Angular leaf spot (ALS), caused by Pseudocer-cospora griseola, is one of the most devastating diseases of common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) in tropical and subtropical production areas. Breeding for ALS resistance is difficult due to the extensive virulence diversity of P. griseolaand the recurrent appearance of new virulent races. Five major loci, Phg-1 to Phg-5, confer-ring ALS resistance have been named, and markers tightly linked to these loci have been reported. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have also been described, but the validation of some QTLs is still pending. The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important legumes for direct human consumption (Lin et al. 2008). Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum is the most widespread, recurrent and devastating disease of the common bean in Latin America and Africa (Pastor-Corrales and Tu 1989). The genetic mapping is carried out using segregating populations. Obtaining segregating populations for genetic mapping have been standard practice in the common bean research (Gepts et al. 1993; Blair et al. 2006). To better understand the genetic diversity of the cultivated upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and its structure at the molecular level, microsatellite markers were used. The objective of this study was to evaluate genetic diversity and population structure in tetraploid cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. race latifolium H.). Twenty cultivars and inbred lines from Embrapa Cotton Breeding Program, Brazil, were analyzed. From a total of 33 microsatellite (SSR) markers, twenty seven markers revealed 91 polymorphic SSR alleles. Based on the evidences presented in this paper, results from classical genetic studies, fine-mapping information and physical position analysis using the reference genome sequence of P. vulgaris, the BIC Genetic Committee has formally accepted the proposed new gene symbols.
