A Choice Modelling Survey of Community Attitudes to Improvements in Environmental Quality in NSW Catchments AgEcon
Mazur, Kasia; Bennett, Jeffrey W..
The survey was designed to estimate environmental values suitable for integration into MOSAIC, a bio-economic model for catchment and farm level planning. Local residents, as well as distant rural and distant urban communities, were surveyed in three NSW catchments (Lachlan, Namoi and Hawkesbury-Nepean) using choice modelling (CM). The survey aimed to find out respondents’ attitudes about, and preferences for, potential natural resource management (NRM) improvements. In total, 3,997 responses were collected from seven different locations in NSW. Fourteen split samples were established to allow for testing of incentive compatibility in CM, the impact of respondent location on values held, and scale effects. This research report describes the development...

A Comparative Study of FAO and USDA Data on Production, Area, and Trade of Major Food Staples AgEcon
Paulino, Leonardo A.; Tseng, Shen Sheng.
The setting of priorities for policy research at the International Food Policy Research Institute depends largely on an understanding of basic national and global trends in food production, consumption, and trade. Although IFPRI draws heavily on the analyses by FAO and other agencies for much of this information, it is also intensely examines the basic data, not only to carefully adjust its own program but to judge independently the key variable in these trends. Initially IFPRI worked largely from USDA data, but recent efforts have depended primarily on FAO statistics. This experience with the published data of both agencies has led Leonardo Paulino and Shen Sheng Tseng to undertake this analyses available to the research community at large, we hope to...

A comparative study of the implementation of organic food in school meal systems in four European countries Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Thorkild; Nölting, Benjamin; Kristensen, Niels Heine; Løes, Anne-Kristin.
Based on national reports from Denmark, Finland, Italy and Norway, describing the school meal systems and to which extent organic food is integrated there, this report identifies differences between the four countries and experiences made with organic food procurement and the dissemination of organic ingredients in school meals. Such knowledge will help to understand the possibilities and restrictions for increasing organic food in school meal systems, and to reveal the room of manoeuvre for public organic food procurement for youth in each country. In the report, similarities and differences of the national school meal systems in general are first discussed, because this context determines the scope of organic food procurement. The history and current...

A Comparison of Household Food Security in Canada and the United States AgEcon
Nord, Mark; Hopwood, Heather.
Food security—consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life—is essential for health and good nutrition. The extent to which a nation’s population achieves food security is an indication of its material and social well-being. Differences in the prevalence of household level food insecurity between Canada and the United States are described at the national level and for selected economic and demographic subpopulations. Associations of food security with economic and demographic characteristics are examined in multivariate analyses that hold other characteristics constant. Comparable measures of household food security were calculated from the nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 2.2 (2004) and the U.S. Current...

A comparison of the barriers faced by Latin American and ACP Countries' exports of tropical products Inra
Bureau, J.C.; Disdier, A.C.; Ramos, P..

A Comparison of the Great Mississippi River Floods of 1993 and 2011: Implications for Crop Insurance and Reinsurance AgEcon
Vergara, Oscar.
The flooding situation in 2011 is similar in nature to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1993, but different in the particulars. First, the timing of the flood within the growing season is different. Second, the two floods occurred in different regions, with the 1993 flood affecting a portion of the Corn Belt and the 2011 flood affecting a region farther south. While floodwaters have inundated several million acres of cropland in 2011, yield losses from delayed planting are expected to be limited. Furthermore, the affected states from the current flood are primarily Group 2 states under the current SRA, which are provided with greater reinsurance protection by the government than the Group 1 states.

A Comparison of Vertical Coordination in the U.S. Poultry, Egg, and Pork Industries AgEcon
Martinez, Stephen W..
Changes in vertical coordination in the U.S. broiler, turkey, and egg industries decades ago may provide useful insight into more recent developments in the U.S. pork industry. The need to protect relationship- specific investments created incentives for contracts and vertical integration. In the presence of relationship-specific investments, market uncertainty from a number of sources helped determine the type of contract/vertical coordination alternative selected.

