A SAS macro for computing statistical tests for two-way table and stability indices of nonparametric method from genotype-by-environment interaction Agronomy
Akbarpour, Omid Ali; Dehghani, Hamid; Sorkhi-Lalelo, Bezad; Kang, Manjit Singh.
Genotype-by-environment interaction refers to the differential response of different genotypes across different environments. This is a general phenomenon in all living organisms and always has been one of the main challenges for biologists and plant breeders. The nonparametric methods based on the rank of original data have been suggested as the alternative methods after parametric methods to analyze data without perquisite assumptions needed for common analysis of variance. But, the lack of statistical software or package, especially for analysis of two-way data, is one of the main reasons that plant breeders have not greatly used the nonparametric methods. Here, we have explained the nonparametric methods and presented a comprehensive two-parts SAS...

A semi-automated Raman micro-spectroscopy method for morphological and chemical characterizations of microplastic litter ArchiMer
Frere, L.; Paul-pont, I.; Moreau, Julien; Soudant, P.; Lambert, C.; Huvet, Arnaud; Rinnert, Emmanuel.
Every step of microplastic analysis (collection, extraction and characterization) is time-consuming, representing an obstacle to the implementation of large scale monitoring. This study proposes a semi-automated Raman micro-spectroscopy method coupled to static image analysis that allows the screening of a large quantity of microplastic in a time-effective way with minimal machine operator intervention. The method was validated using 103 particles collected at the sea surface spiked with 7 standard plastics: morphological and chemical characterization of particles was performed in < 3 h. The method was then applied to a larger environmental sample (n = 962 particles). The identification rate was 75% and significantly decreased as a function of particle...

A silo for suppressing the population of Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera, Bostrichidae) in stored wheat. Repositório Alice
VARGAS, A. N.; SOUZA, D. W. F. de; FREITAS, A. M.; LORINI, I.; VAL, J. B. R. do.
The present study showed how the construction of a grain silo prototype can be used to increase the mortality rate of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.). The silo prototype is a bin of small dimensions, adequate for laboratory environments, equipped with controlled temperature for the mass of wheat stored therein. Adjusting the temperature and the time of exposure in the bin may be an effective tool to eliminate R. dominica. .

Feed efficiency and carcass characteristics are late-measured traits. The detection of molecular markers associated with them can help breeding programs to select animals early in life, and to predict breeding values with high accuracy. The objective of this study was to identify polymorphisms in the functional and positional candidate gene NEUROD1 (neurogenic differentiation 1), and investigate their associations with production traits in reference families of Nelore cattle. A total of 585 steers were used, from 34 sires chosen to represent the variability of this breed. By sequencing 14 animals with extreme residual feed intake (RFI) values, seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in NEUROD1 were identified. The investigation of marker effects on...

According to the U.S. National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), federal action to manipulate habitat for species conservation requires an environmental impact statement, which should integrate natural, physical, economic, and social sciences in planning and decision making. Nonetheless, most impact assessments focus disproportionately on physical or ecological impacts rather than integrating ecological and socioeconomic components. We developed a participatory social-ecological impact assessment (SEIA) that addresses the requirements of NEPA and integrates social and ecological concepts for impact assessments. We cooperated with the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho, USA on a project designed to restore habitat for the Greater Sage-Grouse...

A sociedade brasileira de leptospirose – Está na hora? MV&Z
Mcbride, A. J. A..

A Statistical Algorithm for Estimating Chlorophyll Concentration in the New Caledonian Lagoon ArchiMer
Wattelez, Guillaume; Dupouy, Cecile; Mangeas, Morgan; Lefevre, Jerome; Touraivane,; Frouin, Robert.
Spatial and temporal dynamics of phytoplankton biomass and water turbidity can provide crucial information about the function, health and vulnerability of lagoon ecosystems (coral reefs, sea grasses, etc.). A statistical algorithm is proposed to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration ([chl-a]) in optically complex waters of the New Caledonian lagoon from MODIS-derived remote-sensing reflectance (R-rs). The algorithm is developed via supervised learning on match-ups gathered from 2002 to 2010. The best performance is obtained by combining two models, selected according to the ratio of R-rs in spectral bands centered on 488 and 555 nm: a log-linear model for low [chl-a] (AFLC) and a support vector machine (SVM) model or a classic model (OC3) for high [chl-a]....

A statistical approach for assessing the heterogeneity of Hass avocados subjected to different postharvest abiotic stresses Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fuentealba,Claudia; Pedreschi,Romina; Hernández,Ignacia; Saavedra,Jorge.
C. Fuentealba, R. Pedreschi, I. Hernández, and J. Saavedra. 2016. A statistical approach for assessing the heterogeneity of Hass avocados subjected to different postharvest abiotic stresses. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):356-365. Hass avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is marketed worldwide. Due to its complex physiology, a wide variability in postharvest ripening can be observed, i.e., heterogeneity in the number of days to reach edible ripeness. There is a need for a simple and objective method for evaluating the efficacy of postharvest treatments in the reduction of this postharvest ripening heterogeneity given the high demand of import countries for consistent quality and product homogeneity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the appropriateness of...

A surface plasmon resonance system for the underwater detection of domoic acid ArchiMer
Colas, Florent; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Laurent, Sebastien; Litaker, Richard W.; Rinnert, Emmanuel; Le Gall, Erwan; Lunven, Michel; Delauney, Laurent; Compère, Chantal.
Over the past decade Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) techniques have been applied to the measurement of numerous analytes. In this article, an SPR biosensor system deployed from an oceanographic vessel was used to measure dissolved domoic acid (DA), a common and harmful phycotoxin produced by certain microalgae species belonging to the genus Pseudo-nitzschia. During the biosensor deployment, concentrations of Pseudo-nitzschia cells were very low over the study area and measured DA concentrations were below detection. However, the in situ operational detection limit of the system was established using calibrated seawater solutions spiked with DA. The system could detect the toxin at concentrations as low as 0.1 ng mL−1 and presented a linear dynamic range...
