A STATIC POLICY FOR A DYNAMIC INDUSTRY: THE CALIFORNIA YOUNG ACT OF 1935 AgEcon
Sumner, Daniel A.; Wilson, Norbert L.W..
An economic history of the development of California dairy policies from 1935 to 1965 is used to support the hypothesis that the incompatibility of discrete policy changes for a dynamic industry generates deadweight losses. Combining quantitative industry data with legal and personal narratives provides evidence in support of the hypothesis.

A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE NORTH DAKOTA LIGNITE ENERGY INDUSTRY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STATE ECONOMY FOR 1998 AND PROJECTED 1999 AgEcon
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
This report provides estimates of the lignite industry's contribution to the North Dakota economy, using key economic indicators such as retail trade activity, personal income, total business activity, employment, and tax revenues. The estimates are based on actual industry expenditures for 1998 and projected expenditures for 1999. This analysis contains two measures of the relative importance of the lignite energy industry in North Dakota. First, the industry's share of the state's total sales to final demand (or exports) is evaluated. Second, the business volume generated by the industry is compared to the total gross business volume for the state. Expenditures were obtained from a survey of firms involved in lignite-related activities (mining or...

A STRATEGIC RATIONALE FOR CAPTIVE SUPPLIES AgEcon
Love, H. Alan; Burton, Diana M..
Partial backward integration is prevalent in many agricultural and natural resource processing industries. A strategic rationale for partial backward integration is developed for a dominant firm with a competitive fringe purchasing from competitive input suppliers. A partially backward integrated dominant firm potentially can increase profit through production efficiency gains and through a lower price for externally purchasing input. The optimal degree of backward integration results when the dominant firm's profit from exerting monopsony market power in the external spot market equals its profit from producing raw input internally, less the incremental cost of acquiring internal raw input production capacity. Comparative statics results are consistent...

A Structural Model of the World Wool Market AgEcon
Layman, B.D..
This paper summarises the development, structure and data sources of the Western Australian World Wool Model. The model is a comparative static, partial equilibrium model of the world wool market. The technique used for the model is applied general equilibrium (AGE) modelling. Western Australia is separated from the rest of Australia as a production region. A key feature of the model is that raw wool is broken down into 9 different qualities, which determine the end use of the wool. The construction of a database containing these wool qualities is detailed. Potential uses for the model are outlined, and results are compared and contrasted with earlier structural models of the world wool market. Finally, advantages and disadvantages of the approach taken...

A STUDY ON SUBSTITUTION AND SEQUENCING EFFECTS USING CHECK-OFF MECHANISM AgEcon
Rudra, Bidisha; Keeler, Andrew G.; McIntosh, Christopher S..
Voluntary donations to non-game species protection through state income tax checkoffs are analyzed. An analogy between the contingent valuation method and check-off scheme is drawn by observing the existence of agenda effects in the latter. Results reveal that substitution and sequencing effects exist between species protection and other public goods.

A SUSTAINABLE HERBICIDE AND GRASS ESTABLISHMENT APPROACH FOR LAND RECLAMATION: A CASE OF RUSSIAN KNAPWEED AgEcon
Feuz, Bridger; Held, Larry J.; Jacobs, James J.; Whitson, Thomas D..
Controlling Russian knapweed with an integrated system of herbicide followed by seeding perennial grass is profitable in yielding an 8.7% average rate of return, and repaying the establishment costs in approximately six years. Moreover, the system is sustainable by exploiting plant competition and eliminating herbicide usage in later years.

A TARGET CONSUMER PROFILE AND POSITIONING FOR PROMOTION OF VALUE-ADDED SALAD PRODUCTS: A CASE STUDY AgEcon
Wolf, Marianne McGarry.
A consumer survey was used to generate a demographic profile of the target market for value-added produce products compared to consumers who purchase bulk produce products. Those who purchase value-added produce products are more likely to be young, single, and without children than are those who do not purchase value-added produce products. The produce characteristics that are most desirable to consumers when making their purchase decision were identified. The extremely to very desirable characteristics of produce are those that concern taste, quality, and value. The very to somewhat desirable characteristics of produce are those that relate to the convenience of using and buying produce. Consumers' perceptions of the characteristics of packaged salad...

