A large phylogeny of turtles (Testudines) using molecular data Naturalis
Guillon, J.-M.; Guéry, L.; Hulin, V.; Girondot, M..
Turtles (Testudines) form a monophyletic group with a highly distinctive body plan. The taxonomy and phylogeny of turtles are still under discussion, at least for some clades. Whereas in most previous studies, only a few species or genera were considered, we here use an extensive compilation of DNA sequences from nuclear and mitochondrial genes for more than two thirds of the total number of turtle species to infer a large phylogeny for this taxon. Our results enable us to discuss previous hypotheses on species phylogeny or taxonomy. We are thus able to discriminate between competing hypotheses and to suggest taxonomical modifications. Finally, we pinpoint the remaining ambiguities for this phylogeny and the species for which new sequences should be...

A light- and electron microscopic study of primordial germ cells in the zebra fish (Danio rerio) Biol. Res.
Deniz Koç,Nazan; Yüce,Rikap.
In sexually reproducing organisms, primordial germ cells (PGCs) give rise to the cells of the germ line, the gametes. In many animals, PGCs are set apart from somatic cells early during embryogenesis. This study explores the origin of primordial germ cells (PGCs) of the zebra fish and examines their morphology during early development (1st day-15th day). PGCs were selectively stained by the alkaline phosphatase histochemical reaction and viewed by light and electron microscopy from the time they are first detectable in the yolk sac endoderm. PGCs occurred in the subendodermal space on the syncytial periblast; differing from the surrounding endodermal cells. Later the PGCs moved to between the blastoderm and yolk sac and transferred to the dorsal mesentery...

A likely role for a novel PH-domain containing protein, PEPP2, in connecting membrane and cytoskeleton Biocell
Zou,Yi; Zhong,Wenping.
PH domains (pleckstrin homology) are well known to bind membrane phosphoinositides with different specificities and direct PH domain-containing proteins to discrete subcellular apartments with assistances of alternative binding partners. PH domain-containing proteins are found to be involved in a wide range of cellular events, including signalling, cytoskeleton rearrangement and vesicular trafficking. Here we showed that a novel PH domain-containing protein, PEPP2, displayed moderate phosphoinositide binding specificity. Full length PEPP2 associated with both plasma membrane and microtubules. The membrane-associated PEPP2 nucleated at cell-cell contacts and the leading edge of migrating cells. Overexpression of PEPP2 increased membrane microviscosity,...

A matter of trust: How trust influences organic consumption Organic Eprints
Smed, Sinne; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Kærgård, N.; Daugbjerg, Carsten.
This paper shows that general trust in the organic label as well as perceived positive health effects of eating organic products have positive causal effects on actual organic consumption. The data used is panel data for 830 households reporting actual purchases together with responding to a comprehensive concerning questionnaire attitudes in 2002 and 2007. The paper also shows that perceived positive environmental effects and perceived better animal welfare related to organic production have no significant effect on actual behaviour, whereas concern for artificial additives and low price sensitivity increases the organic budget share. Surprisingly enough, households who worry about GMO or pesticides do not seem to have a higher propensity to purchase...

A meta-analysis of the response of calorie demand to income changes AgEcon
Ogundari, Kolawole; Abdulai, Awudu.
Over the past three decades, several studies have analyzed the response of calorie intake to income with varying and inconclusive results. This paper review these studies and employs meta-analysis to examine the potential bias in the calorie-income elasticity, as well as the impact of specific study attributes on these elasticities reported in the empirical literature. A total of 40 studies which yielded 99 estimated elasticities were considered. The results show the presence of publication (reporting) selection bias in the reported elasticities. Besides, the estimates revealed evidence of positive and significant empirical effect of income on calorie intake from all the studies that goes beyond publication bias. Study attributes such as ranking of the...

A microbial community analysis of the octocoral Eunicea fusca Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Duque-Alarcón,Angela; Santiago-Vázquez,Lory Z; Kerr,Russell G.
While there is a significant and growing body of knowledge describing the microbial communities of marine invertebrates such as sponges, there are very few such studies focused on octocorals. The octocoral Eunicea fusca is common on reefs in various regions of the Caribbean and has been the subject of natural product investigations. As part of an effort to describe the microbial community associated with octocorals, a culture-independent analysis of the bacterial community of E. fusca was conducted. Specifically, a 16S rDNA clone library analysis was performed to provide baseline data. A total of 40 bacteria members from 11 groups were found. In general, Proteobacteria were the dominant group with a total of 24 species and α-Proteobacteria...

A molecular marker approach using intron flanking EST-PCR to map candidate genes in peach (Prunus persica) Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Diez-de-Medina,Sergio; Silva,Herman.
In Peach (Prunus persica) several physiological changes, such as woolliness, triggered by chilling injury are involved in major production losses due to cold storage of the fruits during shipping. Additionally, the low level of polymorphisms among peach varieties is an important limitation in the search for new molecular markers that could be associated with economically important traits. Therefore, a functional approach was employed to associate candidate genes with an informative marker in peach. The data was obtained from the results of an in silico analysis of four different cold peach treatments. Thirty two candidate genes were selected that were aligned against Arabidopsis thaliana genomic sequences to design intron-flanking EST-PCR markers. These...

A Morphological and Biometric Study of the Infraorbital Foramen (E2 - Sibai Point) in Adult Skulls International Journal of Morphology
Oliveira Junior,E. M. de; Moreira,R. T; Neto,B. L; Silva,C. M. F. da; Lima,F. J. C.
The objective of this work was to study the morphology and biometry of the infraorbital foramen (FIO), variations in its shape, size and number as well as to obtain measurements of its location. 60 dry skulls were analyzed. The test of Qui-quadrant and the T Test were used in measurements with a 5% significance. On the right side, the FIO was measured at a distance of 6.49(±1.68) mm from the lower, 39.65(±3) mm from the upper, 17.7(±2.97) mm from the medial and 20.46(±2.9) mm from the lateral margin of the orbit; its pear-shaped opening distance was 13.67(±2.17) mm. On the left side, the distance of the FIO to the lower margin of the orbit was 6.52(±1.82) mm; to the upper margin was 39.9(±2.62) mm and to the lateral and medial margin were 17.93(±2.58) mm...
