COMPARISON OF HEALTH STATUS BETWEEN ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL PRODUCTS Organic Eprints
This paper reports results of to trial carried out to estimate the hygienic-sanitary of samples obtained from organic farming in comparison with products obtained from conventional agriculture. In three years of activity were carried out analysis on samples common or durum wheat, and processing products like flour, bran, macaroni and bread, obtained from biological and conventional method. Also samples of vegetables and fruits were analysed. The laboratory analyses have been focalized qualitative on quantitative and evaluation of fungal contamination and surveying of pesticide residues level. The great size of collected dates have not highlighted substantial differences between the two analyzed typologies. About pesticide residues levels,...

Proceedings of the COST SUSVAR/ECO-PB Workshop on organic plant breeding strategies and the use of molecular markers Organic Eprints
In many countries, national projects are in progress to investigate the sustainable low-input approach. In the present COST network, these projects are coordinated by means of exchange of materials, establishing common methods for assessment and statistical analyses and by combining national experimental results. The common framework is cereal production in low-input sustainable systems with emphasis on crop diversity. The network is organised into six Working Groups, five focusing on specific research areas and one focusing on the practical application of the research results for variety testing:1)plant genetics and plant breeding,2)biostatistics,3)plant nutrition and soil microbiology,4)weed biology and plant competition,5)plant pathology and plant disease...

Organic Agriculture and Climate Change Organic Eprints
The problem Climate change is one of the most challenging issues the mankind faces today. The Earth is warming up! The burning of fossil fuels, the cutting of forests and environmentally – unfriendly farming practices are the key reasons why the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has risen by 0.74 °C since the end of the 19th century. The temperature rise causes glaciers, permafrost and sea ice melting. It disturbs and destroys ecosystems and species, causes sea levels rising, seasons changing and more extreme weather, resulting in more frequent flooding and drought, more disease, more famine and hundreds of millions of environmental refugees. The role of agriculture Contrary to most other sectors, agriculture is both the source of...

Soil Stresses, Quality and Care Organic Eprints
Elmholt, Susanne; Stenberg, Bo; Grønlund, Arne; nuutinen, Visa.
NJF-seminar Soil Stresses, Quality and Care Different people understand differently the word soil. The soil can be looked upon as a body of nature and a part of the landscape. To many people soil is the substrate for plant growth and a prerequisite for food production and wealth. A third and perhaps growingly important view is soil as the physical ground for housings, roads and industry. Soil is important to the whole society, not only for the agricultural sector. Soil has important ecological functions as it interacts with the dead bedrock, the atmosphere, the water, and the living organisms. Important functions are: Biomass producer and transformer Geomembrane, filter and buffer Habitat for living organisms Raw material and building ground...

Towards Improved Quality in Organic Food Production Organic Eprints
From 21 to 23 January 2009 the fifth QLIF training and exchange workshop took place. Inspired by the theme “Towards improved quality in organic food production” a group of 20 participants and 11 lecturers had intensive days with lectures, discussion, exchange and some practical experience in research set-up and taste experiments. Fifteen nationalities exchanged their experiences in research in product quality. Many results from comparative studies between conventional and organic products were presented and discussed. In some presentations more emphasis was laid on exploring the mechanism behind the presence or absence of certain health-influencing plant components. Comparative studies will be continued, but exploring the mechanisms behind found...

Novel methods for reducing agricultural nutrient loading and eutrophication Organic Eprints
In many intensively cultivated areas, surface and ground waters suffer from eutrophication and deterioration of the water quality: To improve the environmental protection actions of agriculture, EU countries have adopted common legislation, such as Nitrate Directive and the Water Framework Directive, which set limits to the use of manure and aim at good ecological state of waters by 2015, respectively. Moreover, different voluntary measures and environmental schemes are being supported financially by EU and national goverments to reduce agricultural nutrient loading and eutrophication, for instance by optimizing phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) fertilization, controlling erosion and promoting the establishment of buffer zones and wetlands. Yet, good...

Innovative Research for Organic 3.0 - Proceedings of the Scientific Track Organic Eprints
The future challenges in food production and consumption appear clear: - Feed 9 to 11 billion people in the next 30 to 80 years with enough, affordable and healthy food. - Protect the environment (e.g. soils, water, air, biodiversity and landscapes) whilst increasingly under pressure to achieve greater levels of intensification. - Mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change in all farming systems and value chains. - Incorporate novel ethics, food habits, demographics and lifestyles into the food chains. - Produce food on limited farmland and fossil (non-renewable) resources efficiently and profitably. Several findings from scientific research and practical applications suggest that organic food and farming systems can help in...
