A SECTORAL ANALYSIS OF AGRICULTURAL TRADE LIBERALIZATION AgEcon
Kennedy, P. Lynn; Atici, Cemal.
Complete agricultural trade liberalization between the United States and the European Union is examined with respect to the agricultural sector. A static, partial equilibrium model, distinguishing among the European Union, the United States, and a politically passive rest of the world, is used to simulate agricultural free trade. The results of this research reveal how European Union and United States adoption of free trade affects domestic and world prices, production, consumption, self-sufficiency, and welfare.

A simple indicator for diagnosing nitrate leaching risk below the root zone using the Tensionic tensiometers Inra
Cuny, H.; Wery, J.; Gaufres, F..

A simple way of avoiding feed wastage in European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, under self-feeding conditions ArchiMer
Coves, Denis; Gasset, Eric; Lemarie, Gilles; Dutto, Gilbert.
Self-feeding systems allow fish to freely express feeding activity. A simple rod at the water surface can act as a trigger and provide fish with a way of obtaining pellets from a feeder. Such a rod presented to experienced European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax, may lead to feed wastage, probably as a result of unintentional fish contacts with the trigger. Trigger protection screens have been designed to prevent fish contacting the trigger by chance, and the efficacy of such screens was tested. Nocturnal and diurnal feed delivery and feed wasted were compared under conditions where the rod was unprotected or protected by semi-cylindrical or cylindrical screens. Tests were conducted using an unrestricted self-feeding regime (reward: 0.2 g pellet per kg of...

A simulation bio-economic model applications for fishery management introducing uncertainty IRD
Chaboud, Christian.
Simulation bio-economic models are powerful tools to understand the impact of exogenous factors, natural or economic, on fisheries dynamics and to help decision making in fisheries management. We have developed a model with three components (resource, fleet and management) which is especially oriented to analyse the impact of different management policies, in deterministic or stochastic decisions. This model is particularly adapted to explore bias situations (economic or biological). A friendly PC software has been developed and will be presented. Simulations can be easily run for fishery dynamics analysis and management policy evaluation, in relation with different sets of hypothesis. (Résumé d'auteur)

A single-step purification of bothropstoxin-1 BJMBR
Spencer,P.J.; Aird,S.D.; Boni-Mitake,M.; Nascimento,N.; Rogero,J.R..
Bothrops venoms are complex mixtures of components with a wide range of biological activities. Among these substances, myotoxins have been investigated by several groups. Bothropstoxin-1 (Bthtx-1) is a phospholipase A2-like basic myotoxin from Bothrops jararacussu. The purification of this component involves two chromatographic steps. Although providing a pure material, the association of these two steps is time consuming and a single-step method using high performance chromatography media would be useful. In the present study, we describe a single-step purification method for Bthtx-1. Bothrops jararacussu venom was dissolved in 1 ml buffer. After centrifugation, the supernatant was injected into a Resource-S cation exchange column connected to an FPLC...

A state of the art on meiofaunal respiration and production OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
The aerobic respiration of meiofauna in general and of nematodes in particular is studied by means of manometric (Cartesian or related divers) or electrode-based (polarographic electrodes) techniques. The former allow highly accurate measurements on individual or small batches of nematodes, while the latter, less sensitive technique allows rapid and highly reproducible measurements under a variety of abiotic conditions.Nematode respiration is commonly described in a power relation R = aWb, where b averages 0.75 and a represents a measure of metabolic intensity. Published estimates of total nematode community respiration are scant, but seem to agree on an average value of 61...

A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE NORTH DAKOTA LIGNITE ENERGY INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STATE ECONOMY FOR 1997 AND PROJECTED FOR 1998 AgEcon
Leistritz, F. Larry; Coon, Randal C..
This report provides estimates of the lignite industry's contribution to the North Dakota economy, using key economic indicators such as retail trade activity, personal income, total business activity, employment, and tax revenues. The estimates are based on actual industry expenditures for 1997 and projected expenditures for 1998. This analysis contains two measures of the relative importance of the lignite energy industry in North Dakota. First, the industry's share of the state's total sales to final demand (or exports) is evaluated. Second, the business volume generated by the industry is compared to the total gross business volume for the state. Expenditures were obtained from a survey of firms involved in lignite-related activities (mining or...

A STOCHASTIC DOMINANCE ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVE SUGAR BEET- AND NAVY BEAN- BASED CROP ROTATIONS IN MICHIGAN AgEcon
Gebremedhin, Berhanu; Schwab, Gerald; Harwood, Richard R.; Christenson, Donald; Bricker, Calvin.
Sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L.) and navy beans (Phaseoulus vulgaris L.) have been important target crops in the crop rotation systems of many Michigan growers, particularly in the Saginaw Valley and the Thumb region. The recent decline in sugar beet yields combined with the erratic navy bean yields have led to concern about the optimal crop rotation for the East Central region in Michigan. Risk is an important consideration in a farmer's choice of cropping systems. This study uses 20 years of experimental data from the Michigan State University Saginaw Valley Research Farm to determine the risk efficiency of alternative sugar beet- and navy bean- based crop rotations that included corn (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa...

A STRUCTURAL-EQUATION GME ESTIMATOR AgEcon
Marsh, Thomas L.; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Cardell, N. Scott.
A generalized maximum entropy estimator is developed for the linear simultaneous equations systems model. We provide results on large and small sample properties of the estimator. Empirical results illustrate efficiency advantages of the generalized maximum entropy estimator proposed in this study over traditional estimators (e.g., 2SLS and 3SLS).

A STUDY OF CONSUMERS AT A SMALL FARMERS' MARKET IN MAINE: RESULTS FROM A 1995 SURVEY AgEcon
Kezis, Alan S.; Gwebu, Thula; Peavey, Stephanie R.; Cheng, Hsiang-Tai.
This study was based on a survey of customers who shopped at a small farmers' market during the summer/fall market season of 1995. Information from a survey completed by 239 shoppers was used to develop a profile of the primary consumer group, defined as those who shop regularly at the market and spend the most per visit. Comparisons between survey data and census data for the local population showed that primary shoppers at the market had higher education, higher annual household income, tended to be slightly older, and were more likely to be employed women. For the most part, the respondents were loyal, weekly shoppers who patronized the market because of the high quality of the products. Most reported that they were willing to pay more for produce...

A terra e a mudança: reprodução social e património fundiário na Terra Fria Transmontana IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Rodrigues, Orlando.
