A model to define operational irrigation frequency for maximum yield of crops. Repositório Alice
MILLAR, A. A.; CHOUDHURY, E. N..

A new cavernicolous freshwater crab from New Guinea (Crustacea Decapoda) Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B..
Through the kindness of Mr. Philip Chapman of Culford, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, it was made possible for me to examine a male and a female of a species of cavernicolous crab from the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, collected there by Mr. N. Plumley. The species proved to be new to science and its description is given below. A recent revision of the New Guinea freshwater crabs (Bott, 1974) listed 13 certain and 3 dubious species from the island. These 13 species belong to 3 genera (Rouxana Bott, 1969: 5 species; Geelvinkia Bott, 1974: 3 species; and Holthuisana Bott, 1969: 5 species). The first two genera and the nominate subgenus of the third are confined to New Guinea. All three genera belong to the family Sundathelphusidae Bott, 1969. The new...

A new fruit bat of the genus Myonycteris Matschie, 1899, from eastern Kenya and Tanzania (Mammalia, Megachiroptera) Naturalis
Bergmans, W..
Myonycteris relicta n. sp. is described from the Shimba Hills in southeast Kenya and from the Usambara Mountains in northeast Tanzania. The species is larger than the only other known African mainland species of the genus, Myonycteris torquata (Dobson, 1878), from the Central and West African rain forests and, if compared to M. torquata and the only other species in the genus, M. brachycephala (Bocage, 1889) from São Tomé, has a relatively longer rostrum, a more deflected cranial axis, and further differs in number, shape and position of its teeth. The new species provides new arguments for the relationship between the genera Myonycteris Matschie, 1899, and Lissonycteris Andersen, 1912. It is believed that Myonycteris relicta may be a forest species and as...

A new genus and species of bopyrid isopod infesting alpheid shrimps of the genus Synalpheus in the western Atlantic Ocean Naturalis
Bourdon, R.; Markham, J.C..
Bopyrione synalphei, new genus, new species, a parasite of Synalpheus goodei Coutière in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, S. bousfieldi Chace, S. pectiniger Coutière and Synalpheus spp. in Haiti and Synalpheus sp. in Curaçao, is described. A member of the bopyrid subfamily Bopyrinae, whose diagnosis is slightly amended to accommodate it, it is closely allied to the genera Bopyroides Stimpson and Bopyrina Kossmann. Reexamination of the holotype of Bopyroides woodmasoni Chopra, 1923, a parasite of Synalpheus neomeris (de Man) in the Andaman Islands, indicates that it is also assignable to Bopyrione.

Contribution n° 18 = Une nouvelle station et une rédescription de Brania subterranea (Polychaeta, Syllidae): Station Biologique Léopold III, Ile de Laing. Contribution n° 18 OMA
Govaere, J.C.R..
Brania subterranea (Hartmann-Schroeder, 1956), recorded for the first time from the West Pacific coasts, is studied by scanning electron microscopy. A well developed nuchal organ with cilia bearing disk-like enlargements could be demonstrated. The entrance of the pharynx carries ten papillae and a circlet of ordinary cilia. The fine structure of the simple and compound bristles and also their distribution in correlation with the length of the specimens is given in detail.

A new species of Echinogammarus from Northern Spain, Echinogammarus pseudoaquilifer nov. spec. (Crustacea, Amphipoda) Naturalis
Platvoet, Dirk; Pinkster, Sjouk.
New material of the genus Echinogammarus belonging to the berilloni-group was collected in the western Pyrenees and north-western Spain. In material from spring regions and caves a new species was found, which in general appearance seems to be intermediate between E. berilloni s.s. and E. aquilifer. A comparative description of the new species is given along with some notes on the ecology of Echinogammarus berilloni.

A new species of Euchirella (fam. Aetideidae) from the "Dana"-collections (Copepoda, Calanoida) Naturalis
Vaupel-Klein, J.C. von.
SUMMARY Euchirella paulinae spec. nov. is described and illustrated in extenso ; various structures are outlined in detail for the first time. The external morphology of the new species is discussed with reference to the other species of the genus. Some brief remarks are made about the anatomical terminology of the mouthparts of Copepoda, and on the necessity to always describe new species really scrutinously. INTRODUCTION In the course of a revision of the aetideid genera Euchirella Giesbrecht, 1888 and Pseudochirella G. O. Sars, 1920, an undescribed species of Euchirella was found in the material originating from the Danish "Dana" Expedition 1928-30. The new species will be reported upon separately in the present paper. Its tentative relationships with...

A NOTE ON BIAS IN THE ESTIMATED EFFECTS OF BEEF IMPORTS ON U.S. MEAT PRICES AgEcon
Ryan, Timothy J..
The impact of beef imports on United States meat prices is a highly emotional and controversial issue. Congressmen representing urban districts, and to a lesser extent the Administration, look towards beef imports as a way of containing rapid increases in meat prices. Congressmen and Senators from beef-producing States regard beef imports as a direct attack on the U.S. beef-producing industry. These differing views are being reconciled through Congress considering amendments to the Meat Import Law (Public Law 88-482). The impacts and the amendments are of vital interest to Australia because about 25 per cent of Australia's beef production is sold on the lucrative U.S. market. In this note it is argued that, in general, the reported impacts on U.S. meat...

A note on Heterophylly and Branching patterns in the Amyema complex (Loranthaceae) Naturalis
Kuijt, Job.
Attention is drawn to the unusual distribution of flowers and inflorescences in a number of species, and to certain peculiarities of branching and phyllotaxy. The latter are explained by a heterophylly which so far has escaped notice, involving the formation and early disappearance of a pair of minute intercalary cataphylls. A similar branching pattern and flower distribution is evident in Helicanthes.

A NOTE ON THE BOX-COX TRANSFORMATION UNDER HETEROSKEDASTICITY AgEcon
Blaylock, James R.; Salathe, Larry E.; Green, Richard D..
The Box-Cox transformation (BCT) has been frequently used as both a flexible functional form and as a decision device to distinguish among alternative model specifications. Most researchers have failed to recognize that the BCT when applied to the dependent variable can compensate for heteroskedasticity. This paper investigates a new procedure which estimates both the BCT parameters and the analytic form of heteroskedasticity. Results from the new procedure are compared to estimates obtained from the traditional method of estimating BCT models. Comparisons indicate that proper specification of the error variance can influence the magnitude of BCT parameters and alter the results of hypothesis testing.
