Parameterization of MRP for Supply Planning Under Lead Time Uncertainties InTech
A. Dolgui; F. Hnaien; A. Louly; H. Marian.
We studied an MRP parameterization problem for assembly systems under component lead time uncertainties. This problem of inventory control and production planning under uncertainties is crucial for industry. Most publications are devoted to customer demand uncertainties. In contrast, lead time uncertainties seem not be sufficiently studied, in particular, for the control of component inventories for assembly systems with random component procurement times (lead times). Nevertheless, many of industrial applications exist where the component lead times are random. For the case of assembly systems with random lead times and a random demand, if the demand and component lead times are independent random variables, the following decomposition can be made. The...

Robotic Long Bone Fracture Reduction InTech
A. E. Graham; S. Q. Xie; K. C. Aw; W. L. Xu; S. Mukherjee.
This research into a medical robot for realigning fractured bones aims to develop the interface, robot, and database technologies to improve the working situation for users and outcome for recipients. Compared with other approaches to fracture reduction, the system being developed here has a number of novel features. The geometric modeling has been effective in allowing a surgeon to visualize the fractured bone and has not been reported elsewhere for fracture reduction to the authors knowledge. By displaying the images to users in this form any mental strain they would face from reconstructing images can be removed. In addition to this, modeling of the forces during reduction has provided a means to determine the requirement for a robotic device....

Modeling Land-Use Decision Behavior with Bayesian Belief Networks Ecology and Society
Aalders, Inge; Macaulay Institute; j.morrice@macaulay.ac.uk.
The ability to incorporate and manage the different drivers of land-use change in a modeling process is one of the key challenges because they are complex and are both quantitative and qualitative in nature. This paper uses Bayesian belief networks (BBN) to incorporate characteristics of land managers in the modeling process and to enhance our understanding of land-use change based on the limited and disparate sources of information. One of the two models based on spatial data represented land managers in the form of a quantitative variable, the area of individual holdings, whereas the other model included qualitative data from a survey of land managers. Random samples from the spatial data provided evidence of the relationship between the different...

AARESTRUP, J. R.; KARAM, D.; CORRÊA, E. J. A.; FERNANDES, G. W..

AARESTRUP, J. R.; KARAM, D.; FERNANDES, G. W.; CORRÊA, E. J. A..
As características analisadas variaram segundo a dose utilizada do herbicida.

Successful use of axonal transport for drug delivery by synthetic molecular vehicles Nature Precedings
Aaron G. Filler; Garth Whiteside; Mark Bacon; Martyn Frederickson; Franklyn A. Howe; Miri K. Rabinowitz; Alan J. Sokoloff; Terrence Deacon; Chris Abell; Raj Munglani; John R. Griffiths; B. Anthony Bell; Andrew Lever.
We report the use of axonal transport to achieve intraneural drug delivery. We constructed a novel tripartite complex of an axonal transport facilitator conjugated to a linker molecule bearing up to a hundred reversibly attached drug molecules. The complex efficiently enters nerve terminals after intramuscular or intradermal administration and travels within axonal processes to neuron cell bodies. The tripartite agent provided 100-fold amplification of saturable neural uptake events, delivering multiple drug molecules per complex. _In vivo_, analgesic drug delivery to systemic and to non-targeted neural tissues was greatly reduced compared to existing routes of administration, thus exemplifying the possibility of specific nerve root targeting and...

Abarnou, Alain; Duchemin, Jean.
This study on the "distribution and future of persistent contaminants in coastal ecosystems, comparison between the western Channel and the eastern Channel" was carried out by the Ifremer for the Water Agency of Seine-Normandie. It provides information on the level of relatively well-known and regulated contaminants (cadmium, mercury, lead, BPC, dioxins, PAH) in sea products, as well as on that of less systematically recorded substances (silver, copper, nickel, zinc, polybrominated biphenyls, ethers, alkylphenols, phtalats). The Lower-Norman coast, from the Seine estuary and the Mont Saint-Michel, is particularly interesting for this study since this limited geographic area is home to the most extreme levels of contamination recorded along the entire...

Molecular characterization and expression analysis of the Rab GTPase family in Vitis vinifera reveal the specific expression of a VvRabA protein Inra
Abbal, P.; Pradal, M.; Muniz, L.; Sauvage, F.X.; Chatelet, P.; Ueda, T.; Tesniere, C..
As a first step to investigate whether Rab GTPases are involved in grape berry development, the Vitis vinifera EST and gene databases were searched for members of the VvRab family. The grapevine genome was found to contain 26 VvRabs that could be distributed into all of the eight groups described in the literature for model plants. Genetic mapping was successfully performed; VvRabs were mostly located on independent chromosomes, apart from eight that were located on the as yet unassigned portions of the genome clustered in the ChrUn_Random chromosome. Conserved and divergent regions between VvRab protein sequences were identified. Transcript expression of 11 VvRabs was analysed by real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Except for VvRabA5b, transcript expression...

On Optimal British Columbia Log Export Policy: An Application of Trade Theory AgEcon
Abbott, Brant.
The log export policy suggestion by Dumont and Wright (2006) is critically assessed in an effort to determine if it is based on economic efficiency. The optimal log export policy for British Columbia is derived using two different models. The first model assumes that B.C. is a small open economy, and the second is a two country model that provides B.C. the opportunity to improve its terms of trade. In both cases it is shown that an optimal log export tax when a fixed lumber export tax exists can be characterized as a problem of second best. In that scenario the optimal log export policy is a positive export tax in both models. In the second model a positive export tax is also optimal when there is no lumber export tax, but it is smaller than when the...

An Economic Analysis of Mountain Pine Beetle Impact in a Global Context AgEcon
Abbott, Brant; Stennes, Brad; van Kooten, G. Cornelis.
The economic effects of the mountain pine beetle outbreak in British Columbia are simulated using a multi-region spatial price equilibrium model coupled with a stochastic dynamic updating procedure. The simulation captures expected changes in the B.C. timber supply, growth of plantation forests in the southern hemisphere and an escalating Russian log export tax. The results indicate lumber and log prices will rise in B.C., offsetting some of the economic loss to timber producers. However, on net producers in the B.C. forest industry will experience a decrease in economic surplus.

Rent Dissipation in Chartered Recreational Fishing: Inside the Black Box AgEcon
Abbott, Joshua K.; Wilen, James E..
A canvass of the resource economics literature of the last thirty years yields a limited number of applications of economic theory to the problems of recreational fishing, especially compared to the depth of contributions to commercial fisheries over this era. This neglect may be linked to the relatively short shrift given to the control of recreational fisheries (relative to commercial fisheries) by fisheries managers in the past. This asymmetry may be justified when recreational takes are sufficiently small to be negligible for the purposes of stock management. However, it has become increasingly clear that recreational mortality, far from being insignificant, is often comparable to or greater than the commercial mortality for many species (Coleman, et...
