A Lipid-walled microcapsule diet as co-feed for early feeding the Osphronemus gourami (Lacepede) larvae Animal Sciences
Sukardi, Purnama; Hana, Hana; Prayogo, Norman Arie; sulistyo, Isdy; Soedibya, Petrus Hary Tjahja; Harisam, Taufan; Winanto, Tjahyo.
The effects of microcapsule diet as co-feeding for early weaning phase of gourami larvae where evaluated in terms of ingestion rate of microcapsule, growth, and survival rate. The availability of tubifex worms as natural food is uncertain and can introduce pathogens to fish culture from outside environment. Therefore, the attempt to replace or substitute this natural food continues in order to reduce the level of dependence. This research used Complete Randomized Designed (CRD) with four treatments based on a different protocol feeding management. Gourami larvae should be started with the co-feeding on day 12 until day 17 and they are more receptive to microcapsule diets after day 17. The ingestion rate of microcapsule which consumed by the larvae during...

A method for high frequency underway N 2 fixation measurements: Flow-through incubation Acetylene Reduction Assays by Cavity ring down laser Absorption Spectroscopy (FARACAS) ArchiMer
Cassar, Nicolas; Tang, Weiyi; Gabathuler, Hans; Huang, Kuan.
Because of the difficulty in resolving the large variability of N2 fixation with current methods which rely on discrete sampling, the development of new methods for high resolution measurements is highly desirable. We present a new method for high-frequency measurements of aquatic N2 fixation by continuous flow-through incubations and spectral monitoring of the acetylene (C2H2, a substrate analog for N2) reduction to ethylene (C2H4). In this method, named “Flow-through incubation Acetylene Reduction Assays by Cavity ring-down laser Absorption Spectros-copy” (FARACAS), dissolved C2H2 is continuously admixed with seawater upstream of a continuous-flow stirred-tank reactor (CFSR) in which C2H2 reduction takes place. Downstream of the flow-through incubator,...

A method to address the non-random spatial distribution of on-board observer data to map landings and discards ArchiMer
Pointin, Fabien; Cornou, Anne-sophie; Prod'Homme, Romain; Taupin, Nicolas; Rochet, Marie-joelle.
he Landing Obligation is legislation meant to gradually reduce discards in European fisheries from 2015. Identifying spatial patterns of landings and discards is an important element in mitigating the effects of this legislation on fishing activity. On-board observer data have already been used to address this issue based on models involving statistical assumptions in relation to the non-random spatial distribution of data, which may cause errors in the parameters of interest. An alternative non-model-based mapping method using nested grids is applied to explore the spatial distribution of landings and discards for two French fishing métiers in the Celtic Sea and western English Channel from 2011 to 2016. The grid fineness and the estimate precision are...

A model perspective on the dynamics of the shadow zone of the eastern tropical North Atlantic - Part 1: the poleward slope currents along West Africa ArchiMer
Kounta, Lala; Capet, Xavier; Jouanno, Julien; Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Sow, Bamol; Gaye, Amadou Thierno.
The West African seaboard is one of the upwelling sectors that has received the least attention, and in situ observations relevant to its dynamics are particularly scarce. The current system in this sector is not well known and understood, e.g., in terms of seasonal variability, across-shore structure, and forcing processes. This knowledge gap is addressed in two studies that analyze the mean seasonal cycle of an eddy-permitting numerical simulation of the tropical Atlantic. Part 1 is concerned with the circulation over the West African continental slope at the southernmost reach of the Canary Current system, between similar to 8 and 20 degrees N. The focus is on the depth range most directly implicated in the wind-driven circulation (offshore and coastal...

A multidisciplinary approach to the spatial dimension in ecosystem-based fisheries management ArchiMer
Le Floc'H, Pascal; Bertignac, Michel; Curtil, Olivier; Macher, Claire; Mariat-roy, Emilie; Paulet, Yves-marie.
This study considers how to reconcile different spatial scales to find the best common denominator to be used as an ecosystem-based management unit. For this, two fishery production zones differing ecologically, economically, legally and institutionally were investigated. The first case study is located within French territorial waters, in a MPA created in 2007- the Parc Naturel Marin d'Iroise (PNMI). The second case study, the Bay of Biscay, covers both territorial waters and the French exclusive economic zone. The paper adopts a multidisciplinary approach. Relevant questions concern how marine space is shared between exploited species and fishing fleets, especially the spatial mobility strategies they employ. An assessment of the institutional system...

