A new thalassocypridine genus (Crusacea, Ostracoda) from brackish waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with the description of a new species OMA
Wouters, K..
Mangalocypria, a new genus of the tribe Thalassocypridini, is described, with a new species, and two previously described species, from Papua New Guinea, the Comoros and Indonesia. The new genus has a remarkable set of characters separating it from other members in the tribe: thin-shelled, translucent and smooth valves, V-process of lower lip developed as a rake, and postero- distal claw of furca fixed to shaft without a joint. The affinities of Mangalocypria gen. nov. with other genera is discussed, and some taxonomical problems in the tribe Thalassocypridini are commented upon. The diagnostic value of incompletely differentiated Zenker organs of premature males is discussed.

A new type of symbiosis: Heterocyathus japonicus (Cnidaria: Scleractinia) living on Fissidentalium vernedei (Mollusca: Scaphopoda) Naturalis
Zibrowius, H..
After introductory remarks on the solitary coral genera Heterocyathus and Heteropsammia, commonly known to be symbiotic with a sipunculan inhabiting a gastropod shell, Heterocyathus japonicus is redescribed in detail. It occurs from Taiwan to northern Honshu, Japan. It is the first of these symbiotic corals to be found in association with an alternative partner, living specimens of the large scaphopod Fissidentalium vernedei. The coral always occupies the apical end of the shell, the part that protrudes from the sediment. It is thus preserved from being buried and is maintained in an upright position (the same advantages it also gets when its partner is a sipunculan). On live F. vernedei, H. japonicus incrusts a manganese rich black mineral coating that...

A NONLINEAR MODEL OF INFORMATION AND COORDINATION IN HOG PRODUCTION: TESTING THE COASIAN-FOWLERIAN DYNAMIC HYPOTHESES AgEcon
Ruth, Matthias; Cloutier, L. Martin; Garcia, Philip.
The pig-cycle 'explanation' expunded by Coase and Fowler followed a well-integrated economic logic and provides tremendous insight into our understanding of commodity cycles. The paper presents a simulation model that replicates all of Coase and Fowler's results and tests its robustness with an application to U.S. hog production.

A NONPARAMETRIC EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS FOR A SAMPLE OF KANSAS SWINE OPERATIONS AgEcon
Rowland, William W.; Langemeier, Michael R.; Schurle, Bryan W.; Featherstone, Allen M..
This study evaluates the economic competitiveness of a sample of Kansas farrow-to-finish operations by estimating relative firm efficiency using nonparametric mathematical programming techniques. Measures of technical, allocative, scale, economic, and overall efficiency are then related to farm characteristics to identify sources of efficiency. Results indicate that overall efficient farms produce a high quantity of pork per litter, produce a portion of their own feed grains, generate a large portion of their income from swine and other livestock enterprises, and have a lower debt-to-asset ratio.

A NOTE ON DEALING WITH POULTRY IN DEMAND ANALYSIS AgEcon
Eales, James S.; Hyde, Jeffrey; Schrader, Lee F..
Two approaches have been taken to the modeling of poultry demand in U.S. meat demand studies. One has been to ignore turkey, and estimate demands for beef, pork, and chicken. The second has been to include turkey by combining it with chicken, and estimating demands for beef, pork, and poultry. The validity of these two approaches is examined using quarterly U.S. time-series data from 1980-96. The results indicate that either approach to the modeling of poultry demand is appropriate.

A NOTE ON FIXING MISBEHAVING MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMS: POST-OPTIMALITY PROCEDURES AND GAMS-RELATED SOFTWARE AgEcon
McCarl, Bruce A..
Mathematical programming formulations can yield faulty answers. Models can be unbounded, infeasible, or optimal with unrealistic answers. This article presents techniques for theory-based discovery of the cause of faulty models. The approaches are demonstrated in the context of linear programming. They have been computerized and interfaced using the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS), and are distributed free of charge through new GAMS versions and an outline web page.

A note on the demographic, economic and social structures of fishermen households IRD
Roch, Jean; Luong, N.; Clignet, Rémi.
The management of risks attached to fishing involves specific residential strategies. Some fishermen minimise these risks by living with relatives who are engaged in other activities, but others prefer to live with other fishermen, provided that they are at least as successful as themselves. The strategies chosen are conditioned by the status occupied by the individuals studied in the fisherman's hierarchy. The higher the status, the larger the household, but also the less significant the participation of its female members in the labour market and the importance of their contribution to familial resources. Indeed, the management of risks attached to fishing involves also long term strategies. The higher one is in the hierarchy of fishermen, the more one...

A NOTE ON THE EFFICIENCY OF INCOME REDISTRIBUTION WITH SIMPLE AND COMBINED POLICIES AgEcon
Bullock, David S.; Salhofer, Klaus.
Recent studies have investigated the efficiencies of policies that use several policy instruments simultaneously (for example, a policy that uses a production subsidy combined with a production quota). Several studies of very specific cases find that optimal combination of two policy instruments is more efficient than optimal independent use of either. In this note we demonstrate using set theory and maximization theory, that all such specific results are examples of a more general result, which is that by combining m instruments efficiently, a government can always be at least as efficient as when using a subset of those m instruments. This result holds for any of the several definitions of "efficiency" in the literature.

A polinização e sua relação com a termogênese em espécies de Arecaceae e Annonaceae da Amazônia Central Acta Amazonica
KÜCHMEISTER,Heike; WEBBER,Antonio C.; SILBERBAUER-GOTTSBERGER,Ilse; GOTTSBERGER,Gerhard.

A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF THE PROPOSED 1998 TAXPAYERS' RIGHTS AMENDMENTS TO THE IOWA CONSTITUTION AND FISCAL CONSEQUENCES ASSUMING IMPLEMENTATION FROM FY1984 TO PRESENT AgEcon
Edelman, Mark A..
This staff paper reviews the Senate (SSB2072) and House (HSB688) versions of a proposed 1998 Amendment to the Iowa Constitution and provides a preliminary analysis of the fiscal impacts on the state general fund receipts, general fund appropriations, and local property taxes assuming each proposal was implemented in FY 1984. While the year-to-year reductions in spending are relatively small, the cumulative fiscal impact of the SSB2072 would likely have resulted in (1) a FY1997 state general fund limit that allows 32 percent less spending than actual FY1997, (2) a $710 million reduction in the growth of state aid to local government, and (3) a 29.7 percent increase in property taxes, if property taxes were used to fully replace the reduction in growth of...