A Comparison of Wholesaler/Retailer Business Characteristics of Natural Products between Ghana and Rwanda AgEcon
Govindasamy, Ramu; Simon, James E.; Puduri, Venkata S.; Juliani, H. Rodolfo; Asante-Dartey, Juliana; Arthur, Hanson; Diawuo, Bismarck; Acquaye, Dan; Hitimana, Nicholas.
The usage of natural products is becoming an increasingly common consumer phenomenon due to increasing health consciousness, and because of their naturalness, and medicinal qualities of the products. African countries are very rich with natural products resources and supplies. The continent’s rich botanical heritage offers an excellent opportunity to diversify away from other traditional exports. Europe and the USA are particularly promising markets for natural products. Thus, it is advantageous to examine development of natural products exporting as alternative or complimentary economic opportunities for many African people, especially those in the rural areas. This paper has explores both factors which promote and which act as obstacles to the natural...

A CONSIDERATION OF THE DEVOLUTION OF FEDERAL AGRICULTURAL POLICY AgEcon
Gundersen, Craig; Kuhn, Betsey A.; Offutt, Susan E.; Morehart, Mitchell J..
Diverse needs and preferences across the United States provide justification for the devolution, or decentralization, of many Federal Government programs to the State or local level. The move toward devolution, however, has not been evidenced in U.S. agricultural policy, despite significant differences across States in such areas as commodity production, production costs, income distribution, and opportunities for off-farm work. The existing structure of USDA funding and program delivery already reflects an appreciation of the gains from devolution, with some programs accommodating differences in State and regional preferences. This report considers the implications of devolving $22 billion in 2003 budget outlays, mostly for domestic commodity and natural...

A Cross-Country Analysis of Household Responses to Adult Mortality in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications For HIV/AIDS Mitigation And Rural Development Policies. AgEcon
Mather, David; Donovan, Cynthia; Jayne, Thomas S.; Weber, Michael T.; Chapoto, Antony; Mazhangara, Edward; Bailey, Linda; Yoo, Kyeongwon; Yamano, Takashi; Mghenyi, Elliot W..
This paper summarizes and synthesizes across the results of a set of country studies on the effects of prime-age adult mortality on rural households in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Zambia. Each study is based on large representative rural household surveys. These findings have implications for the design of efforts to mitigate some of the most important effects of rural adult mortality, and for key development policies and priorities.

A cseresznyelégy elleni védekezés lehetősége Beauveria bassiana hatóanyagú készítménnyel Organic Eprints

A Diagnostic Perspective Assessment of the Production and Marketing System for Mangoes in the Eastern Caribbean AgEcon
Hrapsky, Alan; Weber, Michael T.; Riley, Harold.
The objective of this research was to provide USAID with a diagnostic-prescriptive assessment of the mango commodity system that would be useful in the design and management of USAID’s project portfolio. A secondary objective was to demonstrate how a market-guided food systems approach could be applied to a particular commodity, thus facilitating coordination of vertical stages in the agricultural production and marketing system. The food systems approach begins with identification of consumer requirements in terms of product specifications and volume flows, examines the production changes necessary to achieve these requirements, then systematically diagnoses constraints at each stage in the production/marketing chain, and prescribes realistic...

A Dietary Assessment of the U.S. Food Supply: Comparing Per Capita Food Consumption with Food Guide Pyramid Serving Recommendations AgEcon
Kantor, Linda Scott.
Most American diets do not meet Federal Food Guide Pyramid dietary recommendations. On average, people consume too many servings of added fats and sugars and too few servings of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, lean meats, and foods made from whole grains compared with a reference set of Food Guide Pyramid serving recommendations appropriate to the age and gender composition of the U.S. population. In addition, while the healthfulness of diets has improved over time, the pace of improvement has been uneven. For example, while Americans consumed record amounts of fruits and vegetables in 1996, consumption of caloric sweeteners also reached a 27-year high. This report is the first dietary assessment to use ERSís time-series food supply data to compare...
