir, however, is primarily understood in a strictly European sense, accentuating soil and tradition. Drawing on readings of ‘dairy produce strategies’ and deploying a possible world induced STS attitude, a crude model for differentiating American and European enactments of terroir is investigated in this paper. I claim that in the US, geographical claims are ‘uprooted’ and generally highlight alethic modalities – centerstaging individual competence and innovation. Geographical claims in EU, on the other hand, steers towards communal practices and deontic...

Nové požadavky unie na kontrolu Organic Eprints
Urban, Jiri.
Proto realizoval Bioinstitut o. p. s. Olomouc projekt Vývoj metodiky pro využívání a hodnocení analýz pesticidů v kontrole ekologického zemědělství v České republice (odběr vzorků, evaluace a interpretace). Celá metodika je ke stažení na www.bioinstitut.cz.

Observing the observers: uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Ecology and Society
Noe, Egon; Aarhus University; Egon.Noe@agrsci.dk.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of our research was to determine the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explored how values were embedded in five research perspectives: (1) food science, (2) discourse analysis, (3) phenomenology, (4) neoclassical welfare economics, and (5) actor-network theory. Value has various meanings according to different scientific perspectives. A strategy for including and balancing different forms of knowledge in overall...

Ökoverbände in der Identitätskrise? Eine clubtheoretische Analyse Organic Eprints
Jahn, Gabriele; Schramm, Matthias; Spiller, Prof. Dr. Achim.
Compliance with the rules of organic production has been motivated intrinsically. Cooperative behaviour, thus, has been a key issue in assuring organic quality. However, the environment is continuously changing. An increasing number of farmers is producing organic food not only driven by altruism, but by economic factors and public support (i.e., subsidies). The following contribution aims to reveal determinants for an efficient quality assurance within an organic farming association. It focuses on changes related to the introduction of a public certification system and the “loss” of social cohesion among the organic farmers. Based on the theory of club goods, an application of the decision theory approach underlines the analysis.

Open access publishing: What is world’s best practice? Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Open access publishing delivers on the dream of centuries - the free and unfettered access to the written word. However there are shades of openness and the question raised is 'what is world's best practice for open access publishing?' Four criteria are proposed to generate a star rating for an open access journal - for ‘openness’ - with a star available for meeting each criterion, to a maximum of four. The open access criteria for scoring star ratings are: (1) There is no barrier to access for the reader; (2) It is free to the author/s; (3) Copyright is retained by the author/s; and (4) The paper can be freely distributed under licence. The Journal of Organic Systems 'ticks all the boxes' to rate as a four-star open access journal.

Opinions in Europe on Certification on Mass Catering Organic Eprints
Lukas, Melanie.
The presentation was held on the EU IFOAM forum during the BioFach 2010. First results from this explorative research on the status quo of organic certification on mass catering actions were presented. The study was performed during the european iPOPY(innovative Public Organic Procurement for Youth)-research project funded by CORE Organic (Part I) . The results clarify how different the member states work with the grey area of non-regulation of organic certification in mass catering actions. It is displayed that operators as certification bodies and other professionals who are familar with this sector are more or less unsatisfied. On the majority the respondents think of mainly positive impacts if they think about a potential harmonisation process of...

Opportunities and challenges for organic food and agriculture: Australia and China Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
The opportunities to grow the "organic pie" are substantial for both China and Australia. However the challenges and the opportunities are far from identical, although the goals of growing the production area, increasing the market awareness, fostering consumer confidence in certification and labeling, broadening the product offering and availability, and increasing sales are shared issues. Some of the aspects of organics opportunity and challenge are examined in this book chapter. Comparative statistics between Australia and China are presented in Table 3.1.

Organic Certification in the iPOPY Countries and Germany – Current Status and Future Challenges Organic Eprints
Strassner, Carola; Roehl, Rainer.
The paper is part of the proceedings of an iPOPY seminar. Organic production has to be certified and labeled along the supply chain in order to maintain trust in organic premium products. Since January 1st 2009, organic certification in Europe is subject to the new Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 of 28 June 2007. This regulation specifically excludes so-called mass catering operations. It is up to EU member states to apply national rules or private standards insofar as these comply with community law. The paper presents the state of the art and upcoming changes of organic certification of out-of-home catering in Germany with regard to Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Italy.
