CFD based determination of temperature and humidity at leaf surface Inra

A numerical model based on the energy balance has been developed for computing with the Fluent CFD code temperature and humidity at leaf surface for low light levels. Crop transpiration and aerial flows were coupled and a single parameter model for the stomatal response of leaves to radiation flux has been considered. Validation of the results at leaf level has required an experimental setup based on Mu¨ nger cells to quantify temperature, relative humidity and the different heat fluxes for single bean leaves. experiments have been performed for three alternate low light/dark periods. Compatibility between biopesticides used to control grey mould, powdery mildew and whitefly on tomato Inra

Botrytis cinerea, Oidium neolycopersici and Bemisia tabaci are among the most important pests encountered on tomato in greenhouses. In order to limit their development, biological methods of control have been elaborated. To protect pruning wounds against B. cinerea at crop level, the fungus Microdochium dimerum has shown a high efficacy. The formulated plant extract from the giant knotweed Reynoutria sachalinensis (Milsana) has shown a high efficacy to control powdery mildew of tomato. The myco-insecticide based on Lecanicillium muscarium (Mycotal) appears to be a promising biological control agent against whiteflies. The use of these products in a context of integrated protection of tomato requires that their efficacy is not altered when applied together....

Effects of fluctuating moisture and temperature regimes on the persistence of quiescent conidia of Isaria fumosorosea Inra

Conidia of Isaria fumosorosea were submitted to three regimes of temperature and moisture to simulate microclimatic conditions which prevail in temperate (43% RH and 28 degrees C to 98% RH and 15 degrees C), subtropical (75% RH and 35 degrees C to 98% RH and 25 degrees C), and arid areas (13% RH and 40 degrees C to 33% RH and 15 degrees C) with daily fluctuating cycles. Germination, conidial viability, and virulence to Spodoptera frugiperda larvae were less affected after 20 days exposure under temperate cycling conditions than under arid and subtropical conditions. Effects of wetting on the persistence of quiescent conidia of Isaria fumosorosea Inra

Quiescent conidia of Isaria fumosorosea were submitted to various wetting-drying cycles under different regimes of temperature and air humidity. Germination and viability of conidia collected on cultures freshly host-passed (P2) were not affected at 25 degrees C during five cycles at increasing wet phase duration (2-12 h per daily cycle) under any moisture conditions (13-86% RH). Infectivity levels remained stable, but mortality was slightly postponed. In vitro-cultured inocula (P5) were significantly affected after only one cycle at higher air humidity (75 and 86% RH) and temperature (35 and 40 degrees C). A study of predation choices of Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) late instars and adults, when offered various developmental stages (eggs and nymphs) of the recently established whiteßy Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), was made based on two preference indices. Influence of nutrient, pH and dissolved oxygen on the production of Metarhizium flavoviride Mf189 blastospores in submerged batch culture Inra

The influence of different parameters on the sporulation of Metarhizium flavoviride was studied during submerged cultures in shake flasks and in 5 l bioreactors. The screening in shake flasks of several carbon and nitrogen sources allowed the definition of an optimal medium, based on sucrose and brewer’s yeast with a C/N ratio of 1.6. With this medium, a production of 5.4 _ 108 blastospores per ml (Bspores ml_1) was obtained after 169 h of cultivation. The influence of pH and pO2 was independently studied in 5 l working volume bioreactors using the optimal medium. Isolation and characterization of microsatellite loci from the entomopathogenic hyphomycete, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus Inra

Nine microsatellite markers were isolated from the entomopathogenic haploid fungus Paecilomyces fumosoroseus. Genetic diversity was assessed in 26P. fumosoroseus isolates originated from the whitefly Bemisia tabaci collected in various geoclimatic areas. Eight loci were polymorphic with an observed number of alleles ranging from two to six. The loci differentiated some isolates and group of isolates according to their geographical location, showing promise for the study of gene flow. All loci failed to give clear amplifications in P. fumosoroseus isolates from hosts other than B. tabaci. Microsatellite variability in the entomopathogenic fungus, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus: genetic diversity and population structure Inra

The hyphomycete Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Pfr) is a geographically widespread fungus capable of infecting various insect hosts. The fungus has been used for the biological control of several important insect pests of agriculture. However knowledge of the fungus' genetic diversity and population structure is required for its sustainable use as a biological control agent. We investigated length and sequence polymorphisms of nine microsatellite loci for 33 Pfr accessions sampled from various host species and geographical locations, and our results reveal complex mutational processes for these molecular markers. Only Pfr isolates from Bemisia tabaci were amplified successfully, indicating the existence of Pfr genotypes specifically associated with B. tabaci....

Un système destiné à étudier les «effets photiques» du rayonnement en conditions artificielles sur la persistancedes micro-organismes a été mis au point. Ce système est composé de plusieurs enceintes équipées desources radiatives (lampes à halogénures métalliques). Des filtres optiques permettent de travailler dans des gammesde longueur d’onde déterminées. Modelling temperature-dependent bionomics of Bemisia tabaci (Q-biotype) Inra

The influence of temperature (17, 21, 25, 30 and 35 °C) on life-history traits of a Q-biotype Bemisia tabaci population on tomato is studied. Temperature-dependent relationships are characterized for immature developmental rate, immature survival, fecundity, longevity and intrinsic rate of increase. Development time vary from 20 days at 30 °C to 56 days at 17 °C and the lowest thermal threshold is estimated at 10.2 °C. The optimal temperature for immature development is 32.5 °C. Total fecundity (eggs per female) ranges from 105.3 (at 21 °C) to 41 (at 35 °C). The longevity decreases with temperature increase. Persistance des conidiospores des hyphomycètes entomopathogènes Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sor., Nomuraea rileyi (F.) Samson et Paecilomyces fumoso-roseus Wize dans le sol, en conditions contrôlées Inra

L’étude comparative de la persistance des conidiospores de 4 hyphomycètes pathogènes d’insectes a été menée en conditions contrôlées dans un sol expérimental à 19 °C. Les inoculums des souches Metarhizium anisopliae N° 32, Nomuraea rileyi N° 5, Paecilomyces fumoso-roseus N° 39 et surtout Beauveria bassiana N° 18 se dégradent en moins d’un an (pertes pondérales de matière sèche de 70-80 p. 100 en 4 à 6 mois, potentiel d’inoculum négligeable). En revanche, la stabilité des conidies de l’isolat M. anisopliae N° 51 est remarquable (perte de biomasse de 5,4 p. 100 en 21 mois).