A multimetric-index approach using fisheries data to assess fish assemblage structure in relation to salinity gradient in a tropical West African estuary ArchiMer
Kantoussan, J.; Ecoutin, J. M.; Lae, R.; Thiaw, O. T.; Tito De Morais, L..
This study examines the effects of increasing salinity on fish assemblage structure in the Casamance Estuary, Senegal. using a series of indices. The study data were derived from commercial fishery surveys conducted between April and July 2005. Analysis of within-trophic-group diversity in the Casamance Estuary shows a significant drop in the diversity of apex predators in the upper. more saline reaches of the estuary. By contrast. primary consumers adapted well to salinity changes and exhibited higher taxonomic diversity in the upper reaches of the estuary than in the lower reaches. The findings also indicate decreases in average sizes of the landed species and the trophic levels among fish catches in the direction of the upper reaches. However, the catch...

A Nematode of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge Hydrothermal Vents Harbors a Possible Symbiotic Relationship ArchiMer
Bellec, Laure; Cambon-bonavita, Marie-anne; Cueff-gauchard, Valerie; Durand, Lucile; Gayet, Nicolas; Zeppilli, Daniela.
Deep-sea hydrothermal vent meiofauna have been the focus of recent research and the discovery of an abundant well-adapted free-living marine nematode on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge offers new perspectives on adaptations to the vent environment. Indeed, knowledge concerning biological interactions of microbes and meiofauna in marine extreme environments is scarce, especially for nematodes. In this study, we used microscopic observations [fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)] and metabarcoding of 16S rRNA to characterize the bacterial community of the nematode species Oncholaimus dyvae, an overlooked but ecologically important vent organism. Detection of bacteria in the buccal cavity and on the cuticle (SEM) and...

A New Coupled Ocean-Waves-Atmosphere Model Designed for Tropical Storm Studies: Example of Tropical Cyclone Bejisa (2013-2014) in the South-West Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Pianezze, J.; Barthe, C.; Bielli, S.; Tulet, P.; Jullien, Swen; Cambon, Gildas; Bousquet, O.; Claeys, M.; Cordier, E..
Ocean-Waves-Atmosphere (OWA) exchanges are not well represented in current Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems, which can lead to large uncertainties in tropical cyclone track and intensity forecasts. In order to explore and better understand the impact of OWA interactions on tropical cyclone modelling, a fully coupled OWA system based on the atmospheric model Meso-NH, the oceanic model CROCO and the wave model WW3 and called MSWC was designed and applied to the case of tropical cyclone Bejisa (2013-2014). The fully coupled OWA simulation shows good agreement with the literature and available observations. In particular, simulated significant wave height is within 30 cm of measurements made with buoys and altimeters. Short-term (< 2 days)...

A new genus, Desertispora, and a new species, Diversispora sabulosa, in the family Diversisporaceae (order Diversisporales, subphylum Glomeromycotina) Organic Eprints
Symanczik, Sarah; Al-Yahya'ei, Mohamed N.; Kozłowska, Anna; Ryszka, Przemysław; Błaszkowski, Janusz.
Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the SSU–ITS–LSU nrDNA segment and the RPB1 gene showed that the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus originally described as Diversispora omaniana does not belong to the genus Diversispora, but represents a separate clade at the rank of genus in the family Diversisporaceae of the order Diversisporales. The closest natural relatives of the fungus proved to be species of the genera Corymbiglomus and Redeckera. Consequently, the new genus was named Desertispora, and Di. omaniana was renamed De. omaniana comb. nov. In addition, the morphological and histochemical features of spores and mycorrhizal structures of a new Diversispora sp., Di. sabulosa, were described and the closest relatives of the species were determined based on...

A new tracking algorithm for sea ice age distribution estimation ArchiMer
Korosov, Anton; Rampal, Pierre; Pedersen, Leif Toudal; Saldo, Roberto; Ye, Yufang; Heygster, Georg; Lavergne, Thomas; Aaboe, Signe; Girard Ardhuin, Fanny.
A new algorithm for estimating sea ice age (SIA) distribution based on the Eulerian advection scheme is presented. The advection scheme accounts for the observed divergence or convergence and freezing or melting of sea ice and predicts consequent generation or loss of new ice. The algorithm uses daily gridded sea ice drift and sea ice concentration products from the Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility. The major advantage of the new algorithm is the ability to generate individual ice age fractions in each pixel of the output product or, in other words, to provide a frequency distribution of the ice age allowing to apply mean, median, weighted average or other statistical measures. Comparison with the National Snow and Ice Data Center SIA...
