Background: The reannotation of genomes already on file is a new approach to discovering new genetic elements and to make the genomes more descriptive and current with relevant features regarding the organism?s lifestyle. Within this approach, the present study aimed to reannotate the genome of the Gram-positive human pathogen Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which causes diphtheria. The deposit of massive amounts of information linked to other species of the genus Corynebacterium has facilitated the updating of the genomic interpretation of this microorganism. Additionally, the emergence of invasive disease by nontoxigenic strains of C. diphtheriae and the reemergence of diphtheria in partially immunized populations have given impetus to new studies in...

Reassessing Vermisporium (Amphisphaeriaceae), a genus of foliar pathogens of eucalypts Naturalis
Barber, P.A.; Crous, P.W.; Groenewald, J.Z.; Pascoe, I.G.; Keane, P..
The genus Vermisporium presently accommodates 13 species, 11 of which are associated with leaf spots of eucalypts in the Southern Hemisphere. Vermisporium is chiefly distinguished from Seimatosporium (Amphisphaeriaceae) on the basis of a short exogenous basal appendage, and the absence of a recognisable apical appendage. Due to the increasing importance of these species in native forests, and confusion pertaining to their taxonomy, a revision of the genus was undertaken based on fresh collections and dried herbarium specimens. Results from DNA sequence data analyses of the nrDNA-ITS and 28S nrRNA genes for species of Vermisporium indicated the genus to be a synonym of Seimatosporium. New combinations are introduced in Seimatosporium for several species: S....

Receiving incorrect information is costly: Diffusion and accuracy of market information among farmers in northern Ghana AgEcon
Zanello, Giacomo; Shankar, Bhavani; Srinivasan, Chittur S..
The recent adoption of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs, namely mobile phones and radios) in rural areas of Sub- Saharan Africa has brought new evidence that an updated and reliable flow of information can have direct benefits for farmers' welfare. However, if correct market information can benefit the users, incorrect information can be costly. In this study we explore the diffusion (quantity) and the accuracy (quality) of price information among farmers in northern Ghana, with a focus on the role of ICTs.

Recent advances in observing mesoscale ocean dynamics with satellite altimetry ArchiMer
Morrow, Rosemary; Le Traon, Pierre-yves.
The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 18 year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quantify the previously unknown seasonal and interannual variations in eddy kinetic energy and eddy heat and salt transports, and investigate their causes. Eddy tracking techniques have allowed us to monitor their propagation pathways, to bring to light the meridional divergence of cyclones and anticyclones, and to question the role of Rossby waves versus non-linear...

Recent developments in microbial oils production: a possible alternative to vegetable oils for biodiesel without competition with human food? BABT
Christophe,Gwendoline; Kumar,Vinod; Nouaille,Régis; Gaudet,Geneviève; Fontanille,Pierre; Pandey,Ashok; Soccol,Carlos Ricardo; Larroche,Christian.
Since centuries vegetable oils are consumed as human food but it also finds applications in biodiesel production which is attracting more attention. But due to being in competition with food it could not be sustainable and leads the need to search for alternative. Nowdays microbes-derived oils (single cell oils) seem to be alternatives for biodiesel production due to their similar composition to that of vegetable oils. However, the cold flow properties of the biodiesel produced from microbial oils are unacceptable and have to be modified by an efficient transesterification. Glycerol which is by product of transesterification can be valorised into some more useful products so that it can also be utilised along with biodiesel to simplify the downstream...

Recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) biofilters: focusing on bacterial communities complexity and activity ArchiMer
Interdonato, Filippo.
This research has been carried out in order to better understand the relationships between bacterial communities, established within the biofilter of a recirculating aquaculture system, and the influence exerted by forcing factors on the system itself. The work was divided into three main objectives that were aimed at studying: - the composition of the metabolically active bacterial fraction through the construction of cDNA clone libraries and the application of fingerprinting techniques (e.g., the T-RFLP); - the effect of particulate organic carbon on both the nitrification process and the microbial communities in different types of biological filters; - the effect of a moderate increase in the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), through the injection of...

Reclutamiento de corales pétreos en arrecifes coralinos a diferentes distancias de fuentes de contaminación en La Habana, Cuba OceanDocs
Alcolado Prieto, P.; Caballero Aragón, H.; Alcolado, P. M.; Lopeztegui Castillo, A..
The effect of pollution on coral recruitment has been insufficiently studied. This research deals with coral recruitment in coastal areas and aimed to determine the variations of density and dominant species of corals recruits in sites at different distances from pollution sources. The composition and structure of stony coral (scleractinian and milleporids) recruit associations were characterized in the fringing reef of Western Havana, Cuba. This reef is influenced by urban pollution from the Almendares River and a sewage outlet located at its mouth. Four sites were sampled on the upper fore reef escarpment at 10m deep every three months between July 2007 and May 2008. A 25cm side quadrat was used to determine the density and taxonomic composition of...

Reclutamiento del camarón rosado Farfantepenaeus notialis (Decapoda: Penaeidae) en el golfo de Ana María, Cuba. OceanDocs
Giménez Hurtado, E.; Alzugaray Martínez, R.; Garcés Rodríguez, Y.; Delgado Miranda, G.; Ventura Flores, A..

Recombinant vaccines and the development of new vaccine strategies BJMBR
Nascimento,I.P.; Leite,L.C.C..
Vaccines were initially developed on an empirical basis, relying mostly on attenuation or inactivation of pathogens. Advances in immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics, and proteomics have added new perspectives to the vaccinology field. The use of recombinant proteins allows the targeting of immune responses focused against few protective antigens. There are a variety of expression systems with different advantages, allowing the production of large quantities of proteins depending on the required characteristics. Live recombinant bacteria or viral vectors effectively stimulate the immune system as in natural infections and have intrinsic adjuvant properties. DNA vaccines, which consist of non-replicating plasmids, can induce strong...
