The management of clay-rich soils in agriculture is mainly dependent on their hydromechanical properties that govern their structural evolutions. These structural evolutions are commonly described along the shrinkage curves obtained in a laboratory. Nevertheless, the field survey needs tools of in situ investigations able to characterize the structural profile evolutions of soils through the seasons. Shrinkage and subsidence in a marsh soil : measurements and preliminary model Inra

Modeling the shrinkage and subsidence of soils is generally based on the laboratory shrinkage curves established from liquid state to shrinkage limit, rarely exhibited in situ. We studied the vertical behavior of clay-dominant soils from the Marais de l'Ouest (France) in the 20 to 100% water content range. The consolidation states were quantified by recording profiles of wet density (γb) and gravimetric water content (W) down to the depth of 2.50 and 2.00 m in a sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) field and a grassland, respectively. Under the evident surface consolidation, a paleosol was observed at 1.3-m depth in the sunflower field. Although the shrink-swell phenomenon of clays has been thoroughly studied, the in situ relation of the shrinkage curve to the structure profile is rarely presented from the shrinkage limit to the liquid limit. We studied the consolidated structure of clay-dominated (<2 μm) soils formed on ‘pseudo-liquid’ marsh sediments in the ‘Marais de l’Ouest’ (France). The profiles were studied in a grassland field and in a sunflower field from unsaturated surface soils down to deeper, saturated, levels characterized by a very large water content (100% by weight). Vertical porosity profile of a clay-rich marsh soil Inra

The evolution of clay soil porosity is currently demonstrated via the shrinkage curves in a large water content domain spreading from a shrinkage limit to a liquidity limit. In fact, the parallel between in situ profiles and the shrinkage curves in such a large water content range is difficult to obtain because of the lack of earth pressure in the laboratory tests and in situ limited water contents. The vertical distribution of porosity throughout a clay-rich marsh soil profile was studied in a grassland field with samples taken from the soil surface characterized by water contents near their shrinkage limit down to 2.00 m deep saturated sediments over their liquidity limit.
