In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Recently, the outbreak of brown planthopper in irrigated paddy fields in the lower northern region was found frequently due to continuous rice growing resulting in low yield of rice production. RD49 is a non–glutinous rice which is insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from 3–way cross, PSL00508-3-1-1-4 /IR66738-118-1-2//IR68544-29-2-1-3-1-2. The average yield is 733 kg/rai which is 26, 15 and 6% greater than those of Chai Nat 1, Phitsanulok 2 and RD47, respectively whereas the maximum yield potential reaches 939 kg/rai. The plant type shows moderately strong culm with about 95 cm height, 102-107 days to maturity for seed broadcasting and 116 days for transplanting. The line is moderately resistant to brown planthopper and resistant to rice...

Rice blast disease is the major disease in rainfed lowland area of Thailand. The causal fungus of this disease is Pyricularia grisea Sacc. Variation of this fungus was higher than other rice pathogens. This report used near isogenic lines (NILs) to detect the variation, pathothype and virulence spectrum of the fungus in Thailand during 2002 - 2005. Trap blast nurseries consisted of 9 Thai local cultivars and 18 NILs were conducted at Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center, Khon Kaen Rice Research Center, Phrae Rice Research Center, Phitsanulok Rice Research Center, and Phatthalung Rice Research Center. Single conidia was isolated from infected rice leaves. Virulence spectrum of blast populations were screened on 18 NILs. Two thousand four hundred seventy...

Blast disease is a major rice disease causing significant rice yield loss worldwide. These are several methods to control this disease, but the most effective and most suitable method is to use blast resistant varieties. Prachin Buri Rice Research Center has released a rice variety ‘Bahng Taen’, which is resistant to blast in the Eastern region. Bahng Taen is a non-glutinous, photoperiod insensitive, early maturity variety with high yielding ability. However, the ability to resist to blast of this variety is declining drastically. It is, therefore, necessary to improve blast resistance in Bahng Taen by introgressing blast resistant genes into its background from two donors; PSL’07F6No.2 and PSL’07F6No.5. These two resistant lines were derived from the...

Blast disease is a major rice disease causing significant rice yield loss over the world. It is believed that growing a resistance variety is the most effective strategy for blast disease management. Bahng Taen is one of the released Thai rice varieties primarily found to be resistance to blast disease in the Eastern region. Nowadays, the resistance has decreased drastically. The variety is a non-glutinous, non-photoperiod insensitive, short duration of maturity with high yielding characteristic. In this project, a marker-assisted backcrossing strategy was applied in order to improve blast resistance in Bahng Taen by introgression of resistant genes from donors; PSL’07F6No.2 and PSL’07F6No.5 into this variety. Flanking markers RM212/RM319 and RM224/RM144...

Acharaporn Na Lampang Noenplab.
This study was carried out at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center during 2008-2010 aiming for minimizing rice blast severity by growing 2 rice lines differed in blast resistance to broaden rice genetics. In 2008, resistance screening was performed on 2 sets of blast resistant rice lines derived from KDML105 having different donors of resistance developed by Ubon Ratchathani Rice Research Center. Ten selected blast isolates were inoculated one at a time onto 21 day-old seedlings at 50,000 spores/ml and kept at 25 o C in the controlled room for 7 days before assessment. Since selection criteria were based on resistance to half of the tested isolates and an ideal pair should have similar maturity, therefore, none of the lines have been selected. In 2009, the...
