Proceedings and conclusions of "Workshop on Assurance of Quality and Safety in Organic Production Chains" in the EU project "Recommendations for improved procedures for securing consumer oriented food safety and quality of certified organic foods from plough to plate" (Organic HACCP) Organic Eprints
The purpose of the workshop was dialogue between representatives for major groups of stakeholders and the participants of the project Organic HACCP, a EU-funded concerted action. The method was to present and discuss the intentions, initial work and plans of the project, and adjust the plans for the subsequent work according to the advice received from the workshop participants. In the original plans for the Organic HACCP project, it was designed according to the general assumptions and conventions normally used in the area of food safety and quality: The assumption was that “the consumers” have a defined, prioritised list of food properties that they demand, so that consumer oriented improvements would simply be to discover this list and fulfil as many...

Proceedings of I SEAE CONGRESS SPANISH SOCIETY FOR ORGANIC FARMING Organic Eprints
Seeing the positive and negative effects of current agricultural practices, which replaced those used for thousands of years, has allowed to search and, as a result, developing new ways of operating, new ideas, approaches and global considerations. Liebig's ideas have been applied in limited profitability approaches and little considerations of sustainability of ecosystems or crop quality have been made(just remember about some military synthesized products during the great wars which were later used in agriculture as fertilizers or pesticides looking for new "markets"). We must resume some management issues such as organic matter, rotations or mineral contributions which are defended by the "law of the minimum". Under this framework, the Spanish...

Proceedings of III SEAE CONGRESS SPANISH SOCIETY FOR ORGANIC FARMING Organic Eprints
The intensive agriculture predominant model in the most developed countries, emerged since the mid-twentieth century, due to the technological innovations attributed to the named Green Revolution. It is a productivism system that requires a high use of production factors such as mineral fertilizers, pesticides, fuel, natural resources, etc. All these factors produce a high impact on the environment and the soil -erosion, salinization- and pollution of waters -eutrophication and pollution- and biodiversity impoverishment.

Proceedings of the COST SUSVAR/ECO-PB Workshop on organic plant breeding strategies and the use of molecular markers Organic Eprints
In many countries, national projects are in progress to investigate the sustainable low-input approach. In the present COST network, these projects are coordinated by means of exchange of materials, establishing common methods for assessment and statistical analyses and by combining national experimental results. The common framework is cereal production in low-input sustainable systems with emphasis on crop diversity. The network is organised into six Working Groups, five focusing on specific research areas and one focusing on the practical application of the research results for variety testing:1)plant genetics and plant breeding,2)biostatistics,3)plant nutrition and soil microbiology,4)weed biology and plant competition,5)plant pathology and plant disease...

Proceedings of the XI SEAE CONGRESS (SPANISH SOCIETY FOR ORGANIC FARMING) Organic Eprints
Equipo Técnico , SEAE.
Organic production is based on agroecology, a science studying ecological farming systems from three dimensions: transdisciplinary knowledge, interdisciplinary agricultural practices and social movements. Their integration provides a way of generating collective action alternatives to the dominant food system. Since a bit more than a decade, the European civil society, the farmers and organic farmers movements have debated in discussion forums about the future of the agriculture, demanding favorable changes for agroecological systems inspired by experiences linked to food sovereignty, socio-political principles (autonomy, “active” participation of operators) and the enhancement of local knowledge. In the context of EU policies highlighted by innovation,...

Proceedings of V SEAE CONGRESS SPANISH SOCIETY FOR ORGANIC FARMING Organic Eprints
The V Congress of the SEAE was developed in the Gijón city and it was also the First Iberoamerican Congress of Agroecology. It has attracted a large involvement both in the total number of visitors and the papers presented, which is an indication of the growing strength and importance that organic farming is gaining in our society. The Congress performed five workshops during the first two days about "Making bread", "Analysis and control of foods", "Agroecology and pest control", "Participatory methodology for experimentation and consultancy in organic farming and rural development" and "The organic farming market: Initiatives and innovations in marketing for organic products”, among many other areas.
