Characterization of the activated sludge and of the operating conditions of six SBR treating dairy effluent and operated at industrial scale Inra

The sludge from six SBRs treating dairy effluent and located at same geographical location, in North East of France, were collected to study their characteristic behavior. The six plants were designed and constructed by the same manufacturer and are working under quite similar operating conditions. The objective of the study was to observe if any similarity existed in the characteristics of the sludge collected from the SBRs. The sludge was characterized for morphological properties (filament index, floc size), settling, compressibility, suspended solids (SS) concentration. Anaerobic digestion is an interesting solution to wastewater sludge management issue as a part of organic matter is converted into methane which is valorisable as renewable energy. The aim of this study was to investigate and to compare the impact of sludge thermal pre-treatments on semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of two waste activated sludge samples collected from different urban wastewater plants. The ever-increasing amount of solid waste generated by wastewater treatment plants highlights emerging economic and environmental issues. In order to develop new processes producing less sludge, the use of ozone combined with anaerobic digestion was investigated for waste activated sludge treatment. This paper was aimed at evaluating the impact of ozone pretreatment on anaerobic digestion and particularly the enhancement of biogas production. Sludge solubilization was estimated in terms of modification of chemical oxygen demand, solids and nitrogen. Batch anaerobic digestion highlighted the enhancement of ozonated sludge biodegradability. The exact extent of microbial diversity remains unknowable. Nevertheless, fingerprinting patterns [denaturing gradient electrophoresis (DGE), single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP)] provide an image of a microbial ecosystem and contain diversity data. We generated numerical simulation fingerprinting patterns based on three types of distribution (uniform, geometric and lognormal) with a range of units from 10 to 500 000. First, simulated patterns containing a diversity of around 1000 units or more gave patterns similar to those obtained in experiments. Differences in the aerosolization behavior of microorganisms as revealed through their transport by biogas Inra

The aerosol microbial diversity of biogas was analyzed in order to examine the aerosolization behavior of microorganisms. Six biogas samples were analyzed: five from mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestors treating different wastes, and one from landfill. Epifluorescent microscopic counts reveal that with 106 Prokarya m- 3, only one per one thousand billion were aerosolized from the digestor sludges to the biogas. SSU (Small Sub Unit) ribosomal fingerprinting (Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism) shows that microbial communities in the biogas were not just a rough copy of anaerobic digestor microbial communities and underlines that all microorganisms are not equally convoyed by biogas. Effect of ultrasonic, thermal and ozone pre-treatments on waste activated sludge solubilisation and anaerobic biodegradability Inra

In order to enhance the efficiency of anaerobic digestion, the effects of ultrasounds, ozonation and thermal pre-treatment have been studied on waste activated sludge. The feature of this study was to carry out the comparison of the three pre-treatments in the same conditions and on the same sludge sample. Each treatment was tested in two conditions close to optimum conditions to maximise batch anaerobic sludge biodegradability. All treatments led to chemical oxygen demand and matter solubilisation and had little influence on mineral matter. In terms of solubilisation thermal pre-treatment was better than sonication or ozonation. The anaerobic treatment of saline effluents using halophilic and halotolerant microbial consortia is of major interest. Inhibition of anaerobic digestion is known to occur at high salt content. However, it seems that the suitable adaptation of an anaerobic sludge makes possible the treatment of saline wastewater. Monitoring the impact of bioaugmentation on the start-up of biological phophorus removal in a laboratory scale activated sludge ecosystem Inra

Nitrification of a high-strength wastewater in an inverse turbulent bed reactor : effect of temperature on nitrite accumulation Inra

An inverse turbulent bed reactor was investigated for nitrification of a high-strength synthetic wastewater (250–2000 mgN–NH4+ l-1). In this reactor, a granular floating solid is expanded by an up-flow current of air. The start-up period was studied during 120 days, including biofilm formation, at a temperature of 30 °C. At the end of this start-up period, the reactor completed stable nitrification to nitrate at a nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 3.6 gN lreactor-1 d-1. Then, the reactor was run at 30 °C during 114 days without any nitrite accumulation. Survival of Listeria monocytogenes and Enterococcus faecium in sludge evaluated by real-time PCR and culture methods Inra

Aims: This study evaluates the behaviour in spiked sludge of a pathogenic bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, by cultural and molecular techniques, and compares its survival with the one of a faecal indicator, Enterococcus faecium.Methods and Results: Listeria monocytogenes strain Scott A and E. faeciumT were followed for 17 days after inoculation in sludge.
