A new approach to chemical modification protocols of Aspergillus niger and sorption of lead ion by fungal species Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Rafiu Awofolu,Omotayo; Okechukwu Okonkwo,Jonathan; Roux-Van Der Merwe,Renate; Badenhorst,Jackie; Jordaan,Erika.
Biomasses of five fungi species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium austurianum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mucor arcindloides and Trichoderma reesi were evaluated for their uptake of lead ion from aqueous solution using batch systems. Both dead and live fungal biomasses were comparatively studied for their adsorption efficiencies. The effect of pH as one of the primary factors that influences sorption efficiency of metal ions in solution was also studied. Modification of the fungal biomass with the least sorption capacity was carried out using a four-step procedure. Three different modifying agents under the optimised experimental conditions were used. The percentage uptake of lead ion by fungi species ranged from: Aspergillus niger: 6.71-64.95% and...

A New Approach to Correct for Hypothetical Bias in Stated Preference Models AgEcon
Davies, Stephen P.; Loomis, John B..
Many times economists are asked to estimate the demand for new consumer goods or services for which no market data exists. Typically market researchers and economists answer this challenge using surveys that ask about intended purchases (Louviere, et al. 2000) or what has become known as stated preference (SP) data. Tying this data to revealed preference (RP), or actual behavior, has been a target in a number of studies. Simplistic calibrations have been investigated in past RP-SP studies, such as Loomis, et al. 2001. This paper offers an alternative solution that allows the magnitude of the calibration correction to vary based on Klein and Sherman's (1997) Orbit procedure. This paper extends the original Orbit procedure of Klein and Sherman by...

A New Approach to Implicit Human-Robot Interaction Using Affective Cues InTech
Pramila Rani; Nilanjan Sarkar.
An approach to human-robot interaction that can utilize implicit affective communication along with explicit communication is presented. In this work we focus on the state of anxiety as the target affective state. A set of physiological indices have been presented that showed good correlation with anxiety. The affect recognition technique infers the underlying affective state of the human from peripheral physiological signals using regression theoretic methodology. A control architecture is presented that can integrate the affective information with the operator's explicit information to achieve a versatile and natural human-robot interaction. An experiment was conducted where human-robot communication was enhanced by enabling the robot to sense human...

A new classification of the Xanthoidea sensu lato (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) based on phylogenetic analysis and traditional systematics and evaluation of all fossil Xanthoidea sensu lato Naturalis
Karasawa, H.; Schweitzer, C.E..
A phylogenetic analysis was conducted including representatives from all recognized extant and extinct families of the Xanthoidea sensu lato, resulting in one new family, Hypothalassiidae. Four xanthoid families are elevated to superfamily status, resulting in Carpilioidea, Pilumnoidoidea, Eriphioidea, Progeryonoidea, and Goneplacoidea, and numerous subfamilies are elevated to family status. The Mathildellidae is moved from the Goneplacidae to the Portunoidea. Diagnoses for all superfamilies and families discussed herein are provided, embracing characters typically used by biologists as well as readily fossilized features of the dorsal carapace, sternum, abdomen, and chelipeds. All genera known from the fossil record at one time referred to the Xanthidae...

A New Heterophyllous Spermacoce Species (Rubiaceae) from the Marungu Highlands, Democratic Republic of the Congo Naturalis
Dessein, S.; Robbrecht, E.; Smets, E..
Spermacoce heteromorpha Dessein (Rubiaceae, Spermacoceae) is newly described and illustrated. It grows on the Marungu highlands of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R. Congo) at altitudes of 1800 to 1900 m. The species resembles the Tanzanian Spermacoce taylorii Verdcourt, from which it mainly differs in having terminal inflorescences, only slightly exserted anthers, and densely pubescent stems. Moreover, Spermacoce heteromorpha features marked heterophylly, with long leaves at the plant’s base and much shorter cauline leaves, a type of heterophylly rarely observed in Spermacoce or in the Rubiaceae as a whole. The finding of this species exemplifies the unique floristic richness of this underexplored part of D.R. Congo.

A new hypothesis to explain the coexistence of n species in the presence of a single resource Inra
Lobry, C.; Harmand, J..

A new method: measurement of microleakage volume using human, dog and bovine permanent teeth Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Yavuz,Izzet; Aydin,Haluk; Ulku,Refik; Kaya,Sadullah; Tumen,Caner.
This study investigates the feasibility of a different new approach to determining the microleakage volume associated with dental restorations (Class V cavity restorated with glass ionomer cement + high copper amalgam) and the relative marginal adaptation deficiency of dog, bovine and human permanent teeth in in vitro conditions. Also researched is the appropriateness of using dog and bovine teeth in in vitro studies rather than human teeth. Our method utilizes the molecular adsorption characteristics of methylene blue. Within the framework of this study, 60 permanent teeth (20 human, 20 dogs and 20 bovine) were used. These groups were evaluated statistically, of which indicated no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05). It was also concluded...

A new name, and notes on extra-floral nectaries, in Lagunaria (Malvaceae, Malvoideae) Naturalis
Craven, L.A.; Miller, C.; White, R.G..
The Australian taxon Lagunaria patersonius subsp. bracteata is raised to specific rank as L. queenslandica, based upon morphological and ecological dissimilarities between it and the autonymic taxon, L. patersonius subsp. patersonius. The latter taxon occurs on the southwest Pacific Ocean islands, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. Extra-floral nectaries are reported in Lagunaria, apparently for the first time, and contrasted with those occurring in species of Hibiscus sections Bombicella and Furcaria.
