Atlas de la pêche palangrière réunionnaise de l'océan Indien ArchiMer

Within the IOSSS-ESPADON project (http://wwz.ifremer.fr/lareunion_eng/Projects/IOSSS-ESPADON), an atlas of the drifting longline fishery in the Indian Ocean has been achieved. It summarizes since 1950 the history of the longline fishery in the Indian Ocean in terms of fishing efforts and catches of swordfish. This Atlas also synthesized the evolution since 1994 of the La Réunion longline fishery activity (fishing efforts, catches and yields for the main targeted species).

This study summarizes the results of the processing and analysis of data from illegal fisheries, apprehended by the eco-guards of the Marine Natural Reserve of Reunion from 2015 to 2017 (including the first dataset from 2018). These information are valued in terms of fisheries and bioecological knowledge for reef fish species. Thus, both diversity and abundance indices, size structures, growth parameters, stock characterization, can be apprehended from the biological parameters collected on all the species caught because they often do not exist : the sizes, weights, sexes, maturities, scales, otoliths, stomach contents as well as genetic and isotopic samples. The main objective of the CAMP project (2009-2011) was to estimate the effective connectivity between Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) through population genetics of 3 biological models Epinephelus merra, Lutjanus kasmira and Myripristis berndti. The ultimate goal is to provide scientific results for managers to contribute significantly to the design of the MPA network in SWIO. Campagne de prospection de poissons démersaux profonds réalisée autour de La Réunion en 2011 ArchiMer

Since 2000, the exploitation of the deep demersal fish (200-700 m) with the use of electric winches has been increasing in Reunion island ; and this has needed a new appraisal of yields (CPUE) and individual fish sizes, as indicators of the state of the fish stocks. A first survey has been carried out at the first half of 2011, in order to set up the comparison with a previous survey in 2000 on the West coast of Reunion island. Drops of yields and sizes could be pointed out, attesting the overexploitation of the commercial species (Fleury et al 2011). Un suivi par plongées de deux semis de coquilles Saint-Jacques a été engagé en 2005 par l'Ifremer à la demande du Comité Régional des Pêches et des Elevages Marins de Poitou-Charentes (CRPMEM). Cette opération a été programmée dans le cadre du Comité de suivi du programme de repeuplement des Pertuis Charentais en coquille Saint-Jacques. L'objectif était de vérifier si le protocole habituel de suivi par plongée des semis de coquille Saint-Jacques pouvait être mis en place dans les pertuis où la visibilité est souvent faible afin de disposer d'une méthode d'évaluation quantitative de l'impact de l'opération engagée par le CRPMEM.

Identification of skipjack tuna juveniles based on DNA control region sequences and potential spawning area around reunion island ArchiMer

In this study, we confirmed that DNA control region can be used to identify potential spawning area from pelagic juveniles species. We used the mitochondrial DNA control region to identify tuna juveniles predated by common dolphinfish and sampled in surface waters around Reunion Island. These were skipjack juveniles at an early stage (small length and young age). The biological results confirmed the species identification based on DNA analysis. Catch data by longline reveal a higher number of skipjack from October to December around Reunion Island corresponding to the period of our skipjack juvenile sampling

Multi-Genetic Marker Approach and Spatio-Temporal Analysis Suggest There Is a Single Panmictic Population of Swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Indian Ocean ArchiMer

Genetic population structure of swordfish Xiphias gladius was examined based on 2231 individual samples, collected mainly between 2009 and 2010, among three major sampling areas within the Indian Ocean (IO; twelve distinct sites), Atlantic (two sites) and Pacific (one site) Oceans using analysis of nineteen microsatellite loci (n = 2146) and mitochondrial ND2 sequences (n = 2001) data. Sample collection was stratified in time and space in order to investigate the stability of the genetic structure observed with a special focus on the South West Indian Ocean. Observation des Marées aux débarquements - OBSDEB ArchiMer

Swordfish Xiphias gladius is an oceanic-pelagic species. Its population structure in the Western Indian Ocean was studied from the shape of the sagittal otoliths of 391 individuals collected from 2009 to 2014. Normalised elliptical Fourier descriptors (EFDs) were extracted automatically using TNPC software. Principal components analysis (PCA) conducted on EFDs showed no significant effect of side (i.e. left or right otolith). Consequently, all 391 sagittal otoliths were used to identify stocks among six geographical areas: Reunion Island, Mozambique Channel, Rodrigues, South Africa, Madagascar South and Sri Lanka. Projet GERMON. Structure génétique et migration du thon Germon ArchiMer

The GERMON project had several aims i) to understand the populations’ structure between albacore tuna southwest of the Indian Ocean and southeast Atlantic, ii) to determine the origin of juveniles observed in South Africa iii) to improve the understanding of the biology field (Size/Size and Size/Weight; reproduction and feeding area; trophic linkages) and iv) to initiate work on chemical analyzes and adaptation of the albacore species to its environment. These aims have been held and the results allow a better understanding of the management albacore. A general summary of results is presented in Part 9.
