Our study aimed at providing a comprehensive list of Aphididae alien to Europe. A total of 98 species originating from other continents have established so far in Europe, to which we add 4 cosmopolitan species of uncertain origin (cryptogenic). Th e 102 alien species of Aphididae established in Europe belong to 12 diff erent subfamilies, fi ve of them contributing by more than 5 species to the alien fauna. Most alien aphids originate from temperate regions of the world. Th ere was no signifi cant variation in the geographic origin of the alien aphids over time. Th e average introduction rate was 0.5 species per year since 1800. Th e mean number of newly recorded species per year decreased since 2000 but this pattern may change in the following years.

Assessment of aphid diversity (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in Algeria: a fourteen-year investigation Inra

La faune aphidienne d’Algérie est peu connue. Seulement 57 espèces de pucerons y ont été recensées à ce jour. Après une analyse bibliographique et 14 ans de piégeage des pucerons ailés à l’aide de bacs jaunes installés dans des cultures et de collectes d’aptères sur diverses espèces de plantes sauvages ou cultivées, 120 espèces de pucerons ont été recensées dont 63 sont mentionnées pour la première fois de ce pays et 27 pour la première fois du Maghreb. Cette faune se caractérise par un nombre important d’espèces cosmopolites (42.1%) et par l’absence d’espèces endémiques. Les pucerons entretiennent des relations intimes avec leurs plantes hôtes qui constituent leur seule nourriture et leur seul habitat, et qui ainsi imposent des contraintes sélectives considérables sur leur évolution. On pense donc que les plantes hôtes ont grandement influencé la diversification des pucerons. Ici nous synthétisons les connaissances concernant le rôle des associations avec les plantes hôtes sur la spéciation des pucerons, en examinant des études menées au niveau macro-évolutif et au sein des populations. Evolutionary lability of a complex life cycle in the aphid genus Brachycaudus Inra

Background: Most aphid species complete their life cycle on the same set of host-plant species, but some (heteroecious species) alternate between different hosts, migrating from primary (woody) to secondary (herbaceous) host plants. The evolutionary processes behind the evolution of this complex life cycle have often been debated. One widely accepted scenario is that heteroecy evolved from monoecy on woody host plants. Several shifts towards monoecy on herbaceous plants have subsequently occurred and resulted in the radiation of aphids. Host alternation would have persisted in some cases due to developmental constraints preventing aphids from shifting their entire life cycle to herbaceous hosts (which are thought to be more favourable). Fine-scale cospeciation between Brachycaudus and Buchnera aphidicola: bacterial genome helps define species and evolutionary relationships in aphids Inra

Aphids harbour an obligatory symbiont, Buchnera aphidicola, providing essential amino acids not supplied by their diet. These bacteria are transmitted vertically and phylogenic analyses suggest that they have 'cospeciated' with their hosts. We investigated this cospeciation phenomenon at a fine taxonomic level, within the aphid genus Brachycaudus. We used DNA-based methods of species delimitation in both organisms, to avoid biases in the definition of aphid and Buchnera species and to infer association patterns without the presumption of a specific interaction. Le puceron de la vigne Aphis illinoisensis arrive en Algérie Inra

Le puceron de la vigne ou encore le puceron américain Aphis illinoisensis vient d’être signalé sur vigne dans plusieurs régions de l’Algérie. Après la Turquie en 2002 et la Grèce en 2005, ce puceron vient de gagner la rive sud de la Méditerranée et le continent Africain. Il est probable qu’il a déjà atteint les autres pays du Maghreb et de l’Afrique du nord.

Molecular phylogeny and systematic in the genus Brachycaudus (Homoptera: Aphididae): insights from a combined analysis of nuclear and mitochondrial genes Inra

Phylogenetic relationships among members of the Aphid genus Brachycaudus (Homoptera: Aphididae) were inferred from partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome B oxidase (CytB), two partial fragments of mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) and the internal transcribed spacer II (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA. Twenty-nine species, with several specimens per species, were included, representing all the historically recognized species-groups and subgenera used in the genus except the monospecific subgenus Mordvilkomemor. Results indicate that the genus Brachycaudus is a well-supported monophyletic group. A taxonomic investigation is developed on aphids of the genus Brachycaudus v.d.G. subgenus Appelia Börner, commonly known as B. prunicola complex. To date the group composition is not entirely clear because of the morphological similarity of its different members. Biometric multivariate analysis and genetic analysis which included both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequencing as well as allozyme analysis were used. New polymorphic microsatellites loci, cross-species amplification and PCR multiplexing in the black Aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli Inra

Aphis fabae includes four morphological cryptic subspecies, which are mostly identified by their partially distinct secondary host range. To determine the extent of gene flow and isolation between these four taxa, we isolated and characterized 12 microsatellite loci from Aphis fabae fabae and tested cross-species amplification of eight loci from the closely related species Aphis gossypii . Using eight previously described microsatellite loci, we have developed the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) multiplexing of 24 loci, which were separated in tree sets and five PCRs. These sets of microsatellite loci provide high throughput capacity for large-scale population genetic studies at a minimum cost

This article documents the addition of 220 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Resistance source to cowpea aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) in broad bean (Vicia faba L.) Algerian landrace Collection Inra

The present study evaluated the resistance of 7 varieties of the broad bean Vicia faba L. to cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch, 1854. These landraces from the region of Biskra (in the south of Algeria) were selected in an initial field trial and subjected to further testing in the greenhouse. Landrace V51 proved to be the most interesting, in that it resisted aphid attack by mechanisms involving tolerance and antibiosis. Aphid infestation of this landrace resulted in a dry weight loss of only 3.09% (comparison with uninfested plants). The antibiotic resistance of this landrace also significantly decreased the biological potential of the cowpea aphid.
