A Low-Tech Method for Reef Rehabilitation by Stabilisation of Transplanted Corals OceanDocs
Lindahl, U..
Many coral reefs that have been subjected to severe coral mortality may erode into rubble before the reef framework has been stabilised by the growth of recruiting or surviving corals and other calcifying organisms. Since unconsolidated coral rubble provides a poor substrate for coral recruitment and subsequent growth, these damages can persist for a long time, even where there is ample supply of coral larvae. Rehabilitation of this type of habitat through coral transplantation has therefore been hampered since the substrate does not provide a base for attachment. Unattached corals that are moved by water movements may suffer severe damages through breakage and abrasion, and are also at risk of being buried in the shifting sediment. The aim of the present...

A MARKET ANALYSIS OF DAIRY COMPACTS USING A MODEL OF DISCRIMINATORY PRICING AgEcon
Bailey, Kenneth W..
This article evaluates the market impacts of forming regional dairy compacts. The economic tradeoffs between dairy farmers, consumers, processors, and retailers is studied. A discriminatory pricing model is developed that solves for the manufacturing milk price. This model evaluates the market impacts of regional dairy compacts under revised federal milk marketing orders and illustrates the economic tradeoffs.

A Market-Oriented Approach for Multiple Objective Optimization in Agro-Ecological Land Use Planning AgEcon
Agrell, Per J..
The development of a third world country requires a conscious balance between different planning and policy issues, such as population growth rate, gross national income, self reliance and long-term sustainable ecological development. This paper reports on a cross-disciplinary project to design a decision support system (DSS) that aims to assist government policy makers in planning the regional agricultural development of the Bungoma region in Kenya. Contrary to previous research, which has taken the perspective of a central planner and a static market, this model extends the scope by introducing the market mechanisms and price subsidies. The model is based on the Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) model, a previously developed non-interactive optimization...

A MODEL FOR THE ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF PLANTATION BIOMASS PRODUCTION FOR CO-FIRING WITH COAL IN ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION AgEcon
Nienow, Sara; McNamara, Kevin T.; Gillespie, Andrew R.; Preckel, Paul V..
Public and private electric utilities are considering co-firing biomass with coal as a strategy to reduce the levels of CO2, SO2 and NO, in stack emissions, as well as a response to state legislative mandates requiring the use of renewable fuels. This analysis examines the conditions under which biomass co-firing is economically feasible for utilities and woody biomass producers and describes additional environmental and community benefits associated with biomass use. This paper presents a case study of woody biomass production and co-firing at the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) Michigan City Unit No.12 power plant. A Salix (willow) production budget was created to assess the feasibility of plantation tree production to supply biomass to...

A MODEL OF AGRICULTURAL INSURANCE IN EVALUATING ASYMMETRIC INFORMATION PROBLEMS AgEcon
Islam, Zahirul; Turvey, Calum G.; Hoy, Michael.
The main motivation for this paper is the recognition of the fact that asymmetric information is the form of moral hazard and adverse selection results in sizeable efficiency losses. These costs are passed back to producers in the form of excessively high premium rates and also passed back to the government via the crop insurance subsidy program. A secondary motivation stems from a recent debate in the literature regarding the specific effects of moral hazard on agricultural input use. Conventional wisdom suggests that moral hazard will induce producers to reduce input usage. A competing hypothesis has emerged which suggests that moral hazard may induce producers to increase their usage or risk increasing inputs. The main objective of this paper was to...

A MODEL OF RETAIL OUTLET SELECTION FOR BEEF AgEcon
Medina, Sara; Ward, Ronald W..
Multinomial logit models were used to explain consumer outlet selection when buying beef, specifically roasts, steaks, ground beef, and other types of beef. Outlets were grouped into supermarkets, butchers, warehouses, supercenters, and others, and the probability of selecting each outlet type over a range of demographic and other variables was tested. The models were estimated from household data, with 198,682 observations used in the estimation. Empirical results showed that the type of beef purchased and the size of the purchase played an importance role in the choice of outlet. Furthermore, the increase in mobility seen when consumers buy larger unit cuts could not be fully explained by price discounting. Implications for the potential growth of...

