A Northern Tablelands Whole-Farm Linear Program for Economic Evaluation of New Technologies at the Farm-Level AgEcon
Alford, Andrew R.; Griffith, Garry R.; Cacho, Oscar J..
The benefits of evaluating a new technology in a whole-farm context using a linear programming framework are well known. Linear programming allows the joint evaluation of concurrent farm activities, while considering the costs and returns of all enterprises and any resource adjustments imposed by adoption of the technology. This Report provides a rationale for and description of a whole-farm linear programming model that can be used for the economic evaluation of new technologies that are applicable to beef/sheep grazing farms typical of the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. In this farming system, the whole-farm focus incorporates various aspects of the pasture base, resource constraints and sheep and cattle interactions. An overview of economic...

A Note on Price Information in Commodity Markets with Evidence from the Cotton Market AgEcon
Hudson, Darren; Ethridge, Don E.; Segarra, Eduardo.
Theory and analysis of price information and its importance have typically assumed that the information is correct. Additionally, most analyses have centered on general price information assuming homogeneous products. This paper examines the implications of incorrect price information on the basis of quality, with evidence from prior research on cotton prices used as an illustration. Results of a conceptual analysis indicate that quality has direct implications on the production and marketing process. Incorrect information on prices of different quality leads to distortions in the market and market inefficiency.

A Pilot Study of Halal Goat-Meat Consumption in Atlanta, Georgia AgEcon
Ibrahim, Mohammed; Liu, Xuanli; Nelson, Mack C..
Atlanta is a relatively large market for goat meat. As in most metropolitan areas around the U.S., goat-meat consumption has grown steadily in Atlanta over the past decade (Northwest Cooperative Development Center 2005; Nettles and Bukenya 2004). This growth is attributed to the influx of immigrants from goat-meat-eating countries into the U.S. over the same period (Gipson 1999). The increase in demand for goat meat has made the U.S. a net importer of competitively priced goat meat from Australia and New Zealand into major U.S cities such as Atlanta (USDA-FAS 2006). The fact that goat-meat imports from Australia have steadily increased over the years makes markets such as Atlanta of particular interest to both Georgia goat-meat suppliers and meat-goat...

A plot of one's own: gender relations and irrigated land allocation policies in Burkina Faso AgEcon
Zwarteveen, Margreet Z..
Discusses the potential opportunities and pitfalls of introducing market forces into the process of water allocation. Proposes several preconditions for beneficial privatization of water allocation and argues for a more sophisticated form of analysis than that generally allowed by proponents of basic needs or of free market approaches.

A Portrait of Participants in Crop Insurance Programs AgEcon
Nimpagaritse, Fabrice.
Farm Analysis Bulletins (FAB) are undertaken to provide a better understanding of Canadian agriculture at the farm level. Using data from various sources such as Census, Farm Financial Surveys (FFS), Taxfiler, NISA database, etc, FAB's provide information on farm situation as well as highlighting and discussing farm related issues. By using the Farm Financial Surveys (1999 to 2004), this bulletin provides characteristics of farmers participating in crop insurance programs. Charts and tables with a brief accompanying text are used to describe participants in crop insurance. Participation rate in crop insurance has grown slightly from 49% in 1999 to 53% in 2003.Grains and oilseeds farms are more likely to participate in crop insurance programs than other...

A preliminary assessment of coral bleaching in Mozambique OceanDocs
Schleyer, M.; Obura, D.; Motta, H.; Rodrigues, M.J..
The 1997-1998 El Niño southern oscillation caused elevated sea temperatures that resulted in global coral bleaching. Coral reefs constitute an important biological resource in terms of their complex biodiversity and are the basis for tropical fisheries and marine ecotourism. They represent one of Mozambique’s main coastal assets, and coastal communities and the growing tourism industry rely mainly on reef-based resources. Today, about 6.6 million people live within Mozambique’s 48 coastal administrative districts. This represents 42% of the current population (15.7 million), which is expected to grow at 3% p.a. (INE, 1998). In 1994, the population density in coastal districts was 28 persons/km2. In 1996, much higher densities were recorded in the coastal...

A Preliminary Assessment of Coral Bleaching in Mozambique OceanDocs
Schleyer, M.; Obura, D.; Rodrigues, M.J..
The 1997-1998 El Nino southern oscillation (ENSO) caused elevated sea temperatures that resulted in global coral bleaching. Coral reefs constitute an important biological resource in terms of their complex biodiversity and are the basis for tropical reef fisheries and marine ecotourism. They represent one of Mozambique's main coastal assets and its coastal communities and growing tourism industry rely mainly on reef-based resources. Mozambican artisanal fisheries are largely centred on reefs and are responsible for about 70% of the total catch, highlighting their importance. Most tourism similarly occurs along the coast where the best infrastructure is established, especially near the coral reefs of Pemba, Mozambique Island, the Bazaruto Archipelago,...

A Preliminary Assessment of the Potential Role of Information and Communication Technology in Support of Poverty Alleviation Policies for Rural Populations--AGRI-ICT Project Report AgEcon
Bourgeois, Robin.
This working paper summarizes the results of a structured collective exercise where participants first presented their country reports and experience. A cross-country comparison was then conducted, item by item in order to identify common and specific problems. A brainstorming approach enabled to discuss possible solutions and strategies to be further tailored for each country. Finally, in a follow up step these strategies were synthesized into a more comprehensive framework intended to provide basic guidelines for other Asian and Pacific countries in the field of ICT to support decision-making for poverty alleviation in rural areas where poor populations rely on the CGPRT sector.

A preliminary exploration of two approaches for documenting 'mental models' held by stakeholders in the crocodile catchment, South africa Inra
Biggs, H.; du Toit, D.; Etienne, M.; Jones, N.; Leitch, A.; Lynam, T.; Pollard, S.; Stone-Jovicich, S..
The ARDI method focuses on developing a schematic representation of individual or group understanding of key elements of the social ecological system. Ten individual mental models were elicited from water resource users and managers; the collective mental model process could not be completed in the time available. The ARDI assessment’s systems diagrams provide insight into sustainability through showing how stakeholders and resources interact. It also illuminates drivers of the system, as understood by different stakeholders and the way in which these stakeholders understand the system to function. This research found that with respect to sustainability, the Reserve and compliance with the Reserve, both methods suggested that the Reserve is a concept that...
