A framework for selecting a suite of indicators for fisheries management ArchiMer
Rice, Jake; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
We develop a framework for the objective selection of a suite of indicators for use in fisheries management. The framework encompasses eight steps, and provides guidance on pitfalls to be avoided at each step. Step I identifies user groups and their needs, featuring the setting of operational objectives, and Step 2 identifies a corresponding list of candidate indicators. Step 3 assigns weights to nine screening criteria for the candidate indicators: concreteness, theoretical basis, public awareness, cost, measurement, historic data, sensitivity, responsiveness, and specificity. Step 4 scores the indicators against the criteria, and Step 5 summarizes the results. Steps 3-5 offer technical aspects on which guidance is provided, including scoring standards...

A Generic Four-step Methodology For Institutional Analysis AgEcon
Herrera, Paul A.; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido; Espinel, Ramon L..
The central hypothesis of this paper is that there may be situations in which the traditional approach to institutional analysis is of limited applicability. Such an approach, which has been called 'comparative institutional analysis', consists of comparing institutional environments and institutional arrangements in terms of specific economic or other efficiency criteria to see which one performs better. However, because of limitations to accurately predict the future performance of alternative institutional settings, comparisons are not always possible. Furthermore, in most cases the only information available is the performance of the current institutional setting. To account for this methodological deficiency, a generic methodology for institutional...

A genetic marker to separate Emiliania huxleyi (Prymnesiophyceae) morphotypes Marine & Ocean Science
Schroeder, D.C.; Biggi, G.F.; Hall, M.; Davy, J.; Martinez, J.M.; Richardson, A.J.; Malin, G.; Wilson, W.H..
Emiliania huxleyi (Lohm.) Hay and Mohler is a ubiquitous unicellular marine alga surrounded by an elaborate covering of calcite platelets called coccoliths. It is an important primary producer involved in oceanic biogeochemistry and climate regulation. Currently, E. huxleyi is separated into five morphotypes based on morphometric, physiological, biochemical, and immunological differences. However, a genetic marker has yet to be found to characterize these morphotypes. With the use of sequence analysis and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, we discovered a genetic marker that correlates significantly with the separation of the most widely recognized A and B morphotypes. Furthermore, we reveal that the A morphotype is composed of a number of distinct...

A GIS-based inventory of sediment pollution for watershed restoration planning AgEcon
Logan, Joanne; Walker, Forbes R.; Jolly, Brooke A.; Foster, Tiffany.
Under the Clean Water Act, U.S. states are required to establish water quality standards, list impaired waterbodies and create Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) for impaired waters. Sediment contributes greatly to the water impairment in Tennessee, with agriculture often cited as the primary source. The watershed (catchment) in our study, Pond Creek, is listed as impaired for sediment and will require a TMDL and watershed restoration plan in the near future. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has developed an Integrated Pollutant Source Identification tool, consisting of aerial photographs, GIS database, and set of analysis spreadsheets to help plan watershed restoration efforts. We used this tool to assess sediment delivery from pastures, soil loss from...

A Global Project for Comparative Farm Analysis: The International Farm Comparison Network IFCN AgEcon
Deblitz, Claus; Hemme, Torsten; Isermeyer, Folkhard; Plessmann, Frank.
Before IFCN was founded, existing farm-level data sets for international comparisons - if there were any - were not comparable. Differences from country to country regarding methodology applied, extent of data sets (physical and financial figures), and availability of up-to-date figures caused the incomparability. The IFCN is a world-wide association of agricultural scientists, advisors and farmers. Within the framework of this co-operation, farms and agricultural production systems are defined that are typical for their regions. Their economic situation is analysed, and the farms can be projected into the future. At present, the network, which is coordinated by the IFCN-centre in Braunschweig, Germany, operates for three branches: dairy (> 30...

A Globally Flexible, Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System: An Application for Meat Demand in Taiwan AgEcon
Liu, Kang Ernest; Sun, Chia-Hung.
A new demand system, combining the quadratic almost ideal demand system and the Fourier expenditure system, is introduced. An application for meat consumption in Taiwan indicates that the new demand system fits the data well and that the restriction to the usual specifications, such as locally flexible functional form, linear Engel curve, and both, are rejected.

A Growth-Focused Spatial Econometric Model of Agricultural Land Development in the Northeast AgEcon
Hailu, Yohannes G.; Brown, Cheryl.
Using county data for West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, estimation of a system of simultaneous equations shows that population growth, higher taxes, high farmland value, and high initial per capita income accelerate farmland development, but return on farmland, government assistance to farmers, farmland conservation, and farming agglomeration reduce development pressure.

A HAZAI ÖKOMÉZ PIACI LEHETŐSÉGEI AgEcon
Panyor, Agota.
A 2081/92/EGK rendelet szerinti közösségi oltalom (eredetvédelem) lehetőségét célszerű lenne kihasználni a termelői csoportosulások aktív közreműködésével. Nagy figyelmet indokolt szentelni a fiatal generációk...

A Hedonic Analysis of Sheep and Goat Prices in a Changing Environment: The Role of Consumers and Implications for Management AgEcon
Singh-Knights, Doolarie; Smith, Dennis K.; Knights, Marlon.
This paper examines whether buyers of live lambs and goats in the Northeast region have systematic preferences for specific live product attributes (age, weight, market class, sales lot size, market location and timing of sale) and whether they pay significantly different prices for these attributes consistent with their preferences. Non-linear hedonic models are estimated using auction price and quality data for live lambs and goats in specific Northeast markets. The results indicate that both lamb and goat buyers have systematic preferences for specific weight, market class and timing of sale, and that these preferences are implicitly reflected in prices offered in traditional auction markets. Producers can capitalize on price differences based on...

A Hedonic Perspective to Estimating a Marginal Value Function for a Subsistence Crop AgEcon
Edmeades, Svetlana.
A hedonic price model is used to estimate the marginal value function for output characteristics of a subsistence crop in a developing economy. Within the framework of the agricultural household, with non-separable consumption and production decisions, prices reflect the implicit marginal valuation of both consumption and production attributes jointly. Variety-specific crop product farm-gate prices are used in the hedonic analysis. The findings provide guidance for future crop improvement efforts, while revealing those attributes most likely to capture premiums at the market place. Implicit premiums for attribute scarcity are also revealed. Improvements in infrastructure could partially reduce the implicit costs of transportation, leading to higher...

A Hedonic Price Analysis for the New Zealand Wine Industry: Preliminary Results AgEcon
Bicknell, Kathryn; Friesen, Lana; MacDonald, Ian.
This paper presents preliminary results from a hedonic price analysis of premium wines in New Zealand over the vintages 1994 – 2003. Implicit prices are presented for a sensory quality rating, as well as wine variety and regional reputation. Results show that the price premium associated with Michael Cooper's five-star quality rating is highly significant and increasing in magnitude over the study period. Trends in regional and varietal preferences are also explored.