A taxonomic, phylogenetic and biogeographic study of the genus Acanthophora (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) Naturalis
Jong, Yde S.D.M. de; Hitipeuw, Creusa; Prud’homme van Reine, Willem F..
A cladistic analysis, based on a taxonomic revision is carried out for 7 Acanthophora species using 19 characters. Hypotheses on species affinities are based primarily on morphological characters. Because most species show only few distinctive characters, emphasis was placed on features of spine development, either in relation to vegetative or to reproductive structures. Global distribution of 7 Acanthophora species: viz. A. aokii, A. dendroides, A. muscoides, A. nayadiformis, A. pacifica, A. ramulosa, and A. spicifera, shows a discontinuous pattern. Although widely distributed species are present (A. muscoides and A. spicifera), a disjunct distribution of other species occurs in the Pacific (A. aokii), Indian Ocean (A. dendroides), East-Atlantic region...

A THRESHOLD VALUE ANALYSIS OF PROPOSED FOREST RESERVES AgEcon
Bennett, Jeffrey W..
Threshold Value Analysis (TVA) may be a useful input into natural resource decision making when non-market values are involved. The decision rule under a TVA is to protect a natural resource if the (non-marketed and unquantified) benefits so arising are deemed to be greater than a threshold value defined by the (marketed and quantified) developmental benefits foregone. In this paper, threshold values are calculated for a range of forest protection options being considered under the Regional Forestry Agreements being negotiated in New South Wales. A static analysis is first undertaken. This is then enhanced by the incorporation of factors that affect the alternative streams of value through time. Extensive sensitivity testing to demonstrate the impact of...

A two-dimensional particle tracking model for pollution dispersion in A Coruna and Vigo Rias (NW Spain) ArchiMer
Gomez-gesteira, M; Montero, P; Prego, R; Taboada, Jj; Leitao, P; Ruiz-villarreal, M; Neves, R; Perez-villar, V.
A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model is applied to study the dispersion processes and residence time in two Galician rias (A Coruna and Vigo, NW Spain) under summer conditions. In A Coruna a long residence time was found in the harbour area due to the existence of a dock, and a short one in the river area. On the contrary, in Vigo, the residence time is smaller in the harbour area, due to the Rande Strait, beyond which the river effect is negligible.

A TWO-STAGE MODEL OF THE DEMAND FOR SPECIALTY CROP INSURANCE AgEcon
Knox, Lyle; Richards, Timothy J..
Legislators are considering raising catastrophic (CAT 50% coverage) crop insurance premiums. However, estimates of a two-stage coverage-choice and participation model using county-level data from California grape growers show that the demand for CAT insurance is price-elastic, therefore, premium increases will worsen the financial performance of the grape-insurance program.

A utilização e localização das instalações no sistema de exploração de ovinos de Trás-os-Montes IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Barbosa, José Carlos; Teixeira, A..

J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
OLIVEIRA,Paola Franssinetti Nunes Machado; CARVALHO,Maria Acelina Martins; SOUZA,Wilson Machado; MIGLINO,Maria Angélica.

A WHITE PAPER ON THE RELEVANCE OF SOCIAL CAPITAL FOR THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES (CANR) AgEcon
Robison, Lindon J..
Social capital is about relationships that are often based on earned or inherited kernels of commonality. Social capital raises the ethical question of when relationships should be allowed to influence outcomes. The essential theory underlying the social capital paradigm is that relationships of sympathy or social capital influence almost every interpersonal transaction. Since interpersonal transactions occur in many settings, the study of social capital is multi-disciplinary and interested in such diverse topics as charitable giving, leadership development, educational achievements, migration patterns, formation of cooperatives, how people care for the environment, diffusion of technology, advertising, economic development, family integrity, flow of...