A Multilevel Economic Analysis of the Wheat Market in Pakistan AgEcon
Ashfaq, Muhammad; Parton, Kevin A.; Griffith, Garry R.; Piggott, Roley R..
Government price policy in Pakistan affects both the supply and demand of wheat. The wheat market has been established in a particular idiosyncratic manner in Pakistan, and a thorough appraisal of policy needs to take this into account. Hence, to analyse various policy interventions, this study develops a multi-level wheat market model. After considering the real world aspects of the wheat marketing chain, a conceptual framework is developed involving five market levels. This is then translated into a multi-equation econometric model. The model is based on secondary time series data from 1971 to 1996. It consists of equations representing supply, demand, stock holding, importing and price formation. The model is used to estimate changes in consumer...

A new bathyphotometer for bioluminescence measurements on the Armorican continental shelf (northeastern Atlantic) ArchiMer
Geistdoerfer, P; Vincendeau, Ma.
A new bathyphotometer has been developed by the Oceanographic Laboratory of the French Naval Academy which has performed a series of in situ bioluminescence: measurements since 1994. It is used as an additional probe to a Seabird (R) CTD. It measures planktonic bioluminescence. It is associated with a SeaTech (R) fluorometer. The Armorican shelf has particularly been investigated since July 1994. Results obtained in January and April 1995 off Brittany (France), at the entrance to the Bay of Douarnenez and in the northern Bay of Biscay are presented as examples. A method to separate the bioluminescence background from sharp peaks is presented. The strength of bioluminescence signals was related to seasonal planktonic biomass fluctuations, low in winter,...

A New Psychological Approach to Dichotomous Choice CVM. AgEcon
Cook, Darron M..
This paper considers an alternative approach dichotomous choice contingent valuation (DC), referred to as the dissonance minimising format (DM). This method seeks to reduce the extent of positive bias at the formulation stage of stated preference experiments known as “yea-saying”, in order to gain a more accurate measure of respondent WTP. Both the DC and DM methodologies are applied to the case study of minesite rehabilitation within Victoria, with particular reference to the abandonment of open pits following small-scale gold mining operations. The results presented here indicate that the DM model has considerable promise for reducing yea-saying within dichotomous choice CV. The results also indicate that the community welfare loss associated with...

A new species of Pseudoniphargus (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from subterranean water of northeastern Morocco: Historical biogeography and evolutionary aspects Naturalis
Abiari, A. Fakher el; Oulbaz, Z.; Messouli, M.; Coineau, N..
A new species of Pseudoniphargus, P. longiflagellum (Crustacea, Amphipoda) is described from subterranean fresh water of the Riftan region of Morocco. This species is closely related to the group P. ruffoi-P. longipes, which shares several apomorphic characters. The two-step model of colonization and evolution provides an understanding of the origin and the age of this stygobiont. P. longiflagellum is derived from marine ancestors that lived in the coastal groundwater of the Tethyan South-Rifian channel during the Miocene Tortonian period. The regression of this corridor during the late Tortonian period or at the beginning of the Messinian period may have played a major role in the evolutionary history through vicariance.

A new variety of Arisaema ciliatum (Araceae) Naturalis
Gouda, E.J.; Gusman, G..
In September 1981, seeds of Arisaema were harvested by Carla Teune, Hortus Botanicus Leiden, near Liuba, area of Mt Minya Konka (Gonga Shan), Szechuan (Sichuan) Province, China, at 3600 m altitude. During the trip, with Roy Lancaster and others, no pressed herbarium specimen was collected. Michael Hoog, who runned a well known Dutch Nursery, was given five lots of seed numbered CT 368 to CT 372, all provisionally labeled A. consanguineum Schott. All numbers were collected the same day along the same path. After the seedlings flowered, it appeared there was no reason to keep them separate; they were merged and distributed in the trade as Arisaema CT 369 (Antoine Hoog, 1998, private communication). The following Latin description of A. ciliatum H. Li var....

A NONPARAMETRIC APPROACH TO SHORT-RUN PRODUCTION ANALYSIS IN A DYNAMIC CONTEXT AgEcon
Silva, Elvira.
A nonparametric approach to short-run production analysis from a cost and profit perspectives is developed in the context of an adjustment-cost model. The adjustment-cost hypothesis is incorporated in the theoretical framework in the form of the properties of the firm's technology with respect to the quasi-fixed factors. Nonparametric tests for consistency of a data series with short-run cost minimization and profit maximization are developed and the empirical implementation of these tests to U.S. agriculture is presented. The empirical evidence does not refute that agricultural producers behave collectively as if they were a short-run cost minimizing and profit maximizing firm.
