A Potential Composite Material for Possible Applications in Earth Reinforcement CIGR Journal
M. Z. Hossain.
It is evident that the inadequate frictional resistance and meager cohesion of conventional reinforcements in reinforced earth structures such as geogrids, geosynthetics and wire meshes are serious shortcomings that not only impose constraints in structural designs, but also affect the stability of reinforced earth structures. In this regard, the benefits of earth reinforcing materials in improving the interaction resistances are eminent. For the reinforcement to be effective, two conditions need to be satisfied i.e. it must possess enough strength to withstand tension failure and adhesion failure. This paper highlights some experimental results on the performance behavior of thin cementitious composite elements reinforced by wire meshes under shear tests...

A reidentification of the Australian Muridae in the Leiden Museum listed by F. A. Jentink in 1887 and 1888 Naturalis
Mahoney, J.A..
A number of Australian rodent specimens are listed by Jentink (1887; 1888) in two catalogues of the mammals in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, Netherlands. The 1887 catalogue deals with the osteological material; in it, thirteen Australian rodent skulls are recorded. The 1888 catalogue contains the mounted and spirit specimens; the Australian rodents are represented here by thirty-three mounted specimens, of which ten have the skulls listed in the 1887 catalogue, and three spirit specimens with the skulls not extracted. The mode of preservation of a further specimen, now a mounted skin, is not indicated. It too had the skull in place; therefore, there are three skulls for which no skins are listed. Many of these specimens were identified...

A remarkable feature in the dentine of teeth of Odontocetes Naturalis
Utrecht, W.L. van.
The neonatal line in teeth of Phocoena phocoena is studied. The length of the neonatal line measured from the upper end of the cementum to the point where the line ends against that layer, may offer an indication for sex determination in this species.

A Review of Fixed Bed Gasification Systems for Biomass CIGR Journal
Sangeeta Chopra; Anil K Jain.
The gasification of biomass into useful fuel enhances its potential as a renewable energy resource. The fixed bed gasification systems are classified as updraft, Imbert downdraft, throatless downdraft, crossdraft and two stage gasifiers. Updraft gasifiers are suitable for gasification of biomass containing high ash (up to 15 %) and high moisture content (up to 50 %) and generate producer gas having high tar content (50–100 g/Nm3). The high temperature (830 oC) air gasification of biomass in updraft gasifiers increase the lower calorific value of producer gas and reduce the tar content. The updraft gasifiers have been used for gasification of bark, wood blocks, chips and pellets, straw, maize cobs, refuse derived fuel (RDF), and waste pellets with air and...

A Review of Oil Palm Fruit Plantation and Production under the Contract- Growers Scheme in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu States of India CIGR Journal
O. K Owolarafe; C. Arumughan.
An assessment of the oil palm plantation management and fruit supply, under the Indian contract-growers scheme was conducted in this study. Data was collected from about 96 plantations on the age of plantation, size of plantation, cost of establishment, maintenance practices and cost , yield of fresh fruit bunches, profitability of the scheme for the farmers and so on. It was observed that most of the plantations (69.8%) are in the range of 6-10 years of age while the size of 1-5 ha dominates the sample (76%). Farmers are able to procure land and source fund for the establishment of plantations. Farmers also perform maintenance activities (irrigation, weeding and fertilizer application) satisfactorily, though incure considerable cost on the activities....

A Serial Domain Decomposition Method for Discrete Element Method Simulation of Soil–Wheel Interactions CIGR Journal
Hiroshi Nakashima; Kyoto University.
We applied a serial domain decomposition method (DDM) to our two-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) program and investigated the effectiveness of DDM in terms of computer hardware. The developed program could obtain sufficiently accurate results for wheel slip, traction, and gross traction, comparable to DEM without serial DDM. We also confirmed that the soil deformation field under the wheel for DEM with serial DDM was similar to that for DEM without DDM. Moreover, the increased sub-domain loop was effective in reducing computational time in the case of serial DDM. Since each sub-domain loop contains the time integration and coordinate update routine, further optimization of memory usage in our serial DDM may be possible, which would allow...

A SIMULATED STUDY OF AN AUCTION MARKET AgEcon
Whan, R.B.; Richardson, Robert A..
A simulated model of an auction market is developed showing the relationship between the variation in valuations, the price variation and the number of independent bidders in the market. Average prices paid in a market with two or three bidders are less than average valuations. Average prices are progressively greater than average valuations as the number of bidders increases beyond four. Some applications of this model in the Australian wool market are discussed.

A STUDY OF BANANA SUPPLY AND PRICE PATTERNS ON THE SYDNEY WHOLESALE MARKET: AN APPLICATION OF SPECTRAL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Aggrey-Mensah, W.; Tuckwell, N.E..
Spectral analysis is applied to weekly supply and price series for bananas traded on the Sydney wholesale market. Many interesting features are revealed such as the pronounced seasonal component and the two week lag structure between the supply and price series. These results are discussed in relation to the known behaviour of the market and some implications for marketing decisions are tentatively drawn.

A study on the diversity of island floras Naturalis
Balgooy, M.M.J. van.
Of 75 regions, some continental and others insular, the diversity as expressed in the number of Phanerogam genera is compared. As could be expected it is found that richness in both continental and insular regions is positively correlated with size and with proximity to source areas. In comparable continental and insular regions the former are always richer; increase in the number of genera with increasing size is stronger in the former. There are various factors disturbing the relations between size/diversity and isolation/diversity. The role of these factors, such as climate, age, topography and the like are discussed. It is shown that isolated islands are not always poor (New Caledonia, Fiji, Lord Howe I., Rapa, etc.). On the other hand the poverty of...

A Table Mounted Device for Cracking Dika Nut (Irvingia gabonensis) CIGR Journal
B. S. Ogusina; Obafemi Awolowo University,; O. A. Koya; Obafemi Awolowo University,; O. O. Adeosun; Obafemi Awolowo University.
A simply designed machine for cracking dika nut was fabricated. The nut is fed by hand inbetween a toggle mechanism comprising of the slider and a fixed block. Fracture mechanism was based on the deformation characteristics of dried dika nut under uni-axial compression. When actuated, the slider compresses the nutshell to failure along its line of symmetry. The experimental machine gave 100% cracking efficiency but with 24% kernel breakage in cracking sun-dried dika nut at 6.6% moisture content (w.b). The machine provides a viable and effective technique for safe dika kernel extraction.

A Theoretical Approach for Determining Irregularities of the Bottom of the Tillage Layer Caused by Horizontal Axis Rotary Tillers CIGR Journal
Ahmed Celik; Ismail Ozturk; Thomas R. Way.
Horizontal axis rotary tillers produce irregularities in the tillage depth when they are inappropriately operated and constructed. In such cases, mixing and breaking of soil throughout the tillage layer is not uniform and some untilled ridges will remain at the bottom determining the effect of design and operational characteristics on the height of the resultant ridges at the bottom of the tillage layer. In this study, a method based on the derived geometrical relationships between the rotary tiller operational parameters was developed to determine heights of ridges occurring at the bottom of the tillage layer. The ridge heights can be calculated for various combinations of blade peripheral speed, forward travel speed, rotor radius, and the number of...
