A re-evaluation of Neotropical Junghuhnia s.lat. (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) based on morphological and multigene analyses Naturalis
Westphalen, M.C.; Rajchenberg, M.; Tomšovský, M.; Gugliotta, A.M..
Junghuhnia is a genus of polypores traditionally characterised by a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae and presence of encrusted skeletocystidia. However, recent molecular studies revealed that Junghuhnia is polyphyletic and most of the species cluster with Steccherinum, a morphologically similar genus separated only by a hydnoid hymenophore. In the Neotropics, very little is known about the evolutionary relationships of Junghuhnia s.lat. taxa and very few species have been included in molecular studies. In order to test the proper phylogenetic placement of Neotropical species of this group, morphological and molecular analyses were carried out. Specimens were collected in Brazil and used for DNA sequence analyses of the internal...

A review of potential impacts of submarine power cables on the marine environment: Knowledge gaps, recommendations and future directions ArchiMer
Taormina, Bastien; Bald, Juan; Want, Andrew; Thouzeau, Gerard; Lejart, Morgane; Desroy, Nicolas; Carlier, Antoine.
Submarine power cables (SPC) have been in use since the mid-19th century, but environmental concerns about them are much more recent. With the development of marine renewable energy technologies, it is vital to understand their potential impacts. The commissioning of SPC may temporarily or permanently impact the marine environment through habitat damage or loss, noise, chemical pollution, heat and electromagnetic field emissions, risk of entanglement, introduction of artificial substrates, and the creation of reserve effects. While growing numbers of scientific publications focus on impacts of the marine energy harnessing devices, data on impacts of associated power connections such as SPC are scarce and knowledge gaps persist. The present study (1)...

A..
Silicon (Si) is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust and is an important nutrient in the ocean. The global Si cycle plays a critical role in regulating primary productivity and carbon cycling on the continents and in the oceans. Development of the analytical tools used to study the sources, sinks, and fluxes of the global Si cycle (e.g., elemental and stable isotope ratio data for Ge, Si, Zn, etc.) have recently led to major advances in our understanding of the mechanisms and processes that constrain the cycling of Si in the modern environment and in the past. Here, we provide background on the geochemical tools that are available for studying the Si cycle and highlight our current understanding of the marine, freshwater and terrestrial...

A review on the use of hormones in fish farming: analytical methods to determine their residues. Repositório Alice
HOGA, C. A.; ALMEIDA, F. L.; REYES, F. G. R..
Hormones are used in fish farming to increase fish production when one sex of a species has the capacity to grow bigger and faster than the other sex. The technique to increase fish production based on sexual dimorphism mostly uses estrogens and androgens. These chemicals must be handled carefully to ensure environmental, biological and food safety, since they can contaminate the environment and promote changes in the endocrine system inducing adverse effects on the consumer health. Another important issue is the reliability of the analytical methods used to identify and/or quantify hormone residues in the meat of treated fish. Therefore, the aim of this review is to bring into view the use of hormones in fish farming, the possible impacts of this practice...

A statistical approach to relationships between fluid emissions and faults: The Sea of Marmara case ArchiMer
Henry, P.; Grall, Celine; Kende, J.; Viseur, S.; Ozeren, M. S.; Sengor, A. M. C.; Dupre, Stephanie; Scalabrin, Carla; Geli, Louis.
The Sea of Marmara is traversed by the North Anatolian Fault system and also presents abundant emission sites of methane gas into the water column. In order to assess the spatial relationship between gas emissions and active faults, the distribution of distances between gas emission sites and the nearest fault is calculated and compared with the distribution of distances between a uniform random distribution of points (Poisson process representing the null hypothesis of an absence of relationship between gas emissions and faults) and the nearest fault. Interestingly, the distance distribution for the Poisson process is nearly exponential, indicating that the fault map does not have a characteristic scale other than that representing the intensity of the...

A study of stakeholder views to shape a communication strategy for GMO in Brazil. Repositório Alice
CAPALBO, D. M. F.; ARANTES, O. M. N.; MAIA, A. G.; BORGES, I. C.; SILVEIRA, J. M. F. J. da.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the view of stakeholders on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the implications of these views on communication strategies for agricultural biotechnology in Brazil. It identifies and describes common groups of attitudes toward GMOs using multivariate statistical analyses. The study then looks for patterns of association between the common attitude groups and the following variables: socioeconomic characteristics trust in institutions as information sources and familiarity with the Brazilian biosafety authority. The article contributes to the understanding of public awareness by highlighting how information sources, trust in institutions, and socioeconomic characteristics, such as age and occupational qualification, play...

A surface kinematics buoy (SKIB) for wave–current interaction studies ArchiMer
Veras Guimaraes, Pedro; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Sutherland, Peter; Accensi, Mickael; Hamon, Michel; Perignon, Yves; Thomson, Jim; Benetazzo, Alvise; Ferrant, Pierre.
Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) and modern motion-sensor packages allow the measurement of ocean surface waves with low-cost drifters. Drifting along or across current gradients provides unique measurements of wave–current interactions. In this study, we investigate the response of several combinations of GNSS receiver, motion-sensor package and hull design in order to define a prototype “surface kinematics buoy” (SKIB) that is particularly optimized for measuring wave–current interactions, including relatively short wave components that are important for air–sea interactions and remote-sensing applications. The comparison with existing Datawell Directional Waverider and Surface Wave Instrument Float with Tracking (SWIFT) buoys, as well as...

A surface “super-convergence” pathway connecting the South Indian Ocean to the subtropical South Pacific gyre ArchiMer
Maes, C.; Grima, N.; Blanke, Bruno; Martinez, E.; Paviet-salomon, T.; Huck, Thierry.
We study the dispersion and convergence of marine floating material by surface currents from a model reanalysis that represents explicitly mesoscale eddy variability. Lagrangian experiments about the long-term evolution (29 years) of an initially homogeneous concentration of particles are performed at global scale with horizontal current at ¼° resolution and refreshed daily over the 1985-2013 period. Results confirm and document the five known sites of surface convergence at the scale of individual oceanic basins, but also reveal a convergent pathway connecting the South Indian subtropical region with the convergence zone of the South Pacific through the Great Australian Bight, the Tasman Sea and the southwest Pacific Ocean. This “super-convergent” pathway...

A system to map the risk of infection by Puccinia kuehnii in Brazil Agronomy
Sumida, Ciro Hideki; Fantin, Lucas Henrique; Gonçalves, Ricardo Marcelo; Canteri, Marcelo Giovanetti; Araujo, Kelly Lana; Giglioti, Éder Antônio.
Orange rust caused by the fungus Puccinia kuehnii greatly affects sugarcane and causes millions of tons of losses in production. This condition was first reported in Brazil at the end of 2009. The disease is currently present in most of the countries that produce this crop. The aim of this research was to develop risk maps of P. kuehnii infection using temperature and relative humidity data, provided by 389 automatic weather stations throughout the country. A spatial distribution analysis was carried out to assess the number of daily hours of favorable conditions for spore germination in each region. In the central-south region, where the main sugarcane producing states are concentrated, two distinct periods were observed during the three years studied....
