Benthic respiratory and photosynthetic quotients in a tropical lagoon = Quotients respiratoire et photosynthétique benthiques dans un lagon corallien IRD

Les flux de gaz carbonique et d'oxygène ont été mesurés dans des enceintes de 0,2m2 placées à l'interface eau-sédiment, dans le lagon SW de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Les travaux ont été menés sur plusieurs sites représentatifs d'une large gamme de milieux. Les incubations ont été réalisées à l'obscurité pour estimer la respiration, puis à la lumière ambiante, afin de suivre les effets de la production primaire. Les quotients respiratoire (QRC=production brute d'O2/consommation brute de CO2) des communautés ont été calculés par régressions linéaires fonctionnelles (modèle 2). La valeur de QRC estimée à partir de 61 incubations est de 1,14 (E.S. 0,05) et la valeur de QPC obtenue sur 18 incubations est de 1,03 (E.S. 0,08). La linéarité des relations entre les flux...

Composition et diversité de la méiofaune du lagon de "Great Astrolabe Reef" (Fiji) IRD

During the joint Fijian-French ASTRO cruise in the Great Astrolabe Reef (GAR) lagoon, meiofauna of soft bottom sediments has been investigated at seven stations. Abundance of the higher level taxa, and taxa composition and diversity of nematode has been studied. This paper presents methods and raw data obtained at different level of taxonomic or functional aggregation. As a first ecological contribution of the Fijian meiofauna, it will provide the basic knowledge for biogeographical comparisons in the South Pacific. (Résumé d'auteur)

Estimation of bottom ammonium affinity in the New Caledonian lagoon IRD

Ammonium affinity of New Caledonia lagoon benthic communities was measured during the course of 33 #in situ$ enrichment experiments, in order to estimate the contribution of benthos to ammonium fluxes. Ammonium chloride was injected into enclosures pushed into the sediment ... Ammonium kinetic uptake was then followed for two yours. Grey-sand bottom displayed the highest affinity was the same order of magnitude. Macrophytes, and microphytes (when macrophytes are absent), account for the bulk of ammonium bottom uptake. As a result, grey-sand bottoms with their dense macrophyte cover represent a sink for water column nitrogen and play a key role in nutrient cycling of the lagoon. (D'après résumé d'auteur)

Chemical and Biological evolution of sediments in closed circuit : I. Nitrogen and bacteria. A series of well controlled sea water closed circuit sand filters al­lowed the study of chemical and biological regulation processes in the sediment. Bacteria, Nitrogen chemistry and meiofauna were mainly investigated. The evolution of the different forms of nitrogen is rather similar, whatever the organic matter flow in the sediment. As long as the amount of or­ganic input works as limiting factor, bacteria densities are proportional to its flow. No correlation was found between bacteria and chemical parameters in the sand or in the water. The temperature does not seem to play a determinant part neither in the evolution of bacteria nor in the mineralization of...

Chemical and Biological evolution of sediments in closed circuit : II. Effect of soluble organic matter input on meiofauna in poly­trophic systems. The effect on meiofauna of the input of soluble organic matter in clo­sed circuit sand filters was followed during two years for an oligotrophic, a mesotrophic and an eutrophic tank, and during one year for an atrophic tank. In the case of no input, the density, biomass and species richness of nematodes decreases even if equitability remains constant. Oligotrophy main­tains the stability and diversity. Mesotrophy changes the community composition by species succession. Eutrophy allows biomass increase, due to one dominant species.

The evolution of nitrogen content in experimental closed circuit ¿and filters was followed, each tank being fed with different quantities of soluble organic matter. According to the trophic conditions, two types of metabolism could be observed : - a loss of nitrogen (denitrification), reaching almost 90% of the nitrogen in­put in eutrophic conditions, and close to 35% in mesotrophic conditions. - a gain in nitrogen (fixation), a predominant metabolism in oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Nitrogen retention in the sediment increases slightly with the organic matter input, but no proportionality could be established. It seems that the sediment, by its bacterial metabolisms, regulates its own organic matter rich­ness.

Flux d'oxygène et de sels nutritifs à l'interface eau-sédiment dans le lagon sud-ouest de Nouvelle-Calédonie : enrichissements en ammonium et action d'un inhibiteur de la photosynthèse : méthodes et recueil des données IRD

Le présent document regroupe les méthodes utilisées et les résultats obtenus lors de la mission effectuée par le N.O. ALIS dans le lagon sud-ouest de Nouvelle-Calédonie, du 9 juillet au 10 août 1990. Des enceintes d'incubation ont été mises en oeuvre pour : 1-évaluer le métabolisme aérobie et calculer les flux de sels nutritifs à l'interface eau-sédiment; 2-estimer les flux d'ammonium après enrichissement du milieu; 3-juger de l'action d'un inhibiteur de la photosynthèse, le DCMU (Dichlorophenyl-dimethylurée). La concencration en oxygène de chaque enceinte a été mesurée par une sonde polarographique (YSI 58) reliée à un oxymètre protégé dans un caisson étanche. The use of photosynthesis inhibitor (DCMU) for in situ metabolic and primary production studies on soft bottom benthos IRD

A selective chemical photosynthesis inhibitor, DCMU (Dichorophenyl-dimethylurea), dissolved in DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide) was substituted for the dark incubation method commonly used to measure the oxygen consumption in metabolic and primary production studies. We compared oxygen fluxes during light incubations with DCMU and dark incubations procedure, on soft bottom benthos. For this purpose, we studied the effects of different DCMU concentrations. A concentration of 5.10-5 mol 1-1 inside a clear incubation enclosure completely inhibits photosynthesis without affecting the metabolism of soft bottom benthos. (Résumé d'auteur)
